Center Highlights 2010 Flag Raising
Metedeconk River Yacht Club’s annual Flag Raising took place on Saturday, May 1. In addition to the official
commissioning of the Club for 2010, the day was highlighted by the opening of the long awaited junior
sailing center. In an emotional ceremony, the structure was officially dedicated the Andrew Brennan Junior
Center. Pictured in upper left, are Andrew’s sister, Kaylene, and parents Lisa and Don Brennan, who cut the
ribbon to officially open the center named in memory of their late son. Pictured at lower left are the 2010 officers,

Commodore’s Corner

As you read this issue of Smoke
Signals, you will notice some changes.
Besides the layout changes that we hope
will make the issue easier to read and
more enjoyable, you will also note the
lack of officer reports starting with this
issue. Let me explain the thinking of the
executive committee and the reason for
the change. As all members know, the
advent of the blast email system has allowed
us to keep the membership informed
of information relating to the Club
and Club activity almost on an instantaneous
basis. Rather than just have officers
write an article on something that we already
know or have been through already,
it seems better simply to have a
“Commodore’s Corner” article each
month in Smoke Signals. This article will
encompass all the information that the
Commodore, along with the other officers,
need to pass on to the Club. Eliminating
the specific officer reports will not
exclude the officers from their responsibility
to keep the membership updated
and up to speed on information that is
needed. It simply may come in another
form, i.e. blast emails or information provided
in the Commodore article. In addition,
if a respective officer needs to use a
stand alone column for any specific
month or months, they are always welcome
to use Smoke Signals as the venue.
As we get into June, our attention
turns to the two months of summer
that define the Yacht Club season- July
and August. Schools are coming to an
end and the Junior Program will start up
later this month. All looks to be in place
for another wonderful season. On the social
calendar we have our annual Commodore’s
Cocktail Party June 12. This is
where we honor all our Past Commodores
as well as introduce our new members.
It’s fun night and if you have never been
to this event, it’s definitely one of the
best parties of the year. On Father’s Day
the Mermates put on a fabulous spread
with the always well-attended Father’s
Day Brunch on June 20. Bring Dad to the
Club and enjoy a special cooked meal.
Seating is limited so it’s important to
book early. Right around the corner will
be the Fourth of July Picnic which is always
a fun day for all.
Traditionally the juniors
and their parents
sponsor this picnic and
volunteers are always
needed. Look for the sign up board and
add your name.
Racing is underway and the
Thursday night Cat Boat series starts
June 10. The traditional BBYRA Saturday
racing kicks off on June 26 as we
co-host with Bay Head Yacht Club. The
ten week series culminates in the always
well supported Seaside Park finale on
Labor Day weekend. Our Spring Series
comes to a conclusion June 13 and the
Summer Series starts up June 27.
As mentioned earlier in the
year, the Club now has an active video
surveillance system installed on the Club
grounds. There are roughly 11 cameras
that work on a continuous loop to monitor
activity at the Club. We hope to
never have to “go to the video tape” to
follow up on suspicious activity, theft or
vandalism, but it is there if we need to
investigate. In addition, we have added a
wireless router to the main Club so if
you need to get online while at the Club
you may do so. The router is password
protected but all members are welcome
to access it using the password
“metedeconk”. It is case sensitive and
all letters are lower case.
Drinks are flowing nicely at the
bar under the direction of Rick Haupt
and Brian Schmidt. If there is liquor that
you would like to see stocked at the bar,
talk to Rick or Brian to discuss options.
Rental dates have gone fast this year, but
there are still some dates available. If
you are considering holding a function at
the Club, please contact the rental chairperson
Colette Commisso for more information.
Friday Night Dinners have been a
great success so far this year and if you
are interested in hosting a dinner at the
Club, Terri Gelenitis can help you with
possible dates. Elsewhere in this issue of
Smoke Signals is a calendar of available
dates still open. Looking ahead, next year
is our 75 th anniversary as a Yacht Club.
An anniversary committee has already
been formed to organize festivities for
next year which will include an anniversary
ball. We’ve commissioned a special
75 th anniversary burgee that is hanging
upstairs and will be available for sale
along with other 75 th merchandise. We
will also be hosting the annual BBYRA
Commodore’s Ball next year as part of
the 75 th anniversary celebration. Simply
put- next year will be big!
Lastly, Club packets were officially
handed out to attendees at the Flag
Raising ceremony in May. So far not all
members have picked up their packet.
Remember, there is some valuable information
located inside the packet including
the Social Chits that can be redeemed at
numerous Club events along with the
2010 Club Directory which is jam packed
with really great photos from throughout
the year. The packets can be picked up
during Club events when an officer or
chairperson is on site and able to get into
the Club office.

