THE VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY
RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
Faye Spiers
Editor
The Autogas Challenge in September, organised by UKLPG autogas
management team member Steve Fricker of Gas Power UK, was a
resounding success. Fourteen cars drove as economically as
possible from Land’s End to John O’Groats and winner Stephanie
Brown (yes, a woman!) managed a very respectable -5.7 per cent lpg
consumption compared to petrol in her BRC converted Range Rover.
The challenge succeeded in raising awareness with motorists, with
articles appearing in local press along the route and motoring
magazines. Chris Hope of Kelsey Publishing, which publishes over a
dozen motoring magazines, accompanied the drivers on the challenge
and will be syndicating his article across the company’s titles.
The challenge also showed what the industry can achieve when it
pulls together. Installers involved their staff and customers as drivers,
and companies, including BP Gas, Countrywide, F1 Automotive,
Gleaner Oils and Lima Autogas contributed the fuel to make the
challenge happen.
Steve was surprised by the camaraderie and competitive spirit
between the teams this year. Since completing the challenge, most
of the drivers, even self-professed lead foot Steve, have changed
their driving styles to become more fuel-efficient as it was a
necessity during the challenge. Winner Stephanie Brown is
American and used to driving on long, straight roads between
states, which she is sure was a contributing factor to her success.
Surprisingly, the challenge turned into a spectator sport, with over
600 people watching the drivers’ progress up the country on
Btrack’s website. Steve’s wife got several calls telling her Steve was
going the wrong way when he deviated from the direct route looking
for a shortcut!
Steve has already had interest from both drivers and suppliers for
next year’s challenge. He’s hoping to do a tour of the UK’s capitals
and Dublin, as feedback from participants indicated that they would
like the challenge to be longer next year, with extended stops to
admire the scenery.
With that much more to organise though he’s going to need some
help, so if you would like to be involved as a driver or autogas
supplier, or just want to help get it off the ground, contact Stephen
Calor Report Urges RHI Rethink
A report commissioned by
Calor Gas Ltd urges a
government rethink on what the
authors Dr John Constable and
Dr Lee Moroney describe as the
“irresponsible” plan for a
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
The RHI is designed to
incentivise domestic, commercial
and industrial customers to
switch from fossil-fuelled heating
to a specific set of renewable
technologies, including ground
and air source heat pumps and
solar water heating.
The Renewable Heat
Incentive: Risks And Remedies
report, released by the
environmental consultancy
Renewable Energy Forum,
assesses the cost-effectiveness
and impact of the RHI on
consumers using the
Department of Energy & Climate
Change’s (DECC) own charts
and figures.
The report claims that the RHI
is an expensive leap into the
4
dark, relying on the major
deployment of renewable heat
technologies that are new in the
UK, and that the Government’s
own estimates show that its
costs exceed the energy benefits
by £1.2bn to £13.4bn and
resulting carbon savings in 2020
are estimated to be only three
per cent of current emissions.
The report also says that the
RHI would increase the average
domestic gas bill by 14 per cent
(£94) per annum, and the
average medium sized
commercial gas bill by 19 per
cent (£86,000) by 2020, and
could, in practice, consume
around two per cent of the
annual income of the poorest
households, with the funds
going to the richest households,
which will be able to benefit from
the RHI subsidies.
The report states: “The funding
mechanism for the RHI is as yet
undetermined. The options are
either a levy on fossil fuel sold for
Festival in September.
heat, or a direct draw from
general taxation. A levy on fossil
fuel would fall on all users of fossil
fuels for heat, including off-grid
gas and oil consumers.
“This would almost certainly
mean that a significant proportion
of poorer members of society
would bear a disproportionate
share of the costs, and is very
likely to increase fuel poverty in
certain sectors, particularly rural
areas. DECC’s own analysis
suggests that government is
aware of this.”
The report concludes that the
actual costs and outcomes of
the proposed RHI are so
uncertain that it would be
irresponsible to proceed in the
current form, since it will expose
consumers subsidising the
scheme to the risk of high costs
without adequate assurances of
any compensating benefits.
Lpg Fleet Reaches Highest Level
On July 1, the number of ships in
the world lpg carrier fleet
reached its highest level so far,
totalling 1,092 ships with a
further 166 vessels on order,
according to the list in LPG
World Shipping compiled jointly
with BRL Shipping Consultants.
BRL Shipping Consultants
maintains a large shipping
database containing information
on 80,000 ships.
Mike Corkhill, editor of LPG
World Shipping, said: “Although
the lpg fleet, like all sectors of
shipping, has been impacted by
the economic recession,
contracts for new gas carriers
have begun to percolate through
once again in recent months to
replenish the order book.”
The fleet list in LPG World
Shipping is broken down by
generic types of carrier and
includes information on each
ship, its capacity, delivery date,
shipyard and owner, and the
fleet in which the vessel is
currently serving.
Lpg Forklifts Outperform Diesel
Retail delivery statistics from the
British Industrial Truck
Association (BITA) revealed that
lpg is increasing in popularity in
the forklift market. In June and
July, sales of lpg counterbalance
forklift trucks outsold those
powered by diesel and, in June,
sales of lpg trucks took a
massive 188 per cent increase
over the previous month’s sales.
The statistics also showed
that lpg forklifts accounted for
30.2 per cent of counterbalance
forklift trucks sold.
Jim Moyes, Calor Gas’ forklift
truck specialist, said the figures
came as no surprise.
He said: “The benefits of lpg in
the forklift market have been
widely recognised over recent
years, with all of the major
equipment manufacturers now
offering lpg models in their
product ranges. “LPG avoids the
6
lengthy charging periods
associated with electric trucks
and, as a cleaner burning fuel
than diesel, LPG results in less
potential for oil contamination
and reduced overall engine
wear. What’s more, lower
carbon emissions from engines
means that they can be used
inside in sensitive environments,
as well as outside on more
difficult terrains.”
Gas Safety
Trust Appoints
New Trustees
Four new trustees have been
appointed by gas
safety charity the Gas Safety
Trust. The CORGI Trust
changed its name to The Gas
Safety Trust in April and
relocated its office away
from the main CORGI office
at Chineham Park,
Basingstoke, to a new
location two miles away.
Nigel Dumbrell, trust
manager, said: “The Gas
Safety Trust has developed
into the UK’s leading gas
safety charity and as such the
Trustees decided it was time
to reflect its independence
from CORGI, for which
everyone appreciates and
respects all the financial and
marketing support it provided.
However, this is a new and
exciting era for the Gas Safety
Trust and our new strategy will
reflect our vision and aims for
the next two years.”
The new trustees are Phil
Brown, president of the
Institution of Gas Engineers
& Managers (IGEM) and gas
systems manager for
National Grid; Bob Kerr, head
of business integrity at
British Gas; Roger Webb,
deputy chief executive of the
Society of British Gas
Industries (SBGI) and
director of the Heating &
Hotwater Industry Council
(HHIC), and Bill Wright, the
Electrical Safety Council
independent energy
consultant and chair of the
Electrical Safety Council.
