Sargon, <strong>the</strong> conqueror of Samaria (722 b. a), Dur-Sharruken<br />

or " Sargon's Castle." The walls by which <strong>the</strong> town was<br />

protected were found <strong>in</strong>tact at <strong>the</strong>ir bases. Thev constituted<br />

a rectangular parallelogram, or nearly a square, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

its<br />

rour corners to <strong>the</strong> card<strong>in</strong>al po<strong>in</strong>ts, and enclos<strong>in</strong>g a space<br />

of a little over 741 acres.<br />

Its northwest side was <strong>in</strong>terrupted<br />

bv <strong>the</strong> royal palace, which, like a huge bastion, protruded<br />

considerably <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>, at <strong>the</strong> same time form<strong>in</strong>g part<br />

ot <strong>the</strong> great town-wall. The latter was provided with eight<br />

monumental gates, each of which was named after an Assyrian<br />

deitv.<br />

The royal residence was erected on a lofty<br />

terrace, nearly<br />

forty-five feet high and built of unbaked bricks cased with<br />

a wall of large square stones. At <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn corner of<br />

this raised platform, cover<strong>in</strong>g an area of nearly twenty-five<br />

acres oi" land, was an open place ; near <strong>the</strong> western corner<br />

stood a temple, and at <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> southwest side rose<br />

<strong>the</strong> stage-tower belong<strong>in</strong>g to it<br />

and used also for astronomical<br />

observations ; <strong>the</strong> rest was occupied bv <strong>the</strong> palace itself.<br />

This latter was divided <strong>in</strong>to three sections, <strong>the</strong> seraglio<br />

occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> terrace and extend<strong>in</strong>g towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> ; <strong>the</strong> harem, with only two entrances, situated<br />

at <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn corner, and <strong>the</strong> domestic quarters at <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern corner, connected with <strong>the</strong> store and provision<br />

rooms, <strong>the</strong> stables, kitchen, and bakerv, at <strong>the</strong> centre of<br />

<strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast side. The seraglio, <strong>in</strong>habited by <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and his large ret<strong>in</strong>ue of military and civil officers, like <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r two sections of <strong>the</strong> extensive build<strong>in</strong>g, consisted<br />

of a<br />

great many larger and smaller rooms grouped around several<br />

open courts. The northwest w<strong>in</strong>g conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> public<br />

reception rooms, — wide halls, elaborately decorated with<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ged bulls, magnificent sculptures and historical <strong>in</strong>scriptions,<br />

glorify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his actions of peace and war.<br />

We see him hunt<strong>in</strong>g wild animals, do<strong>in</strong>g homage to <strong>the</strong><br />

gods, sitt<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> table and listen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gers and
