Scots Pine Steals the Show.
At the 2013 Northamptonshire Bonsai Society Annual Show our Chairman, Jim Walsh won
the award for the ‘Best Tree of an Indigenous British Species’ and also ‘Best in Show’ with
his stately Scots pine. First place was tied, but the presentation of the pine in tokonoma
setting made the difference. The flowering daisy accent suggested that this mountain tree
was in a summer setting whilst a dragonfly on the scroll invoked thoughts of a cool
mountain pool close by. With fifteen trees on ten tables there was space to show each to
its best advantage.
As usual there was a fair amount of interest from the public and we were able to inform
and advise our visitors on the art of bonsai which all serves to generate additional interest
in the subject. One eye-catching tree that was a particular favourite with the public was a
large Pyracantha in early bloom. This was a very striking specimen and, due to the late
season this year, at its best for our show.

Familiar sound of summer
Even after flowering, dwarf Rhododendron varieties
are good subjects for display- example above.
Bright shiny foliage portrays health and vitality on
well cared for examples. Deep pots and plenty of
moisture will prove beneficial. Here, at the height of
summer, a pair of rapidly diving swallows completes
the scene in a vast cloudless sky. A ‘closed’
arrangement such as this (when only two items face
one-another), works well in a small space.
