Display for St David’s Day
Acknowledging Bonsai in Wales
Photographs by Paul Goff
This tokonoma display was created
on March 1 st at Bonsai Presentations to
acknowledge all our Welsh friends in the
world of bonsai, for St David’s Day.
This common Hawthorn (63 cm high, pot by
Ian Baillie) is quite typical of what you might
see in the landscape of South Wales and is
often used by bonsai enthusiasts from the
region. Here, the buds are swelling and about
to burst into leaf….spring is here!
The arrangement which expresses a note of
formality because of this auspicious day, has
the scroll placed perfectly central, and
features daffodil flowers, a traditional
emblem for Wales.
The accessory is an antique brass bell
figurine of a Welsh Lady in 19 th century
traditional rural costume.
Introducing
WABI SHACK from
Perfect architectural accompaniments for display with bonsai, suiseki and
shohin compositions. Whether your ideal retreat is a mountain hut, fishing
shack, tea house or a hermit’s shelter, Wabi Shack are ideal accessory items
to enhance the sentiment of beautiful isolation.
Wabi and Sabi are often considered essential for authentic Japanese display,
especially when melancholy and simplicity is a high priority.
“Although both saint and sage may welcome a
hut for shelter, neither will accept anything less
than universal consciousness” (Christmas Humphreys)
BEST OF BRITISH BONSAI 2013
Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Steve Tolley is actively selecting
trees for this event. If you have
trees suitable for consideration
please contact him atsteven.tolley1@virgin.net
Here at Bonsai Presentations, we’ve identified a limited source of bronze effect,
non-metal structures ideal for the display artist. The average size of the items
shown above is 45mm high and we can confirm that each one is hand made from
modern composite materials, therefore no two can be identical.
We will be showing these little gems at the Magical Bonsai Accents event at
Failand Village Hall on Sunday 27 th May in addition to some new and very exciting
kakemono style hanging scrolls. More info on WABI SHACK- 01788 510442
Chris Fowler of Northamptonshire Bonsai Society has come to the conclusion that he has too many trees to cope with, and so he’s making a selection
available for novice enthusiasts to help them get a head start in bonsai. Chris has given many years to bonsai and has gained enough experience to
establish quite a tidy collection. The pictures below show just a sample of what he has for sale.
We had some stunning weather at the beginning
of March here in central UK, at which time the
obligatory inspirational woodland walk was high on the
agenda. Not only did the idea for the St David’s Day
arrangement come wafting through the spring air, but after a brief
mind clearing exercise, this spring haiku leapt forth perfectly
expressing the moment-
Birdsong melodic
hide and seek squirrels,
catkins- the blossom once more Paul Goff 2012
So then immediately after St David had been
resolved, I made another display with
flowering cherry and WABI SHACK tea house…
……nirvana!