Mary Benwell, Gas Safety
Trust chair, said: “To have the
expert level of support from
all the Gas Safety Trust
trustees in this exciting
period of our development is
crucial and I look forward to
the additional contribution of
our new trustees in enabling
the trust to meet the
challenges and opportunities
of the future.”
BARBECUE TRADE
EXPECTED
Richard Plowman, secretary of the Leisure &
Outdoor Furniture Association, gives a round up
of barbecue trends for 2011 following the
association’s Summer Outdoor Leisure Exhibition.
The talk of the Summer Outdoor
Leisure Exhibition (SOLEX) in
July, organised by the Leisure &
Outdoor Furniture Association
(LOFA), was the great early
summer weather and how
stocks in the trade were selling
fast. These early season sales
inevitably created big interest
and demand from retailers at the
show who needed to replenish
stocks of barbecues and
outdoor furniture for 2011.
Barbecues have come a long
way from the original charcoal
burners, and lpg cooking is now
the number one choice fuel for
camping equipment and the
larger multi-burner wheel around
trolleys. Sixteen different
exhibitors, including Landmann,
Lifestyle Appliances, Outback
and Mountrose, were displaying
attractive gas barbecues and
cooking stations at SOLEX and
all reported good business in the
run up to 2011.
The trend towards
‘staycation’ holidays in 2010
8
Sales manager Charles Condor with Cadac's Braai Maxx.
created big demand for new gas
fired cooking equipment, as 54
per cent of Britons questioned in
spring planned to take their main
holiday in the UK. Perhaps the
resulting wet August dampened
enthusiasm for holidaying under
canvas, but not the demand for
using barbecues whenever a
warm day offered the
opportunity for alfresco dining.
Big name chefs are now being
used to drive extra endorsement
to some offerings. HeavenChef,
powered by Flogas, launched an
exciting new range of Marco
Pierre White gas barbecues and
grills. With distinctive point of
sale material featuring the
somewhat scary visage of the
famous cook glaring at
passersby, no one could miss
the link or the extra appeal that
this may give to the now large
range of innovative gas
barbecues and portable range
of MarcO-Grills. The colourful
easy carry MarcO-Grill is fuelled
with a disposable canister of
branded ‘O-Gas’ (propane) that
can be directly and easily
inserted into the grill to provide a
truly portable package.
Cadac were showing for the
first time the award-winning Braai
Maxx kitchen station that won
Gold at Spoga 2009 for barbecue
innovation. Two high performance
burners designed for a wide
range of temperatures from 900
C to 3000C provide
interchangeable cooking surfaces
that allow consumers to grill, stir
fry, bake or oven cook pizzas.
These surfaces include the Cadac
Skottel, wok, reversible ribbed
and flat grill plate, baking stone
and paella pan.
Britain’s number one
barbecue brand Weber seemed
to attract more customers than
anyone else at the show. With
50 years’ experience and a
unique appeal to professional
and novice barbecuers around
the world, its kettle grills are
world famous.
Following a major overhaul of
its charcoal line up for 2010, this
year many of Weber’s gas and
electric models are getting a
revamp. New vibrant colours will
be making a big splash for 2011
on the redesigned Q range.
Light and versatile Weber Qs are
ideal for those people who want
to take their barbecue on the go.
Flare-ups and the burnt food
that results from fat dropping
onto burner surfaces are
obviously a fresh focus to some
barbecue manufacturers. All
OutdoorChef’s gas barbecues
now feature a factoryassembled
burner protected by
a patented porcelain enamelled
funnel system that protects the
burner from dripping fat. The
LP GAS MAGAZINE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010
Grillstream inventor Peter Neath explains to Dragon's Den cameras the launch by
Leisuregrow of their no-flare improvement to lp gas barbecues.
kettle shape allows for direct
and all round indirect cooking
and the funnel system means no
more flare-ups because it guides
any liquids safely into the drip
pan below. It does this while
maintaining an authentic
barbecue flavour.
The 2011 Outdoor Chef range
includes ten premium gas kettle
barbecues, all of which
incorporate the unique funnelsystem
technology. Top of the
range is the Venezia with two
separate ring burners and
gourmet design trolley complete
with granite work surface to the
smaller futuristic trolley of the
Delta 480.
On the Leisuregrow stand, the
inventors of the GrillStream
patented double grill bar system,
which makes flare-ups a thing of
the past, were on hand to explain
their moment of fame on last
year’s Dragon’s Den. Developing
the invention into a unique range
of traditional and gas fired
barbecues has been the privilege
of Richard Grimmer, managing
director of distributor Leisuregrow,
who was proud to welcome a
BBC crew onto the stand so they
could film the next stage in getting
the invention to market.
With the patented Grillstream
system fitted to traditional and
gas fired barbecues, anyone can
cook with confidence. Videos
showed how the system still
allows direct grilling through the
bars yet, because of their V
shape, fat and drain liquids away
from the burners or coals to
prevent flare-ups.
BARBECUING
PLEASURE
WHATEVER THE
WEATHER
OMC brand Broil King reports major sales growth
of its lpg barbecues this year as UK consumers
enjoy outdoor entertaining. Mike Francis, OMC’s
UK general sales manager, tells us why.
Broil King is the major barbecue
brand of the Onward
Manufacturing Company Ltd
(OMC), a Canadian family
owned company established in
1906. As a leading manufacturer
and distributor of quality lpg
barbecue products in over 30
countries, OMC has built an
enviable reputation for quality,
durability and cooking
performance. It’s UK operation,
based in Neston, Cheshire, has
been running for over 10 years,
distributing through Calor Gas
showrooms and a network of
outdoor leisure independents.
In 2010, OMC has seen a
significant rise even on the record
sales of 2009. Our sales
performance this year was
boosted by the great weather
before the May Bank Holidays,
which is traditionally the start of
the barbecue season. The
football World Cup also
contributed but, overall, UK
consumers are discovering how
easy it is to cook with lpg models,
particularly Broil King, as they are
so versatile, offering direct or
convection oven cooking.
We find our independent
retailers take the time to explain
all the features of our models so
customers understand the full
range of possibilities beyond
flipping sausages and burgers –
that you can roast a chicken,
cook a pizza or even bake a
cake with one of our models.
They are also assured of our
great quality, being built in North
America and not China, and our
10
Imperial XL.
warranties range from two to five
years on our stainless steel
burners and limited lifetime on
our die-cast aluminium ovens.
We also back this up with
excellent after sales service and
we’re committed to ensuring the
availability of genuine
replacement parts for many
years to come. Overall, Broil
King gas barbecues deliver
great results, making
barbecuing a pleasure whatever
the weather.
Broil King lpg models range
from under £200 to £2,000. On
the larger models, the cabinets
provide ample room to store a
13kg propane cylinder and their
trademark Sure-Lite ignition
system offers peace of mind for
lighting the barbecue regardless
of weather conditions.