PHRF – After two races, seventeen
boats have made it to the starting line
for the PHRF Spring Series. In the largest
fleet, C Division, Jon Ballis’ Star Dust
sits in first place with scores of 1-2, just
ahead Bill Bogardus’ Aurora (4 points)
and Gary Puco’s Phoenix (5 points).
Dave Alldian’s Cymothoe leads B Division
only one point ahead of Joshua
Beye’s The Dig and two points in front
of Jack Woods’ Spry. Art Topilow and
Jarrett Lynn’s J/24s share the lead in A
Division and Mitch Hnatt’s Melges 24

first races of the season. In the morning
classes, the Sandpipers will compete for
the Piper Mug and the newly rededicated
Papp Trophy. The Laser Radial class will
sail for the Dimon Trophy and the Sneakboxes
the Orchard Trophy. Also to be
awarded is Metedeconk’s Senior M-Scow
Trophy. In the afternoon, the A Cats will
compete for the Hartranft Trophy and the
Van Horn Trophy will be awarded in the
Sanderling class. The E-Scows will sail
for the Chip Small Trophy. Two trophies,
the Barnegat Cup and Kalning Trophy
will be handed out in the Lightning fleet.
Almost every class (with the notable exception
of the Sanderlings) will be sailing
double races. The races move down bay
July 3 with Island Heights YC running the
show.
Tune Up Regatta – The 2010
Tune Up Regatta for Sandpipers, Sanderlings
and Lightnings will be hosted
by the Bay Head YC on Saturday, June
19. Registration will be open from 8:30
to 9:30 am on Bay Head’s front deck
with a Skippers Meeting at 9:30 am.
The Warning Signal will be at 10:30 am
followed by three races on the river.
There will be lunch break at Metedeconk
and trophies will be awarded back at Bay
Head after the final races. Registration
is $25 per boat with individual lunches
available for $7.00.
Wanamaker Weekend – The
Island Heights YC will hold their 2010
Wanamaker Weekend Saturday, June 19.
A Cats, E-Scows, M-Scows, Ensigns and
Flying Scotts are scheduled to sail three
races on the Toms River followed by
awards, dinner and a live band at the
host club. On line registration is open on
the club’s website. Pre-registration entry
fees range from $80 for A Cats to $35 for
M-Scows. Dinner tickets are available at
$25 per head.
Fourth of July River Race –
Sail boats of all shapes, sizes and rigs are
invited to compete in the Fourth of July
River Race Sunday, July 4 at the Club.
The fleet will start together and sail the
same course up and back down the Metedeconk
River using the Club’s permanent
barrels as marks. Scoring will be
based upon the Portsmouth Yardstick, the
same handicap system used for the Herring
Island Race. There will be awards
for the top three finishers, the top Sandpiper
and Sanderling and a mid-fleet trophy.
The Warning Signal for the race is at
10:00 am and the Junior Picnic follows
the race at noon.

WOME’S WET WDESDAY (WWW) TO BEGI
Make sure to save the dates below
so that you don’t miss the fun of Women’s
Wet Wednesdays (WWW)! WWW is an
evening of sailing for the women of the
club. Whether you are an experienced
sailor or someone who simply wants to
learn to sail, you are sure to learn some
new skills, make new friends and to have a
lot of fun on the water and at the casual
dinner that follows. All that you need to
do is bring yourself and, if you have one,
your Sunfish or other boat! No boat or no
experience? No problem – we’ll pair you
up with another sailor.
WWW will begin at 6:00 pm June
30 and will run each Wednesday evening
through August. The evening is a combination
of classroom instruction/
discussion and time on the water. We’ll
start out talking about rigging. The
Powder Puff Championship race series
will be held on August 11, 18 and 25
(September 1 is make-up night in case of
bad weather.)

FLEET NEWS
News of the Lightning
Women’s, Juniors, and Masters North
American Championships that will be
held at Metedeconk the week of August 2
can be found on the Club website
www.metedeconkriveryc.org. Click on
the North Americans logo. The NOR was
posted in late March and Committee
Chairmen have been appointed. Members
that are free that week may contact Commodore
Lutz for assignment.
Monday and Tuesday are reserved
for registration and measurement
with the racing taking place on the
Green Island Course Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday.
BBYRA racing starts
June 26. As usual the Club Lightning
schedule has been adjusted
to free up weekends for regattas
and family recreation. The eleven
race series starts at Bay Head June
26 (Barnegat Cup & Kalning Trophy)
moves to Island Heights
(Wright Trophy) on July 3, and
Shore Acres July 24. After the
NA’s the series resumes at Normandy
Beach (Phillips Trophy),
August 14, Lavallette (Marie Slovak
Trophy) August 28, with the
finale at Seaside Park on September
4. All are double race dates
except Seaside where the traditional
party and awards follow a
single race.
Formal Lightning activity
began the last weekend in
Smoke Signals
April with the 49 th sailing of the Long
John regatta out of the Monmouth Boat
Club, Red Bank. Although Fleet 34 had
three boats in the top ten the Navasink
River’s squirrelly winds shut our sailors
out of the top five. The first race was
sailed in a nothing to light northerly and
was won handily by Keith Taboada. After
lunch a brisk southerly arrived on
which two races were sailed. Sunday
dawned horribly with winds gusting in the
twenties and tons of rain. Monmouth’s
Race Committee felt conditions were not
conducive for early season racing and
concluded the regatta counting the three
races sailed Saturday. Allan Terhune,
Annapolis sailmaker, was the winner.
Thanks go to Fleet 34’s Mitch Hnatt,
Brian Taboada, Keith Taboada, Jody
Lutz, Matt Reiser and Timmy Crann for
braving the elements and representing the

