In the fall of 2003 Limestone College announced that it 

was expanding its athletic department to include 

intercollegiate wrestling. While other institutions were 

dropping the sport, Limestone saw the rising popularity 

of wrestling in the South and became just the second 

college in the State of South Carolina and the 40 th 

institution in the nation to offer NCAA Division II 

Wrestling. 

The College’s first move was to hire a head coach to 

build the program. Out of a talented pool of 

applicants, Limestone selected Ben Stehura to take on 

the job. Stehura had previously served as an assistant 

coach for Cleveland State University, a nationally 

ranked Division I program. 

Stehura immediately set about the unique task of recruiting an entire team. This was a tall order; 

however, Stehura was up to the challenge. “I want to build on the growing popularity of wrestling in 

the South in addition to the strong crop of athletes being developed in Ohio and Pennsylvania,” 

Stehura said. “The Limestone College campus really sells itself, and these kids have a chance to be a 

part of history. This inaugural team will be something to remember.” 

Stehura and his staff were expected to bring in 30 student-athletes; however, they have exceeded that 

mark by bringing together a team of 40 young, diverse student-athletes to form their inaugural 

wrestling team. The team will wrestle a tough schedule that Coach Stehura feels will prepare them 

for the Northeast Regional Championships with the hopes of qualifying for nationals. 

Stehura says, “The process of recruiting an entire team was daunting, but the results have exceeded 

all my expectations. I am very excited about the upcoming season. We will have some depth, which 

is unusual for a first year program” Stehura said. “This team has quality students, quality athletes, 

and quality people. I look to the experience and leadership of some of our transfer students to help 

guide our talented freshman class. I want this team to progress throughout the year and peak for the 

post season. With hard work and dedication this first year will be exciting and the team should be 

fun to watch.” 

125 lb: The 125 lb. weight class is highlighted by Brent Clausing (Miamisburg OH) and Ian 

Barker (Summerville, SC). Clausing, the team’s first signee, was a state place winner at 

Miamisburg High School, while Barker was a 3-time state champion and 4A Wrestler of the Year at 

Summerville High School. Alex Abbott (Cowpens, SC), John Harper (Walhalla, SC), and 

Matthew Ross (Chicago, IL) will 

also compete for time at 125 lb. 

SAINTS WRESTLING 

133 lb: At 133 lb., Matt Bailey 

(Woodruff, SC) was a 3-time region 

champion and North/South All-Star at 

Woodruff High School. He also took 

1 st and 3 rd place finishes in the 

Upperstate Finals. Chris Raynor 

(Riverhead, NY) will also wrestle 

133 1b. Raynor was a 3-time All- 

League selection for Riverhead High 

School. Bailey and Raynor will be 

pushed by South Carolina product 

Rodrickus Rogers (Greer, SC).

141 lb: Patrick Dowd (Lawrenceville, GA) 

and Julian Espinoza (Houston, TX) will handle the 

duties at the 141 lb. class. Dowd was a 2-time area 

champion at Gwinnett High School. Espinoza was a 

JV state champion in his sophomore year at 

Westside High School. 

149 lb: Local product Stephen Lux (Gaffney, 

SC) will wrestle at 149 lb. Lux was a 2-time 

captain for the Gaffney Indians. Joining him at 149 

lb. is James King (Fort Mill, SC), a 3-time State 

Champion in South Carolina, and Zach Gibson 

(Centreville, VA), a Team Virginia selection who 

had over 100 wins at Westfield High School. 

Bobby Jenks (Floyd Knobbs, IN), Dustin Leutz 

(Naples, FL), and Robert Sanfilippo (East 

. Moriches, NY) will also vie for spots at 149 lb. 

157 lb: The 157 lb. weight class is highlighted by Joseph Federspiel (Greenville, SC). 

Federspeil was a region champion and team MVP for Wade Hampton High School. Federspiel will 

be pushed by Matt Maybry (Pacolet, SC) and Greg Satterfield (Williamston, SC). 

165 lb: Sabur Ansari (Bryin, NY) will head up the 165 lb. class. He was an All-Region and 

All-Area selection for Lower Richland High School. Carl Barnes (Shelby, NC), Kevin Cooke 

(Jeffersonville, IN), and Dominic Moore (Summerville, SC) round out the 165 lb. weight class. 

174 lb: At 174 lb., the Saints will be led by a 2-time Virginia State place winner in Joseph 

Shreckhise (Grottoes, VA). Joining Shreckhise at 174 lb. is Brandon Boggan (McAdory, AL) 

who took 3 rd at sectionals and was a state qualifier for McAdory HS. Thomas Darwin (Gaffney, 

SC) and George Tenney (Anderson, SC) will also compete for time at 174 lb. 