Broil King’s flagship model is
the impressive Imperial XL,
which features six stainless
Dual-Tube steel burners and a
massive cooking surface. This
provides the flexibility of precise
heat control, with two separate
ovens allowing cooking at
different temperatures at the
same time. This model has it all,
whether entertaining two people
or twenty-two.
Slightly smaller in size but
equally impressive are the Regal,
Sovereign and Signet models.
With the Monarch, the
exceptional quality remains the
same, which is what sets this
series apart from its rival brands.
It features a rustproof cast
aluminium oven, the unbeatable
11.4kW Super 8 Infinity Dual
Burner and durable stainless
steel components, making this a
dependable barbecue with great
value for all to enjoy.
Two of Broil King’s best sellers,
the Gem and Gem Super,
although smaller, are built to the
same rigorous standards. They’re
loaded with quality features not
normally found with other entrylevel
models. The Gems are
perfect for smaller families and
tight spaces without sacrificing
cooking efficiency. Features
include an 8.8kW stainless steel
dual burner and a trivet side
burner on the Gem Super.
OMC has seen a significant rise even on the record sales of 2009.
Porta-Chef.
There are two portable
barbecues in the range – the
Porta-Chef and the newly
launched Porta-Chef Pro. Cooking
on the go has never been more
convenient than with these two
models, which are probably the
most powerful portable barbecues
available. The sturdy legs quickly
snap into place, providing a stable
standalone barbecue with enough
cooking surface to cater for the
whole family. Features include a
stainless steel 4.7kW burner, the
Flav-R-Wave cooking system,
porcelain-coated cast iron cooking
grid on the Porta-Chef Pro and a
retractable warming rack.
OMC undertook a UK public
relations campaign this year that
included sponsorship of the
Rugby Sevens Tournament at
Twickenham in May and a
broadcast campaign featuring
England player Nick Easter. A
barbecuing enthusiast himself,
Nick was amused by results of a
consumer survey by Broil King
highlighting men’s fascination
with outdoor cooking and their
overall confidence when
equipped with a high quality lpg
barbecue. Outdoor cooking
becomes a pleasure not a chore,
particularly when linked to sports
events and entertaining friends,
and perhaps this, combined with
some sunshine and a Broil King
barbecue, is the key to further
growth in the UK.
OUTDOOR LEISURE
Cadac Bringing Real Innovation
Cadac first launched in Europe in
Holland in 1992 and, in January,
Cadac UK was set up with
offices, warehousing and
manufacturing in Sheffield. Cadac
is a 60-year-old South African
company that has been the
market leader for barbecues in its
home country for many decades.
Charles Conder, general
manager at Cadac UK, said:
“Cadac Corner is as familiar at
South African sporting events as
the Guinness tent at
Twickenham or the Foster’s tent
at The Oval. The original Cadac
Skottel barbecue was based on
a curved plough head used by
farmers to cook meat and was
principally designed as a
camping/day trip barbecue.
“The company’s strength has
always been product innovation
and improvement, with a large
team of designers based in
Europe, here in the UK and in
South Africa. It still leads the
world in camping barbecues,
but has now turned its design
and innovation skills to patio
barbecues as well.”
Cadac intends to broaden its
distribution of both camping and
patio barbecues, particularly at
independent distributors, such
as garden centres.
Charles said: “Our build and
design quality is second to none,
we have outstanding point of
sale and our pricing is
competitive. We have the
opportunity to bring real
innovation to a market where
successful new ideas are a rarity.
“Our products have featured in
Good Housekeeping magazine,
on Channel 5’s The Gadget
Show, ITV’s Good Morning –
Phillip Schofield was particularly
enthusiastic about the Skottel for
stir-frying – and we also expect to
appear on another terrestrial TV
programme within the next few
months. This exposure is likely to
increase throughout the next 12
to 18 months and filming has just
been completed for inclusion on
a major terrestrial programme
due out in spring 2010, featuring
the Meridian barbecue.”
Cadac will launch two new
barbecues for 2011. Meridian is
a range of European designed
hooded and flattop barbecues
with three or four burners. The
Braai Maxx has interchangeable
cooking surfaces and
independently heat controlled
dual hooded burner boxes that
allow consumers to grill, stir-fry,
bake or oven cook. It includes
two five-jet burners that
allow temperatures from
90 to 350 degrees
Celsius.
Charles said: “The current
state of the economy, combined
with the poor exchange rate,
means that the so called
‘staycation’ is a reality – 54 per
cent of Britons plan to take their
main holiday in the UK according
to a survey by YouGov for The
Sunday Times, and campsite
bookings have seen double digit
growth for the past two years.
The number of barbecues sold
for festivals – at least half a million
people attended festivals in 2009
– and day trip use has also
increased significantly over the
past few years, and this is a real
opportunity for garden centres to
extend their barbecue category.”
OUTDOOR LEISURE
PERSONALISING
THE ALFRESCO
EXPERIENCE
Despite the changeable weather often
associated with the typical British summer,
outdoor leisure is a growing industry in the UK.
Henry Cubbon, managing director of Flogas and
its specialist barbecue division HeavenChef,
explains why the market is expanding and how
this provides opportunities for the lpg industry.
From barbecues and alfresco
dining to lazy summer evenings
in the garden, outdoor leisure
activities are becoming
increasingly popular in the
UK. As a result, we are
seeing growing numbers of
consumers investing heavily
in creating the right
environment for their outdoor
space and the products that
they select to do this. In turn,
this has created a stronger
marketplace for lpg fuelled
leisure products.
Whether it’s barbecues, patio
heaters or lighting, dull, one-sizefits-all
designs no longer cut it
with consumers. Instead, we are
seeing homeowners demand
products that offer a careful
balance of stylish aesthetics and
performance, and can be
tailored to meet their personal
needs, and lpg designed goods
provide the perfect route to
accomplishing this.
For example, when it comes
to barbecues, consumers don’t
automatically opt for a simple
charcoal box as they may have
done a few years ago. Instead,
they are looking for
technologically advanced
products that not only help them
to show off their outdoor
cooking prowess, but are also
versatile enough to meet their
requirements.
This is just one of the reasons
why we have seen a significant
increase in purchases of lpg
powered barbecues in recent
12
MarcO-Grill 1000.
years. Portable, lightweight lpg
barbecues, such as HeavenChef’s
MarcO-Grill 1000 endorsed by
Marco Pierre White, are proving
increasingly popular with
homeowners, camping
enthusiasts, caravanners and
festivalgoers alike. The reason
being that technological
advancements, such as built in
regulators, which allow the
barbecue to be instantly
connected to portable gas
canisters or full-sized leisure
cylinders, mean it can be used
with ease both at home and away.
