restore <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al contour of <strong>the</strong> mound as soon as <strong>the</strong><br />

latter had been fully exam<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

Even before this agreement<br />

was entered <strong>in</strong>to with <strong>the</strong> villagers, Botta had found it necessary<br />

to fill his trenches aga<strong>in</strong> after he had copied <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions,<br />

drawn <strong>the</strong> sculptures, and removed those antiquities<br />

which could be transported, as <strong>the</strong> only way <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

large mass of crumbl<strong>in</strong>g reliefs could be saved for future<br />

research from <strong>the</strong>ir rapid destruction by <strong>the</strong> air. But it<br />

was not until <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of May, 1844, after <strong>the</strong> excavations<br />

had rested almost completely 1 dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter, that<br />

Fland<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally brought <strong>the</strong> necessary firman from Constant<strong>in</strong>ople<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> resumption of <strong>the</strong> excavations. Notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g heat, no more time was lost.<br />

Three hundred Christian refugees were gradually engaged<br />

to excavate <strong>the</strong> unexplored part of <strong>the</strong> mound, Botta copy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions and Fland<strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> sculptures as soon as <strong>the</strong>y had been exposed. Both<br />

men worked with <strong>the</strong> greatest harmony, energy, and devotion<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole oppressive summer, until, <strong>in</strong><br />

October, 1844, after most remarkable success, <strong>the</strong> excavations<br />

were suspended temporarily.<br />

A large mass of material was packed for shipment by raft<br />

down <strong>the</strong> Tigris to Basra, whence <strong>the</strong> Cormorant, a French<br />

man-of-war, <strong>in</strong> 1846, carried it safely to Havre. Fland<strong>in</strong><br />

was <strong>the</strong> first to leave Khorsabad (November, 1844) and<br />

to return to Paris. His large portfolio of beautiful sketches<br />

Only <strong>in</strong>terrupted by a short visit to Khorsabad <strong>in</strong> company with a fewtravellers,<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m Mr. Dittel, sent by <strong>the</strong> Russian M<strong>in</strong>ister of Public<br />

Instruction to <strong>in</strong>spect <strong>the</strong> excavations. In connection with this visit Botta<br />

even made a slight excavation <strong>in</strong> order to satisfy <strong>the</strong> curiosity of his guests.
