Trustees of <strong>the</strong> British Museum, despatched Commander<br />

Jones <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of 1852 to proceed with <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

of <strong>the</strong> necessary map. Assisted by Dr. Hyslop 1 of<br />

<strong>the</strong> British Residency <strong>in</strong> Baghdad, chiefly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

flora of <strong>the</strong> N<strong>in</strong>eveh region, <strong>the</strong> work was accomplished<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a month and a half, at that great time when Victor<br />

Place was still excavat<strong>in</strong>g at Khorsabad, and Rawl<strong>in</strong>son <strong>in</strong>spect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> Assyrian explorers, while Fresnel<br />

and Oppert had just arrived <strong>in</strong> that neighborhood from<br />

Paris, previous to <strong>the</strong>ir excavations <strong>in</strong><br />

Babylon.<br />

In three large sheets, which up to this day are <strong>the</strong> standard<br />

work for <strong>the</strong> geography of ancient Assyria, <strong>the</strong> results<br />

of <strong>the</strong> survey were published. Before clos<strong>in</strong>g his <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

report on <strong>the</strong> topography of N<strong>in</strong>eveh, Jones paid a<br />

warm tribute to <strong>the</strong> work of Rich, " <strong>the</strong> first real laborer <strong>in</strong><br />

Assyrian fields," by writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g memorable<br />

words: "His survey (of N<strong>in</strong>eveh and Nimrud) will be<br />

found as correct as <strong>the</strong> most diligent enthusiast can desire<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed, were it not for <strong>the</strong> renewed <strong>in</strong>quiry <strong>in</strong>to Assyrian<br />

subjects, <strong>the</strong> present survev we have <strong>the</strong><br />

honor of submitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> public might have been dispensed with, for its<br />

value chiefly consists <strong>in</strong> corroborat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fidelity of his positions,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rwise, though quite unnecessary, stamp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his<br />

narrative with <strong>the</strong> broad seal of truth."<br />

<strong>the</strong> mean while <strong>the</strong> way was be<strong>in</strong>g gradually prepared<br />

for a similar k<strong>in</strong>d of work <strong>in</strong> Babylonia. Fraser, 2 Loftus, 3<br />

and Layard 4 had boldly entered <strong>the</strong> swamps of 'Iraq and<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong> former two travers<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this great alluvial pla<strong>in</strong> almost its entire length, and<br />