For others, however, the
barbecue is seen as an
extension of the kitchen and a
tool for flaunting their
barbecuing expertise. The
increasing popularity of
television cookery shows has
seen more and more people
striving to hone their culinary
skills, and an lpg barbecue
provides them with the perfect
tool to showcase their talents
HeavenChef Olympic.
thanks to the level of fuel control
some products offer. This has
opened up the market for
grander barbecues, such as
HeavenChef’s Olympic or
Titan models, which
incorporate everything the
keen barbecuer requires,
from moisture bays that
prevent food from drying out
to glass viewing panels built
into the hood.
This quest by consumers
to find personalised products
to suit their needs does not end
with barbecues. Lpg powered
patio heaters have also
experienced a similar trend.
Again, today’s energy and cost
conscious consumer will look for
a product that has been tailored
to suit their needs. For example,
we are seeing a rising popularity
of eco-friendly patio heaters, such
HeavenChef Titan.
LP GAS MAGAZINE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010
as the Enders Eco heater, which
provides 83 per cent less CO2
emissions than some other
standard heaters, as consumers
strive to go green and spend less.
With a wider selection of
outdoor leisure products to
choose from and the launch of an
extensive range of price points,
the concept of outdoor living has
become accessible and, more
significantly, appealing to the
mass market. As major DIY
retailers offer a whole host of gas
appliances as standard,
increasing numbers of people are
being introduced to the outdoor
leisure market, and there can be
no doubt that this marketplace
will continue to grow.
SEEING LEISURE
SECTOR GROWTH
By Steve Goldsworthy, area sales
manager, Lifestyle Appliances Ltd
Lifestyle Appliances has seen a lot of changes
in the outdoor leisure industry over a short
period of time.
After a difficult trading period in
the last two years, this year has
seen a growth in all Lifestyle
Appliances’ business sector sales
for outdoor leisure, including lp
gas barbecues and patio and
greenhouse heaters, and
industrial products, where we are
going from strength to strength.
Our top of the range Lifestyle
stainless steel Connoisseur Pro
gas barbecues, available in four,
five and seven burner models
and with the option of additional
stainless steel freestanding units
to create a complete outdoor
theatre, are creating a great
amount of interest, as is the
Lifestyle range of Aurora Deluxe
barbecues, available with two,
three or four burners in either
flatbed lid or full hooded versions.
The current market for budget
gas barbecues is seeing low
prices that have never been
seen before in the marketplace.
Lifestyle greenhouse heater.
However, we believe this will
benefit the quality end of the
barbecue market, opening it up
for consumers wanting to trade
up to the mid and top quality
gas grills.
There is still a lot of general
interest in our gas patio heaters
and we are continuing to receive
enquires from the commercial
and general leisure sectors.
Lifestyle has the ideal lpg patio
heater range to extend the
outdoor leisure period into the
autumn evenings.
Also, with the push for more
‘grow your own’ requirements,
our lpg greenhouse heater has
generated a large amount of
interest and sales. The heater is
designed for glass greenhouses,
supplying 1.9kW heat output,
and is fully thermostatically
controlled and supplied with
hose and gas regulator.
Having launched our lpg
Lifestyle connoisseur Pro outdoor theatre.
industrial equipment catalogue
12 months ago, Lifestyle
Appliances’ market share has
gained great recognition within
the industry. We still continue to
receive positive feedback as one
of the most comprehensive lpg
industrial catalogues produced.
We are also continuing our
process of fully updating our
website, which will shortly be
listing our full range in detail. This
will enable our customers to view
our catalogue online at any time.
As a direct result of this, our
industrial lpg product sales have
continued to show good growth,
and products, such as our
cabinet heaters, site heaters and
gas accessories, have produced
a steady increase in the general
market share for Lifestyle.
Aurora. Lifestyle commercial patio heater.
Barbecue Style Revolution
John Brunner and Jeremy
Taylor, co-founders of British
design house and manufacturer
Designer Holdings, have
partnered with a Danish furniture
design team to launch the new
Grilltech C-BBQ range.
John Brunner said: “This year,
barbecues get a much needed
style makeover with our awardwinning
brand Grilltech releasing
the new contemporary C-BBQ
range. ’Cool’, ‘minimalist’ or
‘chic’ were not adjectives used
to describe barbecues until we
set about a style evolution,
transforming the humble grill into
an object of desire.
Incorporating cutting edge
design, with durability and
exceptional quality, the range
comprises three sleek stainless
steel models offering luxurious
grilling experiences that look and
perform like no other.”
The C-BBQ 1 is a professional
grade gas barbecue and, with a
3,123cm2 cooking area, it’s the
Leisuregrow Products Ltd
has launched new barbecue
ranges incorporating
Grillstream, a new grilling
technology that was seen on
the BBC television show
Dragon’s Den. A follow up
show was filmed on the
Leisuregrow stand at the
Solex exhibition in July and
will air in early 2011.
Leisuregrow’s 200,
14
largest grill in the range. The
rectangular stainless steel model
features a patented roll away
roasting lid operated by a side
handle, multi-functional wooden
shelving that can be turned
down to house cooking utensils
or opened out to extend the
cooking space, cast iron grills
and two high power extra long
burners, eliminating cold spots.
The C-BBQ 2 and C-BBQ 3
models are designed for smaller
terraces and balconies. Like the
C-BBQ 1, they are equipped
with cast iron grills and patented
space saving features, including
300 and 600 Series models all
incorporate its Grillstream
technology. Specially shaped
double grills channel
dripping fats generated
during cooking away from
the heat source, which
allows the food to grill safely
and more healthily whilst
maintaining the barbecue
taste. The Grillstream grills
heat food to the optimum
temperature for juices to turn
into smoke, which then
infuses the food with the
barbecue flavour.
Lauren
Woodgate at
Leisuregrow said:
“Leisuregrow barbecues,
which incorporate
Grillstream technology, are
the first real innovation
since the invention of the
gas barbecue. This
revolutionary technology
ensures food is cooked in a
more controlled way, so that
food is succulent and
an integral fold down roasting lid
that rotates 180 degrees and is
concealed under the 1,600cm2
cooking area, plus a slide out
drip tray for easy cleaning.
John said: “Grilltech set out
with the mission to create a
barbecue that didn’t look like a
barbecue. Barbecues tend to
have very little design input and
they can be a bit of an eyesore
on a beautiful rooftop or balcony.
This product was crying out for a
redesign.”
Buoyed with the simple
mission of redesigning the un-
maintains that authentic
barbecue flavour. It also
eliminates flare-ups, which
are the cause of so many
burnt sausages and chicken
Leisuregrow says the
Grillstream system is the first
to completely eradicate flareups
and fat fires as the
cooking grease is channelled
WEBER TRANSFORMS
FOR 2011
By John Cooper, managing director,
Weber UK
As British barbecue experts, Weber is excited
to be launching a series of new innovations for
2011 that are set to take the outdoor leisure
industry by storm.
Weber is the UK’s number one
barbecue brand, with over 50
years’ expertise in producing
outdoor gas grills of exceptional
quality and style. Following a
major overhaul of our charcoal
line up in 2010, this year, many of
Weber’s gas models are getting
a revamp, with a number of new
features that should appeal to
retailers and consumers alike.