184 lb: Kyle Elliot (Drexel, NC) highlights the 184 lb. class. Elliot took state runner-up and 3 rd 

place finishes for Freedom High School. Elliot will have competition at the 184 slot from Raymone 

Gude (Roswell, GA), Antwan McKelvin (Gaffney, SC), and Sean Pfeiffer (Warrington, PA). 

197 lb: At 197 lb. Rob Sater (Perry, OH) will head up a talented group. Sater comes to 

Limestone via Cleveland State University. He was a 3-time sectional champion and was ranked in 

USA Wrestling’s top 30 for three consecutive seasons at Perry High School. Derek Cantwell 

(Florence, SC) and William Moss (Red Bank, SC) 

will fill out the 197 lb. position. 

285 lb: The 285 lb. heavyweight division will 

feature John Richard (Maryester, FL). Richard is 

a former High School All-American who placed 4 th 

in the nation in his senior year. Richard, a senior, 

comes to Limestone from Division I Gardner-Webb 

University where he was a 3-year starter and had 25 

wins in his sophomore season. Joining Richard in 

the heavyweight division are Donald Bluhm 

(Wellford, SC), Chris Grenda (Brick, NJ), Joseph 

Rawlinson (Rock Hill, SC), Brandon Thomas 

(Virginia Beach, VA), and Richard Vickers

Head Coach: Ben Stehura 

Ben Stehura will guide the Limestone Saints Wrestling team in their 

inaugural season. Stehura earned his Bachelor of Science degree 

from Lock Haven University in December 2000. In May of 2003, he 

completed his Master’s Degree in Education at Cleveland State 

University. 

Stehura joins Limestone from nationally ranked Cleveland State 

University. At Cleveland State he served as the Assistant Coach and 

Freestyle and Greco Roman Club Coach (2001-2003). While with 

Cleveland State, Stehura helped guide the team to a second place 

finish in the prestigious Eastern Wrestling League and a top 25 

national ranking (Division I). He also coached ten NCAA Div I 

national qualifiers as well as three freestyle and Greco Roman world 

A three-year starter at 165 lbs. for Lock Haven University, Stehura earned fourth and fifth place 

finishes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament. He also earned a fourth place 

finish in the EWL Conference Tournament, and was a member of the EWL All-Academic Team. 

Assistant Coach: Kevin Vees 

Kevin Vees graduated from Johnson & Wales University (Providence, RI) 

in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management. He competed in 

the 125 lb. weight class and was a three-time New England Wrestling 

College Association (NCAA Division III) runner-up for the Wildcats. 

Vees was also a two-time Academic All-America selection. 

Vees has had previous coaching experience at several camps including the 

Carl Adams Wrestling camp in Boston, MA and the Big Dawg Wrestling 

Camp in Providence, RI. The Doylestown, PA native comes to Limestone 

from Sports International, a Maryland based company, where he has 

served as the Director of Marketing for the last year. 

Team Manager: Renee Harper 

Renee Harper is a freshman from Walhalla, South Carolina. She 

graduated from Walhalla High School. Her brother, John, will compete in 

the 125 lb. weight class. Renee is the daughter of Johnny and Tina Harper.

ATHLETIC TRAINING 


The Limestone Athletic Training Department provides support to all 

seventeen intercollegiate sports at the College and features six certified 

athletic trainers on the staff. 

The Athletic Training Department provides risk management and injury 

prevention, assessment, evaluation, and rehabilitation for all varsity 

athletes at Limestone College. The quality of personnel in the Athletic 

Training department is a major factor in all the success of Limestone’s 

athletic teams. 

Matt Bressler: Interim Head Athletic Trainer 

Matt Bressler received a bachelor of science from Appalachian State University and a master of science 

from the University of Memphis. Bressler serves as Interim Head Athletic Trainer and an approved 

clinical instructor. His sporting responsibilities include men’s and women’s cross county, men’s and 

women’s basketball, swimming, cheerleading, and baseball. Bressler joined the Limestone College 

Athletic Training Staff in August of 2004. 

Vanessa Fulbright: Director of the Athletic Training Education Program 

Vanessa Fulbright received a bachelor of science from Mars Hill College and a master of arts from 

Gardner-Webb University. Fulbright is responsible for the Athletic Training Education Program, and is 

fully involved in the accreditation process for the Limestone College Athletic Training Education 

Program. Her sporting responsibilities include Volleyball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis. Fulbright 

joined the Limestone College Athletic Training Staff in January of 2002. 

