An intense evening in Norwich demonstrated that Bonsai
Clubs across the UK generate some unexpected surprises
with quality trees eager to be in the spotlight.
Bonsai Presentations captured the evidence.

Since I first took an interest in creating bonsai way back in 1970, a camera was always
within easy reach….pretty girls one day, then artistic potted trees the next. It’s not
surprising then, that many established names in bonsai at the time soon had me furiously
clicking and snapping away taking pictures for publishers and events. Over that 40 year
period, I’ve photographed thousands and thousands of bonsai, but there are still times
when an enthusiastic group of enthusiasts turns out with a stunning selection of their
precious potted creations for another photo session that occasionally leaves everyone
breathless when the lights get it just spot-on. Look at theses examples from Norfolk
Bonsai Association, who could blame me for enjoying such a privilege whilst having close
intimate contact with bonsai I’d not seen before. Sometimes the girls have to wait!

Bonsai Bash 2011

The weekend of the 3 rd and
4 th September saw Greenwood
Bonsai host their Annual
BONSAI BASH, now in its 3 rd year.
This event is getting bigger, and
better attended each year with
enthusiasts from all over the UK
travelling to Nottingham to take
part. It really was a great weekend.
Held over two days this FREE event continues to be a key date for bonsai in the UK.
With 3-4 hour demonstrations each day by Corin Tomlinson being sure to entertain and
educate all levels of bonsai hobbyists.
With thousands of bonsai in stock to browse around, demonstration all day on both days,
a bonsai exhibit of some of Corin’s own collection, plenty of fellow enthusiasts to talk bonsai
with and the ever popular barbeque, many visitors returned on the second day to fit it all in.
This year Corin worked on two trees over the weekend. A large Tanuki juniper on the
Saturday and a c0llected Hawthorn on the Sunday. The highlight of the Bash on the
Saturday was the demonstration on the Tanuki juniper, which had already been in progress
for three years but was ready for major styling. Watching it take shape over the course of
the day as Corin spent hours and hours trimming, wiring and carving was fascinating.
On the Sunday Corin tackled a quite unusually shaped collected Hawthorn. The tree
presented many styling options and it was enlightening and informative to have Corin take
the time to explain all the possibilities at every stage before he did the work.
Next years Bash, Greenwood Bonsai Studios 4 th Annual Bonsai Bash is the 8 th -9 th
September 2012. Put the date in your diary, especially if you missed this year’s event. Then
you have no excuse to miss out next year.
Next month’s Bonsai Review will include a ‘before and after’ article featuring the Tanuki
juniper styled during the event- so don’t miss it!