GENESIS
Weber has radically transformed
its classic Genesis range,
bringing a whole new dimension
to the UK’s gas barbecue
offering. Featuring design and
technology elements inspired by
its ‘big brother’ – the top of the
range Weber Summit – the new
Genesis models are an evolution
of design and functionality.
Consumer studies indicate that
Weber Genesis consumers want
additional workspace, so
significant enhancements have
been made in this area. Advances
in valve ignition systems have
allowed the control knobs to be
moved to the front, providing the
additional workspace. The front
control panel also allows for
migration of Summit technologies.
The new entry level Genesis
E310 is set to be a bestseller
with its stunning good looks.
The model features two locking
casters, two fixed casters, a
porcelain-enamelled shroud and
a centre-mounted thermometer.
There are two stainless steel
work surfaces and three
stainless steel burners, plus
porcelain-enamelled cooking
grates, porcelain-enamelled
Flavorizer bars, a total cooking
area of 637 sq in and a warming
rack area of 130 sq in.
The Genesis E310 also has
a 42,000 BTU/hour input, a
limited 25-year warranty and is
available in the S-310 stainless
steel version.
SEAR
The inventive new Genesis E-
330 Grill Centre is a real
standout product with a high in
store impact. The ‘outdoor
kitchen’ offers more workspace
and storage, with a number of
enriched features, such as a
front mounted control panel with
style kettle knobs, advanced
valve ignition system, a porcelain
enamelled shroud with centre
thermometer and the new
10,000 BTU/hour input sear
burner Sear Station.
The all-new high-powered
Weber Sear Station boost
burner creates a temporary high
heat zone, which flash sears
steaks to perfection, creating
beautiful caramelised grill
marks and sealing in juices.
After searing, slide the meat to
a cooler zone of the grill to
finish cooking – the ‘sear and
TELEMETRY
IMPROVING SUPPLY
EFFICIENCY
By Dave Oakes, sales director,
Powelectrics Ltd
New generation telemetry benefits you, your
customers and the environment.
There’s no disputing that last
winter was a harsh one that
provided lpg suppliers with some
additional challenges – road
closures, harsh conditions and
the restrictions of the working
time directive made it increasingly
difficult to deliver product where it
was needed most.
The challenges facing any
form of logistics are continually
increasing, with the cost of fuel
always on the rise and ever more
congestion on the roads, so it’s
therefore no great surprise that
the European Chemical Industry
Council (CEFIC) is encouraging
the extended use of Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) tools to
improve supply chain efficiency.
According to the Department
for Transport, by 2015, total
traffic on the roads will have
grown by over 30 per cent in the
UK compared to 2000 levels, and
the CBI has estimated that road
congestion costs the UK up to
£20 billion per year. Since 2000,
the price of fuel has increased 42
per cent, so it’s certainly not
going to get cheaper to distribute
The price of fuel has increased by
42% since 2000.
16
86% of deliveries could be made more efficiently.
lpg in the future.
Help is at hand in the form of
the Metron series from
Powelectrics, which leads the
way in next generation telemetry
devices, bringing down solution
costs and opening up
applications that were previously
hard to justify. Wire-free, low
cost flexible communications
from an internal battery leads to
a quick and easy installation.
The use of Metron telemetry
devices for tank level monitoring
has seen an increase in drop size
of 34 per cent, leading to
significant cost savings and a
dramatic reduction in CO2
emissions. But the benefits don’t
stop there. There are operational
benefits, with fewer emergency
shipments, reduced customer
service requirements and
reduced sales resources needed.
The balance sheet can look
healthier, as inventory visibility
downstream can reduce the
inventory requirement upstream.
Sales can be increased as you
have a saleable service to your
customer, there’s increased
customer retention, and you can
even improve your margins by
serving more customers with the
same number of vehicles in your
fleet. There are some intangible
benefits too, such as a better
use of sales force time and the
establishment of an integrated
link with your customers.
A successful programme
makes a supplier more
competitive while also increasing
the success of the customer,
resulting in long term supply
relationships and wins for both
parties. Analysis in the lpg sector
has shown that 86 per cent of
deliveries could be made more
efficient and that, once telemetry
has been fitted, 24 per cent fewer
deliveries are needed in order to
supply the same volume to the
same number of customers.
Wire-free solutions make
installation very quick, and
multichannel devices significantly
lower the total solution cost.
Telemetry has never been as
affordable. Low cost
communications, coupled with
cost effective hardware and data
delivery solutions, means that
Powelectrics can offer a 62 per
cent saving on a project when
compared to alternative vendors.
UK based Powelectrics
develops and manufactures
technologically advanced
products that have already
helped secure contracts from
global giants Air Products and
Shell, and the company is
forecasting significant growth in
the next few years, bringing new
jobs to the region.
The philosophy is simple –
wire-free devices that are easy
to install, easy to use and
affordable. The range includes
devices with ATEX approval for
use in potentially explosive
environments.
LP GAS MAGAZINE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010
Improve margins by serving more customers with the same number of vehicles.
Metron has seen a 34% drop size increase.
Flexibility is important and
Powelectrics devices can
interface to a wide range of
sensor types, as well as
supporting a number of
protocols for onward
communications. Customers
want to be in control and able to
use their own sim cards and
servers to collect the data. Data
can be delivered into your IT
infrastructure, ensuring benefits
are maximised.
Powelectrics was successful
at the 2009 British Engineering
Excellence Awards and the
achievements in the design of
the award-winning Metron2
were twofold.
Traditionally, industrial
products requiring installation
have a poor level of user
feedback, which means that the
installer is working almost blind.
The LCD graphical display on
the Metron2 makes the
commissioning process clear
and simple, using a logical menu
system. The display also offers
local access to measurements if
required.
At the same time, the Metron2
is designed to compete at the
price sensitive end of the
GSM/GPRS telemetry market. It
proves that a compact, reliable
and functional telemetry system
offering a great user experience
can now be realised at low cost.
Powelectrics consulted
extensively with users at all
levels on the final design of the
menu system and the layout of
information on the display, a
point that particularly impressed
the BEEA judges.
WIRELESS MONITORING AT HEART
By Steve Fitzgerald, Vectec Ltd
Wireless telemetry and lpg are at
the very heart of Vectec Ltd, and
have been for over 10 years.
We at Vectec pride ourselves
on being at the leading edge of
wireless technology for lpg. All
our products are developed inhouse
and manufactured in
Europe, and this close physical
relationship between design and
manufacture yields tremendous
benefits for all parties.
The heart of our system is a
GSM GPRS unit, which can be
either battery or mains operated.
It has an onboard local radio
frequency communications link
and can interface with a range of
different sensors, providing near
real-time data to our clients. For
lpg, we use the industry leading
Hall Effect dials from Rochester.
