This cold austere scene is typical for this time of year. A twin trunk connected root, Scotch elm (Ulmus glabra) at
60cm high is displayed with the pale winter moon. The uncluttered arrangement embodies the stark landscape and
the pot by Ian Baillie hints at the remains of snow.
Many bonsai enthusiasts have had disappointing
results due to excessive rain recently and now snow and
frozen conditions. A good tip for the current weather
situation is to bring the occasional bonsai under shelter if
your trees are not protected. Without employing a heat
source, allow the tree to slowly thaw and raise the pot at
one end on a wood block. If this is done in a deep plastic
tray, you will be surprised at the amount of water that
emerges from the drain holes in the pot, even though it
does not appear when the planting is in its normal
horizontal position.
Basically you give the tree a momentary break from the
extreme conditions, and release pressure from
expanding ice. It doesn’t take long but it is well worth the
effort. Naturally if you have a large collection, a good rota
plan is required.
We all experienced disastrous losses a couple of years
back due to low temperatures, now waterlogged frozen
pots may only compound the situation. Don’t wait for the
disappointment later in the spring, do it now. Even fast
draining soils are tested to the limit with these extremes.

Vere Foster, chairman of the long standing East Midlands
Bonsai Society, sends us this feature with pictures, who
continue to welcome new enthusiasts.
This society was started over 30 years ago by Harry Tomlinson (known to most), the late
Ivy Murray (Mame expert) and a few others who are still actively involved with the club. Our
philosophy has always been to value the trees brought for display by all members,
experienced and beginners. Every month we have a table show and each tree is appraised
by either a visiting speaker or by the members themselves who will point out the attributes
of the bonsai and suggestions for possible future development.
Most meetings are workshop style with members working on trees whilst advice is on
hand from those with experience of developing and training bonsai. We organise a well
supported public exhibition, with the possibility of two shows annually in the future. We are
always pleased to welcome new members, but meanwhile you can find more info, please

A recent communication from Bob Thompson of
Dai-ichi Bonsai
informs us that the Reddich shop at Studley is to close at the end of January.
He says there are still some very good clearance bargains at that site, but
meanwhile he is shipping much of the stock down to Newbury. But that’s
created another problem and there are now over 4,000 pots and he can’t
move for !?!?! pots!! So, for the whole of January-February-March there will be
