In 1969, Mattel began grouping Hot Wheels cars into various series. There were five series listed in
the 1969 Hot Wheels catalog: Grand Prix Cars, Show & Go Cars, European Models, California Customs,
and Custom Classics. Of these, only the Grand Prix Series cars were issued on a separate blister card.
There were eight new cars and one model from 1968 (the Ford J-Car) that made up the nine cars
available in the Grand Prix Series in 1969. They were issued on a new, green blister card that was similar
in design to the standard Hot Wheels blister. Each card pictured a drawing of the Brabham Repco Fl
beneath the Hot Wheels logo.
Models in the Hot Wheels Grand Prix Series were based on cars from several different kinds of racing.
There were cars from the Le Mans circuit (Ford Mk IV), the Can-Am series (McLaren M6A), Indy
(Indy Eagle, Lotus Turbine), as well as Formula 1 (Brabham-Repco Fl).
In 1970, Mattel would continue to issue the nine Grand Prix Series models introduced in 1968 and
1969, as well as two new ones. In 1971, all eleven cars were still available in the series although no new
models were added. The series and all eleven castings were discontinued at the end of 1971.
Since the Ford J-Car was introduced in 1968, we decided to include it in the chapter for that year
as it was one of the original 16 cars issued. You can find the Ford J-Car described on page 41.

This model is based on the 1967 Brabham
BT24 Formula One race car driven by
Jack Brabham. It has a rear-mounted
engine with long plastic tail pipes. This
model also comes with a decal sheet. The
decals include a round "1" for each side
and a white stripe with round "1" for the
nose, as well as sponsors' emblems.
This model was made only in Hong Kong. It has a blue tint
windshield and is typically seen with a black interior. Examples
with a white interior are more rare. (Red is most common - all
other colors, 400% of mint.) To date, no examples with tan
interiors have been found. Some models are also found with
a black painted base (150% of mint).

Hall, was the basis for this model. It
features a white plastic, removable
wing and a rear-opening engine
cover. All Chaparrals come with a
decal sheet with racing numbers "66."
The interior color is typically black.
United States models will have black interiors and
clear windshields. Some U.S. issues have been seen
with brown interiors (200% of mint).
All Hong Kong models have black interiors and
blue tint windshields.

racing number stickers with a black " 1"
(U.S.) or "5" (H.K.) and black and white stripes
for the hood, roof, and trunk. This model also
features a rear-opening engine cover that
reveals a detailed engine compartment.
This model was made in Hong Kong and the United
States. The Hong Kong version has recessed or raised body
detail lines and blue tint windows. The United States version
has recessed body detail lines and clear windows.

Mattel based this model on the 1967
Eagle-Westlake Indy Car driven by Jochen
Rindt. It features an exposed engine and
chrome tail pipes in the rear that are
joined to form a spoiler. This model also
comes with oval decals with "48" in black,
as well as white stripes and sponsors'
emblems.
This model was made only in Hong Kong. It has a blue
tint windshield and is typically seen with a black interior.
Examples with a tan interior are less common (200% of mint),
while examples with a white interior are more rare (red is
most common - all other colors, 400% of mint). Some models
are also found with a flat black or glossy black painted base
(150% of mint). A few models have silver bases, and are hard
to find (300% of mint). The gold base is used only on the gold
chrome variation.

This model was based on the 1968 Lola T70 race car. It features a rear-opening
engine cover with detailed engine compartment. The car came with yellow circular
stickers with "10" in black and matching yellow stripes for the collector to
apply. This is one of several models that may be found with the engine compartment
taped shut as the rear-opening engine cover models tended to flip open
when the cars were being raced on Hot Wheels track. It was issued through 1971.
The Hong Kong version has blue tint windows, large taillights, and recessed body
outlines (except dark green enamel, which has raised or recessed lines). The United
States version has clear windows, small taillights, and recessed body outlines.

Mattel based this Grand Prix series car
on the 1968 Lotus 56 race car referred to as
the "Whooshmobile" because of the sound
its engine made. It was driven by Graham
Hill. This model also comes with a decal
sheet that has black block racing numbers
("70") and assorted sponsors emblems.
This model was made only in Hong Kong. It has a blue
tint windshield and is typically seen with a black interior.
Examples with a tan interior are less common (150% of mint),
while examples with a white interior are more rare (1,000% of
mint). Some models are also found with a black painted
base (150% of mint).

was part of the line through 1971.

on the fenders, clear, deep detailed body outlines,
and a vent on the spoiler. The interior is typically
black, although some United States examples have
been found with tan interiors and are considered
rare (200% of mint).
Hong Kong versions have blue tint windows, no
vents on the fenders, poorly detailed body lines, and
no vent on the spoiler.

race car of the same name. This
model features a rear-opening engine
compartment.
United States versions feature a
clear window, black interior, flat black
paint on the rear panel, and vents
with grid lines. The United States versions come with a
sticker sheet. There are racing numbers for the doors,
hood, and rear hatch ("60"), and white Ferrari logos for
each side of the rear hatch (should be placed in front
of tires).
Hong Kong versions feature blue tint windows, glossy
black paint on the rear panel, and vents without grid
lines. Interiors are black, except for a rare red Spectraflame
variation which has a white interior. The Hong
Kong versions did not come with a sticker sheet. These
models have the stickers pre-applied. There are racing
numbers on the doors and rear hatch ("60"), and a yellow
Ferrari logo on the hood.

only model in the Grand Prix series that

This model also comes with a sticker

and rocker panel strips.
The United States version features clear windows,
black flat paint on the rear panel, and a white interior.
The casting also has small headlights and small exhaust
pipes.
The Hong Kong version features blue tint windows,
black glossy paint on the rear panel, and a black interior.
The casting also has large headlights and large exhaust
pipes.