When the GPRS unit is battery
enabled, the unit has a life
expectancy of 10 years, making
it almost maintenance free and
Combined Gas Systems Ltd
is pleased to extend its range of pumps,
compressors, vaporisers and air/gas
mixers to complement its already
extensive range of bulk tank equipment.
New to its range are:
• Corken pumps and compressors
• Algas-SDI range of LPG vaporisers and
gas/air mixers
All equipment supplied by Combined Gas Systems is
supported by field based qualified/factory trained
engineers and technicians.
We are able to offer a full design, installation,
commissioning, service and maintenance for this range
of equipment.
Combined Gas Systems is a leading supplier and
installer of autogas dispensing equipment and supports
these installations with its 24 hour, 365 days a year
maintenance support contracts.
ideal for remote locations. With
over 40,000 telemetry units
deployed throughout Europe for
clients, such as Butagaz,
Primagaz, Shell and Total, we
have built up an enviable
position within our industry for
reliable, cost effective wireless
telemetry solutions.
The tank installation takes
around a couple of hours. The
Hall Effect device, which is
hardwired into an ATEX
approved radio frequency
transmitter, communicates the
tank’s residual volume of lpg to
our GPRS unit. We offer a bulk
inventory monitoring solution
based on telemetry that is
certified as ATEX zone 1.
Low cost Hall Effect sensors
from Rochester are installed on
the lpg tanks and connected to
a GSM transmitter. Radio
frequency is used for both above
and belowground tanks to
ensure the GSM transmitter is
placed outside with a good
We are also main distributors for the below
listed brands:
• Corken pumps and compressors
• Fisher Controls LP Gas regulators and valves
• Chemet LPG tanks
• Algas-SDI vaporisers and gas/air mixers
• FAS equipment
• Gilbarco Veeder Root equipment
• Yenen dispensers
• Red Jacket submersible pumps
• Ninnelt cylinder filling equipment
• Rochester storage tank and road tanker
level gauges
To extend the life of your assets, we also offer a full
reconditioning service using manufacturer certified
parts.
network connection. The
frequency of the measurements
and the transmission of the data
are determined by our clients.
The captured data is
transmitted via GPRS to a
central database for M2M
processing. Clients are provided
with visibility on lpg volume
levels and alarms by SMS and
email when the emergency level
is reached. The use of our
technology provides lpg
suppliers with remote monitoring
and alarms to reduce their costs
and keep their customers happy.
No longer do customers have
to worry about their lpg tanks
running dry as we can also
patch the alarms into a preferred
lpg supplier so that they can also
monitor the lpg levels and advise
when a top up is necessary.
Lpg consumption can be
monitored on a monthly, weekly or
daily level and the data accessed
via our unique web interface and
imported into an Excel
spreadsheet. Customers can then
see usage levels plotted over time
and compare consumption, which
is especially useful when doing
any forward budget planning.
Lpg distributors use our
technology as a bulk inventory
monitoring solution to manage
their customers’ stocks,
optimise deliveries and
significantly reduce logistics
costs. Waiting for customers’
requests for deliveries leads to
urgent shipments, inefficient
tanker routing and inaccurate
planning. This increases costs,
which are passed onto clients
unnecessarily.
All in all, we have a highly
reliable technical solution for
monitoring lpg in the field and,
with years of experience under our
belt, you can now take the worry
out of maintaining and monitoring
lpg in your organisation.
Rewriting the Rulebook
Richard Smith, technical
regulators manager at Clesse
(UK) Ltd, says the company has
decided to rewrite the rulebook
on domestic tank regulators to
produce equipment tailored for
the requirements of the UK
market.
He said: “The brief was to
design a range of tank
equipment in modular form that
could combine the best of
Clesse’s current range and
develop new, and ensure it was
not only interchangeable with
current equipment in the field,
but also reliable and cost
effective, and would embrace
both two and three stage
regulating pressures.”
Using his experience as an lpg
engineer, managing director Kaz
Dziamarski thought it was
evident that what the lpg
industry needed was a new tank
regulator.
He said: “It was evident that it
had to be a ‘clean piece of
paper’ approach to design –
take the best of the rest and
improve on it, use the best
quality materials and, finally and
most importantly, listen to the
people who will ultimately buy
and use it.”
Design work began three
years ago at Clesse’s Italian
Novacomet factory with initial
drafts and concepts.
Kaz said: “Claudio Peli and his
team revelled in the opportunity
as, not only was this a new
BP2203.
18
APZ400.
project, but it would be a major
part of the new Novacomet, now
specialising in bulk tank
regulation for Clesse.
“Careful consideration was
taken with regard to reliability
and ease of use. UPSO resets
followed standard industry reset
procedures to make it simple to
talk the customer through any
reset. The OPSO was designed
to have a clear cover so an
‘armed’ indicator could be seen.
The clear cap was also captive
to the reset spindle, enabling
easy resetting upon trip off,
engaging when the seal is
broken and cap is unscrewed.”
Kaz says size and
configuration were also
considerations – it had to be
small enough to fit under the
hood and big enough to give the
performance required. The
design route called for a nominal
10.5kg/h of lpg to be passed by
the regulator with a low inlet
pressure of 0.45bar, whilst
maintaining a constant outlet
pressure of 37mbar. In most
situations, the regulator delivers
37mb pressure to cover most
typical 70kW installations down
to 0.2bar inlet pressure, giving
stability and additional capacity.
Richard said: “Not only does
this new regulator, known as the
BP2203, work admirably at
37mbar, it will also perform the
same at an outlet pressure of
75mbar; with the 75mbar
version, UPSO is not required.
This gives the choice to ‘where
practicable’ provide a lowpressure
intermediate solution
for three stage systems.
“Trials of the BP2203 proved
so successful that the regulator
very quickly went into production
after two seasons of trials. It’s
now been over a year since full
production started and reliability
has been second to none. The
ease of installation and use is so
user friendly that it’s becoming
the standard in domestic bulk
regulation in the UK.”
The BP2203’s new OPSO has
been fitted to all Clesse’s range
of domestic and medium
capacity tank regulators. In
addition, high and low-pressure
variants are available as
standalone units.
Clesse UK has a range of
standard regulators in a modular
form that can be assembled to
supply any two-stage installation
up to 75kg/h of lpg using three
regulators, and three stage
pressure systems currently up to
25kg/h.
Richard Smith said: “It doesn’t
stop there; we stock commercial
sizes from 120kg/h to 1,200kg/h
so, since joining Clesse in
March, I have had an extensive
palette to work from and look
forward to giving our customers
the service and solutions they
are looking for.
“Kaz’s initial brief stated that
there was one other thing,
based on his experience, he
wanted to achieve, one limiting
factor that should be considered
– the capacity of our engineers’
vans! We think that, with the
advent of the Clesse modular
format, van stocks can be
significantly reduced by holding
stocks of individual regulators
and kits flexible enough when
correctly coupled together to
supply up to 90 per cent of
installations in one hit. All in all, it
looks like job done!”
week in an intense, short run,
stop-start operation, but we were
finding that the hours were
incredibly high for some trucks but
not others, with associated
penalties. We now direct drivers to
use specific trucks for each shift,
saving money and optimising the
management of scheduled
maintenance.”
