Next year, they will be celebrating their 40 th Anniversary and, as club committees will

Application for tree display-
Swindon ‘Winter Image’ Show
The Swindon ‘Winter Image’ Show will be here soon, and
arrangements are already being made. The Grange Drive Centre has
been booked for Sunday 24 th February 2013.
In the past Swindon club have invited individual bonsai exhibitors to
display tree/s. As the show has become more popular, we are receiving
many more requests than the space we have available. To allow equal
opportunity for individuals wishing to exhibit, we have decided to throw
it open to everyone and are accepting applications for consideration
starting NOW.
Closing date for applications- 31 st October 2012
Those successful will be notified, but late applications will be
considered for a reserve list.
We require the following details-
Species of tree.
Tree dimensions.
Size of display area requested (3 or 6 feet) depending on size of
tree- back screens 6 feet.
Also a photo of the tree would be beneficial.
The area will be uniformly clothed and have back screens. Trees and
stands with well considered accents, scrolls and accessories are
welcome. It is also necessary to have a name plate with details of the
tree and pot, suitable to be displayed with the exhibit.

Back on the road with
John Hanby.
Although he didn’t start taking bonsai seriously until
about 1990, John Hanby quickly achieved some measure
of notoriety amongst bonsai enthusiasts.
In those early days, he got some top drawer instruction
and encouragement from Harry Tomlinson and Dan
Barton, and then, he took on the UK alternative to the
mighty Ginkgo Awards….what an achievement! We
recently saw a demo by John at Northamptonshire Bonsai
Society, and I have to say you should make a special
effort to see him.
Perfectly relaxed and full of professional wit, this is the

A new book from Bonsai Presentations looking at
Methods of Bonsai Display.
Here at Bonsai Presentations, we recently invited a small
delegation from the distributors at SVP for a progress meeting
on our new publication mentioned earlier this year and have
issued this report for readers of The Bonsai Review.
The marketing team at SVP would like to take this opportunity to
announce a new publication due at the beginning of 2013. ‘Methods of
Bonsai Display’ is a long-awaited book from Paul Goff, whose
contribution to the art of displaying bonsai is recognised worldwide.
Beautifully presented, with high quality photography that we’ve come to
expect, this book is an essential source of inspiration and information for
anyone with even the slightest interest on how to display and enhance
their bonsai to the full potential.
Based on well founded Japanese methods of display, the book
explores how to adopt local traditions, customs using indigenous

It was reported that Steve Tolley judged the New
Talent Competition at the Wirral Bonsai Society Show.
This should have read that Steve judged the trees on
display (Saturday) and the judges for New Talent were
Ian Warhurst and Andy Dolman.
Using The Bonsai Review
The Bonsai Review is available for clubs to
publish regular monthly calendar agendas in
the ‘CLUB ACTIVITIES’ columns, and it’s
FREE. Please be aware that the copy
deadline is the 15 th monthly but there seems
to be some confusion here. The term ‘copy
deadline’ goes back decades to the time of
‘hot metal’ press printing. It means your
copy…..your article….your words…your info,
is required by a certain date to allow
preparation for publication.
For The Bonsai Review, the publication date
is on or around the 20th. It takes up to 4 or 5
days every month to prepare the artwork
ready for the release date, so please do your
best to hit the 15 th deadline. Material received
after that date stands a good chance of not
making it to the finished layout. If you require

Just a small selection of trees photographed
during an evening in Southport. Members’ trees vary
from basic beginner to experienced enthusiasts.
During the early 1970s, The National Bonsai Society was amongst
just a couple of Bonsai and Japan related special interest groups in
the UK. Further interest in the activities of this group in Southport
soon spread like wildfire, and membership numbers rapidly swelled
to at least 2,000, drawing members from across the UK.
What then followed was a ‘big-bang’ scenario of clubs and
societies emerging nation wide. Pete Moth is at the helm these days,
keeping a team together who are determined to show us next year,
what it takes to keep enthusiasts spreading the word of bonsai. We
should all congratulate them and look out for scheduled events next
year celebrating 40 years of The National Bonsai Society.