Troy Burger: Strength and Conditioning Coach/Athletic Trainer 

Troy Burger received a bachelor of science from Washington State University and a master of science 

from the University of Idaho. Burger serves as an approved clinical instructor for the clinical education 

program at Limestone College, and is the strength and conditioning coach for most sports. Burger 

joined the Limestone College Athletic Training Staff in January of 2003. 

Dawn Ranns: Athletic Trainer 

Dawn Ranns received a bachelor of science degree from Limestone College and a master of science 

degree from Furman University. Ranns is a member of the faculty as an Instructor of Physical 

Education and Athletic Training, and her sporting responsibilities include Women’s Soccer, Women’s 

Softball, and Women’s Lacrosse. Ranns joined the Limestone College Athletic Training Staff in August 

of 2003. 

Gail Pace: Athletic Trainer 

Gail Pace received a bachelor of science degree from Wingate University and a master of science from 

Mississippi State University. Pace serves as an assistant athletic trainer and approved clinical 

instructor. Her sporting responsibilities include men’s soccer, wrestling, softball, and men’s and 

women’s golf. Pace joined the Limestone College Athletic Training Staff in August of 2004.

LIMESTONE FACILITIES 


Limestone Physical Education Center 

Limestone College made a major announcement in the summer of 2004. The College will build a new physical 

education center, expected to be completed early in the spring semester. The new facility will offer three 

classrooms, nine offices, locker rooms, Athletic Training Education facilities, a fitness center, and a wrestling 

practice facility. 

Located on Thompson street near Limestone Springs, the facility will be the first new building on the Limestone 

campus since the Timken Center was dedicated 30 years ago. The Physical Education facility will give Limestone’s 

Athletic Training Education Program the necessary space to meet accreditation standards of the American Medical 

Association’s Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, which will allow Limestone 

students to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Examination. 

In addition to the new Athletic Training facilities, the facility will also house a 3,900 square foot weight training 

facility which will be a great asset for Limestone’s approximately 350 varsity athletes as well as all other students, 

faculty, and staff. Limestone’s wrestling team, which begins competition in the 2004-2005 school year, will have a 

practice area in the new building, although the team will hold its matches in the Timken Center. 

The Timken Center, built in 1976, is the center of the Limestone Athletic Department, housing athletic offices, 

athletic training facilities, and classrooms. The Timken Center also houses Limestone’s basketball arena, a 1,500 seat 

facility that hosts men’s and women’s basketball games as well as volleyball and wrestling matches. Limestone’s 

junior Olympic sized pool is also located inside the Timken Center. Home to the Lady Saints Swimming Team, the 

pool features an 800 square foot observation balcony coupled with 2,500 square feet of deck space.

LIMESTONE FACILITIES 


The recently remodeled Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center is one of 

the top facilities in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. The 

facility includes eight lighted tennis courts and houses tennis offices 

and a club house area for student-athletes. 

Saints Field was given a face-lift this summer. Limestone’s game 

field for men’s and women’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s 

lacrosse was completely resurfaced and a full-size practice field was 

added immediately adjacent to it. In addition, the Saints also enjoy the 

use of three other practice fields. 

Limestone’s athletic facilities also include a baseball and softball field 

complex. Bob Prevatte Field plays home to the baseball team while 

Lady Saints Softball Field hosts Jimmy Martin’s squad.

Curtis Administration Building 

Limestone College was established in 1845 by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son, Dr. 

William Curtis, distinguished scholars born and educated in England. Limestone 

College was the first woman’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the 

United States. 

In the late 1960s, Limestone College became fully coeducational. The campus is a 

unique combination of history and progress, with nine of our campus buildings 

included on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Since 1991, Limestone College has completed 

renovations of several of its historic campus structures: 

the Montgomery Classroom Building, Ebert Residence 

Hall, Carroll Fine Arts Building, Hamrick Hall of 

Science, Eunice Ford Residence Hall, and Dixie Lodge 

Student Center. While the College’s ties to the past are 

visible in the many historic structures, these renovated 

facilities now house the modern technology necessary to 

maintain Limestone’s reputation as an outstanding

Dixie Lodge 

Limestone College is an accredited, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts 

institution chartered by the state of South Carolina. Limestone is a nondenominational 

Christian college. Our programs lead to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor 

of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, or 

Associate of Arts degree. 

Today, Limestone College enrolls 

approximately 600 students in its day 

program and approximately 2,000 in the 

Block Program (located at various sites 

throughout South Carolina) and Virtual 

Campus Program (Internet Courses) 

combined.