Barloworld introduced its new
fleet management system to
Britvic in 2009, which uses a
telemetry device (BTD) to transmit
data from all Britvic’s trucks directly
to Barloworld’s secure back office
management system. The system
collects, analyses and reports
truck performance data, such as
hour meter readings, impacts,
maintenance completion and cost
of ownership information. Data for
all sites is then accessible through
a secure online portal, also
providing an instant audit trail.
Goods received at Lutterworth
are transferred from the lorries to
an automated pallet handling
system by the Hyster H4.0FT
trucks and then stored in high bay
warehousing with over 50,000
pallet locations. More than 300
pallets are then typically picked per
containers by Hyster Fortens
H2.5FT Advance on a ramp. The
Fortens trucks feature the
Duramatch transmission, helping
to reduce tyre wear, and low
maintenance wet brakes.
Steve said: “The drivers like the
Hyster trucks. It’s their office and
so they have to be comfortable,
with fingertip hydraulics and
various other features helping
them to continually perform well
whilst maintaining a safe working
environment.”
Pallets are also transferred to
the case picking area where 12
Hyster LO2.0M low-level order
pickers and two Hyster
J1.80XMTs are used for picking
around 30,000 cases in 24 hours.
Barloworld also maintains the
floor cleaning equipment onsite
and provides other services, such
as driver training and short-term
hire equipment.
Chris said: “Barloworld operates
as Britvic’s partner, providing a
dynamic and flexible service
across the UK. The team
understands our business, drives
down costs and continually
improves efficiency as our
AUTOGAS
Autogas Challenge Showcases Developments
The first Autogas Challenge was
held on September 10–12, with
the drivers of 14 lpg vehicles
competing to achieve the
smallest difference between the
mileage their cars could
accomplish on petrol and lpg.
Vehicles competing in the
challenge included Audi, Land
Rover, Rover and Volvo, and
conversion systems included
BRC, Fema, Landi Renzo,
OMVL and Romano. A tri-fuel
Toyota Prius, which can run on
petrol, lpg and electricity, was
also entered.
Gas Power UK customer
Stephanie Brown was the
winner in her BRC converted
Range Rover with a -5.7 per
cent difference from petrol using
the What Car? used vehicle
guide figure for petrol
consumption. In second was
Karl Lowe of Worsley Autogas,
also in a Range Rover with a
20
L–R: Cllr John Turner, Stephen Fricker and Cllr Carolyn Rule MP.
Elaflex HIBY Tanktechnik
GmbH & Co, based in
Hamburg, Germany, has
acquired a stake in lpg
nozzle manufacturer L G
Equipment Pty Ltd (LGE),
based in Sydney, Australia.
LGE designs, manufactures
and distributes the GasGuard
lpg nozzle for vehicle and
industrial filling applications.
Philip Treloar, managing
director of L G Equipment,
said: “This deal is a perfect
synergy. We are the market
leader for lpg nozzles in the
Asia Pacific and other
BRC system, with -6.9 per cent,
and in third was Kathryn Fricker
of Gas Power UK in a BRC Fly
system Rover 75 with - 16 per
cent.
Cllr Carolyn Rule, Cabinet
Member for Economy and
Regeneration, started the
challenge on September 10 at
Lima Autogas in Lands End,
Cornwall, and the vehicles drove
on to an overnight stay in
Preston via filling stops at
Countrywide in Gloucester and
F1 Automotive in Bolton. They
then continued on to Inverness
the next day via BP Gas in
Livingstone, and arrived at John
O’Groats via Gleaner Oils in
Evanton on September 12.
Organiser Stephen Fricker of
Gas Power UK Ltd said: “One of
our aims is to highlight the
benefits of new and existing
technology, which reduce
carbon emissions thus causing
international regions. LGE's
customer base will benefit
greatly from the additional
high quality product lines
offered by Elaflex.
“The extensive lp gas
nozzle, hose and breakaway
coupling product
programme, along with the
imminent introduction of a
new High Flow GasGuard
nozzle, will extend the
opportunities for the
distribution network."
Both LGE and Elaflex will
maintain their current
distribution structures.
less damage to the environment.
Given the number of vehicles on
the road, it has the potential to
make a huge impact on the
carbon footprint across the
world. In addition, the potential
financial savings for drivers using
autogas technology are
considerable.
“This is the beginning of a
motor sport than anybody can
compete in, as it’s not solely
down to the equipment or car,
it’s down to driving styles and
planning a route that the vehicle
is the most economical on. This
is a motor sport that an ecowarrior
can easily be part of as it
is developing new systems that
use fuel more efficiently, and
therefore helping the
environment.
“In the last five years, the
autogas trade has made many
leaps forward from the old single
point mixer system with its
inherent problems, through the
multipoint IGS systems to the
The Autogas Challenge competitors.
Stefan Kunter, managing
director of Elaflex, said: “We
are very pleased to have a new
partner within our group in an
effort to further expand our lpg
product range. LGE's wellearned
reputation as a leading
manufacturer of quality lpg
nozzles fits perfectly with the
Elaflex philosophy.
“We have many
complementing products,
and therefore we will start to
reciprocally market these.
For example, we are
interested in marketing
special versions of the
LP GAS MAGAZINE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010
modern phased sequential
injection systems, which can have
a higher brake horsepower on lpg
than the same engine on petrol.
This has all developed to make
more reliable autogas systems
that we call ‘fit and forget’.
“The autogas industry has
now come of age and we are
showing the public what we
have been working on, from
clearing up the problems left by
the sub-professionals to
showcasing the new
developments within the
autogas industry – and having
fun to boot!
“I would like to say a big thank
you to all the people who
sponsored us, especially Gleaner
Oils, who stepped in at the last
minute to save the event. There
are plans to organise a capital
tour of London, Edinburgh,
Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff next
year, although we might reduce
that to three capitals, depending
on cost.”
Elaflex Acquires GasGuard
GasGuard nozzle range,
while LGE might start to
supplement their basket with
our ARK 19 safety break and
plasticiser free lpg 16 hose.
"There will be few
changes, and those will be to
the benefit of our customers.
LGE will continue to design,
produce and distribute lpg
nozzles at their present
location, with unchanged
staff and with Philip Treloar
as LGE's managing director."
UKLPG
The spectacular view.
A GENTLE, UNDULATING PATH
By Peter Roberts, ReManufacturing Services Ltd
Having championed the return of the regional meetings, I was asked to do a presentation
as they were short of speakers. Then I was asked to join the walk up Scope End…
My reluctance to do the walk to
Scope End, organised during
UKLPG’s Northern Regional
Meeting in September, went
back to similar assault on Scafell
Pike in the Lake District. Not
being a hill walker did not deter
me, or the fact I was relatively
unfit. If my wife can do
Kilimanjaro, what’s 3,000ft?
