to British <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> those countries, Layard's <strong>in</strong>timate<br />

knowledge of <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>in</strong> dispute proved of great value<br />

to Sir Stratford Cann<strong>in</strong>g (afterwards Lord Stratford de Redcliffe),<br />

<strong>the</strong>n British ambassador at <strong>the</strong> Porte <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople,<br />

whi<strong>the</strong>r our traveller had hastened. Though for<br />

apparent political reasons <strong>the</strong> Russian po<strong>in</strong>t of view was<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally accepted by England, much aga<strong>in</strong>st Cann<strong>in</strong>g's protest<br />

and his own very decided conviction, Layard had found<br />

<strong>in</strong><br />

this man of <strong>in</strong>fluence a liberal patron, who dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

years entrusted him with many important missions,<br />

endeavor<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> time to have him def<strong>in</strong>itely attached to<br />

his staff". While thus wait<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> shore of <strong>the</strong> Bosphorus<br />

for a much coveted position, Layard rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> regular<br />

correspondence with Botta, whose reports<br />

and draw<strong>in</strong>gs he<br />

received before <strong>the</strong>y were published. The latter's unexpected<br />

brilliant success at Khorsabad brought him new<br />

encouragement for his own plans, and <strong>in</strong>creased his hope<br />

and desire to return on some future day to Mesopotamia<br />

and excavate <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of N<strong>in</strong>eveh. With his m<strong>in</strong>d firmly<br />

fixed upon this one object of his life, he commenced " <strong>the</strong><br />

studv of <strong>the</strong> Semitic languages, to which I conjectured <strong>the</strong><br />

cuneiform <strong>in</strong>scriptions from <strong>the</strong> Assvrian ru<strong>in</strong>s belonged." !<br />

But when he saw Sir Stratford mak<strong>in</strong>g arrangements for a<br />

temporarv return to England, he became tired of wait<strong>in</strong>g<br />

longer for his promised<br />

attacheship, and one dav spoke to<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter of his ardent desire to exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> mounds near<br />

Mosul. To his great delight, his generous patron not only<br />

approved of his suggestion, but offered j[6o (=$300) towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> expenses which would be <strong>in</strong>curred <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g tentative<br />