Although not a member of
MCYC, Fleet 34 welcomes Matt Reiser,
Lavallette sailor who has joined following
the demise of Lavallette’s Lightning
fleet. For those that are unfamiliar,
Fleet 34 is a chartered fleet
of the International Lightning Class
Association. Fleets consist of three
or more Active Members of the
ILCA and need not be Yacht Club
members, though most are.
Lightnings have completed
six of their nine Club/Fleet
Championship races. With three to
go on May 30, Mitch Hnatt has a
commanding lead even throwing
out firsts. Two boats joined the
competition May 16. George Francis
and Kyle Beebe raced for the
first time and plan to qualify.
The Atlantic Coast Championship
scheduled for Leesylvania
State Park (VA) July 24-25 has
been shifted to Severn Sailing in
Annapolis due to a monster power
boat rally on the Potomac that
weekend. Apparently others have
power boat problems.

held on May 23 and June 6. Special
thanks to all the parents and Club members
who volunteered their time to make it
a great success.

The junior social committee is
currently hard at work planning some
wonderful events for our kids. As soon as
we have the social calendar in place, I

meetings. Remember, you must sign-up
to work two meets per child swimming.

Tip: Fitting Swim Goggles
1. Hold the goggles on your eyes
2. Press the eye cups into your
eye sockets
3. Let go – they should stay in
place
4. If they don’t, they are not a
good fit. Try another style!
The goggle shape should match for a
good fit. You can make adjustments to
the spread of the eyepiece, but if the
goggles don’t hold without the strap, at
least for a few seconds, don’t buy them.

The MRYC Flag Raising Social
last month was especially meaningful as
we celebrate our 45 th Anniversary this
year. To commemorate this milestone,
the Mermate flag was raised on the starboard
spreader by Junior Officer Gillian
Francis, granddaughter of our first Mermate
President, Mrs. Rowena Francis.
Commodore Lutz reminded the membership
of our mission with high accolades as
to the many contributions we have made
to the Club over the years. Joining our
organization is only $10.00 a year, and we
encourage all of our Club members to
help us realize the goal of attaining 100%
membership in this special anniversary
year. The Mermates will have an open
meeting this July to allow all new and
active members to meet the officers and
chairpersons and become more involved.
The fun begins for all members
at the Mermate sponsored Father’s Day
Brunch on Sunday, June 20, 2010. There
are two seating times scheduled this year
due to the popularity of this great occasion-
don’t wait to make your reservation
because when Fran Lynn is involved in
making a function happen, you will find
out that every detail is completed with

We are looking for more recipes
to fill the pages of the Anniversary
Cookbook. The meals you’ve served at
Friday Night Dinners, or WWW, Auxiliary
fleets, Cruiser meals; and the salads
and desserts scooped up at our picnics
and holiday functions should be duly
noted. A hardcover spiral bound prototype
was brought to the last Mermate
meeting, and was met with rave reviews,
promising to be a treasure in everyone’s
cupboard soon. Be sure to pre-order a
copy for every aspiring cook in your
family.
It’s good to see everyone milling
about again, getting boats ready,
attending Friday Night Dinners and sailing
in the series on the river and enjoying

Benefitting the
Sandra M. Glazier Scholarship Fund
Granted annually to an Ocean or Monmouth County, NJ, graduating high school senior with a parent who has
been or is afflicted with cancer, or who is battling cancer him or herself.
The Sandra M. Glazier Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Sandy Glazier.
Sandy was cofounder
of the Cancer Concern Center of Point Pleasant. She was elected to represent women battling cancer
by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and was featured in the 2001 My Hope Calendar. Her leadership
efforts were recognized in May 2000 by Russ Berrie who awarded her the Russ Berrie Prize for Making a
Difference. A vibrant individual with a zest for life, and an inspiration to all, Sandy passed away on October 22,
2001 after seven years of battling metastatic breast cancer.
Family and friends of Sandy have established the Sandra M. Glazier Scholarship Fund at the Princeton Area
Community Foundation to fulfill one of Sandy’s life-long wishes to provide financial assistance for college study to
graduating high school seniors whose parents have been stricken by cancer, or who have been afflicted themselves.
The scholarship is a tribute to Sandy’s life and interests and a reminder not only of her battle against a terrible
disease, but also her successes as a mother, wife and breast cancer advocate.