The fact that I carried half the
mountain back down from
Scafell, which someone secretly
concealed in my rucksack, was
not the reason I was reluctant to
join this latest safari. It was simply
that, for two weeks after, my legs
didn’t work properly. Just in case
I was persuaded to join them, I
slipped out and bought the
smallest rucksack I could find!
That evening, our leader put
his case – it’s only a nine-mile
walk and 2,000ft, it’s a gentle,
undulating path across a ridge
surrounded by heather and it’s
an easy climb. Some say he has
a secret lpg powered jet pack to
assist him on ascents, and that
in a previous life he was the
grand old Duke of York who had
10,000 men. All I know is, he’s
called Rob ‘It’s Not As Steep As
It Looks’ Shuttleworth, and this
time he could only muster seven
men to march up the hill.
From the car park, we walked
about half a mile to Scope End.
Where’s the path, Rob? Hang
on, I’ll look at the map. Map?
We’ve only been going 10
24
minutes and we’re lost already!
Don’t panic, he said, its right in
front of us. No, Rob, that’s a
shear cliff. Yes, he quipped,
same thing.
Lungs bursting and many
stops later, we reached the
ridge. There was heather, but
Rob’s “undulating path” veered
up another 500ft to Hindscarth.
Looking down over the edge
caused me to emit enough bio
methane to keep Keswick alight
for a week. Just as well the wind
had gotten up to force 5.
After climbing to Hindscarth,
the group were well spread out
so there was ample time for
lunch. Chris Obe had been
taking orders from members for
souvenirs from High Spy. I
wasn’t going to get caught again
and, having packed my lunch
into my tiny rucksack, I had
secretly superglued the zip.
I mentioned it seemed
sensible that people dress in
bright clothes when walking. Not
a bit of it, said Rob, the only
The intrepid walkers.
bright thing I carry is the big
orange cross to guide in the
rescue helicopter. My bio
methane output was then
sufficient to replace the
national grid.
After lunch – well, for some –
the traverse was uneventful and,
believe it or not, almost
undulating. Then we hit the edge
of High Spy.
Where’s the path, Rob? Don’t
know. Just walk down there, he
advised, pointing at what looked
like a dry ski jump, and see what
you can find. Everyone gingerly
edged down the steep slope
through slippery grass, except
Rob, who waited at the top,
saying he’d organise a rescue if
anyone fell.
Suddenly there was a shriek.
Robert Cato had found a
sheep’s skull. I clutched my
rucksack closer to my body,
crushing my lunch. He wasn’t
putting that in my bag for
another photo opportunity!
Reaching the bottom of the
LP GAS MAGAZINE OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010
ravine, there was a path back to
the car park. But Mr Its Not As
Steep As It Looks had other
plans. We were now going up
Maiden Moor. Why?! But my
protests were shouted down.
Reaching the top of Maiden
Moor first, I looked back at the
group spread out below.
Climbing Maiden Moor may not
have seemed an attractive idea
at the bottom but, at the top, it
did give a spectacular view of
the lake below. Maybe there was
something to this hill walking
after all.
Back at the hotel, it was
obvious that UKLPG is underresourced
– no crampons, no
ropes or ladders, not even a
parachute to help us. They must
do better!
It was also obvious that hill
walking or, as I would describe
it, mountaineering is a practiced
art. Chris Holton and Tony
Murphy were not only properly
equipped and dressed, they just
plodded on quietly as if they did
this every day. I, on the other
hand, cannot go losing the use
of my sparrow-like legs every
year after a foray up some
miserable mountain.
But, after a seven-hour
nonstop drive home, I got out of
the car and my legs still worked.
Three big climbs and I wasn’t a
cripple. Regional meetings next
year? Yes, please. Organising a
walk, Rob? Count me in.

TRAINING
Explaining ADR
Henry Laferla from K Training
explains the requirements of
ADR 2009 and The Carriage
of Dangerous Goods and Use
of Transportable Pressure
Equipment Regulations 2009.
Although ADR 2009 has been
around for nearly two years,
there has been some confusion
regarding some of the changes
affecting lpg operation,
especially the documentation
requirement regarding the
Tunnel Restriction code.
TRAINING
Everyone involved in the carriage
of dangerous goods must
receive training to ensure that
people and the environment are
protected. Attendance of a
course carried out by
Department for Transport
approved training providers is a
legal requirement and counts as
part of a drivers’ hours. A driver
must pass SQA exams to get an
ADR certificate. A failed exam
can be retaken without redoing
the course if taken within
16 weeks.
Drivers can refresh an ADR
certificate three to 12 months
before the expiry date and are
given a further five years, but
they must sit an initial course in
any failed modules at least
30 working days before the
expiry date.
VEHICLE MARKING
From January 1 2011, there will
be a requirement to mark
vehicles carrying more than 8
tonnes of limited quantities when
being carried in vehicles with
maximum mass over
12 tonnes. The location is
different whether the goods are
being carried in packages in a
transport unit or within containers.
EQUIPMENT
Every transport unit must have a
2kg dry powder portable fire
extinguisher suitable for fighting
a fire in the engine or cab of the
transport unit. In addition,
vehicles more than 7.5 tonnes
need 12kg, of which at least one
should have a minimum capacity
of 6kg; vehicles 3.5–7.5 tonnes
need 8kg dry powder, of which
at least one should have a
minimum capacity of 6kg, and
vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need
4kg. The 2kg fire extinguisher
may be deducted from the
minimum total capacity of the
extinguishers required.
Every transport unit also
needs a wheel chock of a size
suited to the maximum mass of
the vehicle and to the diameter
of the wheel; two self-standing
warning signs; a suitable
warning vest or warning clothing
for each member of the vehicle
crew, and eye rinsing liquid
(although not for danger label
numbers 1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1,
2.2 and 2.3).
Each member of the crew also
needs a warning vest, a portable
lighting apparatus without metal
surfaces liable to produce
sparks, a pair of protective
gloves and eye protection.
DOCUMENTATION
Each vehicle must also carry the
driver's ADR certificate; photo
identification for each member of
the crew; transport documents
covering all the dangerous
goods carried and, when
appropriate, the container
packing certificate; Instructions
In Writing; a copy of the main
text of the special agreement;
the certificate of approval for
each transport unit, and the
permit authorising the transport
operation, if applicable.
‘UN 1011 BUTANE, 2.1, (B/D)’
and ‘UN 1978 PROPANE, 2.1,
(B/D)’ are examples of permitted
dangerous goods descriptions.
The Tunnel restriction code (B/D)
isn’t needed if the vehicle won’t
be passing through a restricted
tunnel.
Empty, uncleaned receptacles
for gases with a capacity of not
more than 1,000 litres, should
have the words “EMPTY
PACKAGING”, “EMPTY
RECEPTACLE”, “EMPTY IBC” or
“EMPTY LARGE PACKAGING”,
as appropriate, followed by the
