life was nurtured. Your children were your greatest asset.<br />

This was reflected in their behaviour. When they arrived<br />

at school, I knew you loved them. I knew you were raising<br />

them with their best interests in mind.<br />

During my stay in Kane, I lived with the Bill Brauns in<br />

the teacherage. This was a good arrangement. They had<br />

the downstairs and I had the upstairs. This way I was on<br />

my own, but I wasn’t alone in the house.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the trustees, Peter Harder, wrote out the<br />

cheques. I remember walking to his garage to receive them.<br />

I was so pleased to be able to put the entire cheque into<br />

savings. This was possible because I gave private piano<br />

lessons after classes. Little did I know I soon would be<br />

engaged to be married. My entire savings were used to<br />

furnish our (Udo’s and mine) home. It felt so good to be<br />

able to do this.<br />

Many a time you invited me to your homes for fellowship<br />

and delicious meals. This was a great way to get to<br />

know you in an informal setting.<br />

Much to my surprise, one <strong>of</strong> these invitations landed<br />

up being a bridal shower for me. I treasure all my gifts, but<br />

one in particular. Each <strong>of</strong> my thirty-two students had embroidered<br />

their names in black onto white squares which<br />

their moms stitched into a beautiful pink and white quilt.<br />

Getting married meant leaving Kane. I had grown fond<br />

<strong>of</strong> you. Teaching was something I enjoyed.<br />

Fortunately Kane isn’t that far from my <strong>Morris</strong> address.<br />

Off and on I meet some <strong>of</strong> you. This always is a pleasure.<br />

Life has given me many rewards. Kane definitely was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> them. It was a privilege to have been a part <strong>of</strong> your<br />

community.<br />

A teaching position, teaching grades one to four,<br />

brought me to the town <strong>of</strong> Kane. Previously my home had<br />

been in the <strong>Morris</strong>-St. Elizabeth area.<br />

The memories I have <strong>of</strong> living and teaching in Kane,<br />

during the 1962-1964 term, remain with me as pleasant<br />

ones. The polite, shy, yet friendly faces that greeted me<br />

the first few days <strong>of</strong> the school year soon changed as we<br />

got to know one another. The shyness was exchanged for<br />

confidence. Learning was underway.<br />

I saw and felt the community was a place where family<br />
