Commodore’s Corner
RICK POKORNY
The preparation and planning are
paying off! We are midway through the
Junior Program and things are going well.
I just left a swim meet and this year our
team is doing great! Thanks to our coaches
and volunteers for a job well done!
Our sailors have been on the water every
day and have been making the most of
what our Club offers.
We also experienced another
great Powder Puff regatta. Things got off
to a slow start with light winds, but by the
afternoon, most fleets were able to get
three races in. Vivian Dooren, with the
help of Karen Haupt, Jennifer Alldian and
Mary Ellen Butryn organized a group of
volunteers that put on the biggest and
most successful experience for all of our
young female sailors. This year we had a
special guest, Gary Jobson. He was on
location filming some footage for the upcoming
100 th Anniversary Celebration of
the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association.
It was an exciting day with many
great experiences to be
had both on and off the
water.
August is a busy month
at our Club. Make sure
you check the calendar at the end of this
issue. It will provide you with the many
different events that we have scheduled.
The White Party, Women Raising Sails
for a Cause, and something new called
“Conktails”. Stay tuned to the Commodore
blast for more details.
So far it has been a great summer!
This year I have had the pleasure
of watching my nieces, Shannon and
Heather swim and sail. The topper has
been watching my five-year old son
Richard. He was barely able to swim the
25 yards required to be on the swim
team during his first practice. Now, he
is swimming multiple events in his last
few meets, with his sister, Erica, always
being supportive along the way!

The yacht club has been busy
non-stop now that summer is underway.
The bar has been busy and Friday Night
Dinners have been well-attended. Thank
you to our volunteer chefs who put in
many hours of preparation and hard work
while making it look easy. Thank you to
the following chef teams: Glowacki/
Haupt, who have already prepared two
dinners and Schon/Taboada/Carolan/
Valkenburg. Everyone loves coming to
member-prepared dinners but WE NEED
MORE VOLUNTEER CHEFS and
SERVERS! Please contact Patty Mroczko
to sign up to cook or serve a dinner.
Thank you to Patty who has tirelessly
been working on these weekly events.
Many thanks to Vivian Dooren,
Karen Haupt and their fabulous volunteers
for another successful Powder Puff
regatta. Thank you to all of the members
who donated their time on race committee,
patrolling, parking, cooking, serving,
registering, and who donated gifts for the
coveted raffle prizes. A special thanks
goes to Patty Hunt for donating all of the
lunches for the sailors. Throughout the
day, I heard numerous compliments about
the organization of the event, the beauty
of our Club, and the congeniality of our
members. With the exception of the absence
of morning wind, it was a perfect
day. We look forward to the 30 th next
year!

Metedeconk Opti Advanced Team Captures Merrick Team Race Champonship
with Dramatic Win over Bay Head Yacht Club; Opponents’ Act of
Sportsmanship Aids Team of Fortunato, DeLuca, Boyan and Banias
Congratulations to the Metedeconk Advanced Sailing Team on winning the 2012 Merrick Team Race hosted by the Bay Head Yacht
Club. The winning team was led by Eva Fortunato, Allison DeLuca, Garrett Boyan and Cole Banias. At the end of the regatta,
our sailors finished the event with 8 wins and 1 loss beating BHYC in the Championship Race. Also, representing Metedeconk was
the second team of Courtney Jacobs, Sophie Ruggiero, Julia Ackerman and Megan Gonzalez. Eva Fortunato wrote the following
note to Bay Head Yacht Club on behalf of the Metedeconk team for and an ironic but spectacular display of sportsmanship that
made their victory possible.

Dear Coaches, Parents, Volunteers and fellow Sailors of Bay Head Yacht Club:
Yesterday was a memorable day of sailing at Merricks and what made it so extremely
special was your incredible act of sportsmanship shown when my sail suddenly
broke before the championship race against your own junior team. By scrambling
to see that another sail was rigged and brought out to me, provided by your
club’s junior program so we could finish our last race was truly above and beyond
any wins, points and trophies.
My fellow Metedeconk sailors and I will never forget your act of kindness. Thank
you, and I look forward to seeing you out on the water.

Catboat Fleet News
The Thursday Evening Championship
Series is attracting record turnouts
with 19 Sandpipers and 9 Sanderlings
registered. The weather has been generally
good and with little motorboat traffic
the sailing has been excellent and very
competitive. After five of the scheduled
nine races John & Jackie Cutting and
Pat Dunn have a slim lead in the Sanderling
fleet followed by Len & Vivian
Dooren and Alexis Wintle, and Jim
Ussery and Bob Beebe in 2 nd and 3 rd ,
respectfully. In the Sandpipers, Paul and
Terri Gelenitis, lead with John and
Nancy Schwind, Ted Borowicki and
Kathy Fazio, and Jim Aridas in 2 nd , 3 rd ,
and 4 th , respectfully. With four races remaining,
both series are open for major
changes in position.
The Sunday Championship Series
began on June 24 and will continue
through August 26. Four Sanderlings and
3 Sandpipers are registered. In the Sanderlings,
after 3 races, John and Jackie
Cutting lead Glen Zimmermann by
the smallest of margins. In the Sandpipers
Jim Gelenitis and Sue Rauf lead
Mimi Dimon. With 6 races to go, some
change in position is likely.
Sanderling sailors were first
and third in the River Race held on July
4 in very light winds. Winning was the
team of Georgia, Madeline, Eric, Jackie
and John Cutting with Connor and
Craig Dooren in 3 rd . Commodore
Pokorny and his son Richard were 2 nd
in a catamaran.
MRYC catboat sailors are doing
very well in BBYRA with Bob Reago
& Barry Pearce 3rd and Alan Papp
and crew 5th in the Sanderling fleet and
Paul & Terri Gelenitis 2 nd and Mimi
Dimon & Deb Corriston 4 th in Sandpipers.
Paul and Terri are looking to repeat
as Sandpiper Champions.
The upcoming and very popular
Sanderling Biathlon is scheduled for
Friday, August 24. Defending champions
are the Syn-D-Cat crew of Frank Dockery,
Tom Dunn, and Dennis and Kathleen
Cantoli. It’s a good time to get your
team together and practice a little golf at
Forge Pond. Frank’s team hopes he makes
it back from his hip surgery in time for
the event.
The Sanderling and Sandpiper
mini-series is scheduled to begin at 6:15
P.M. on Thursday, August 9. This is a
four- race series ending on August 30.
Let’s get a good turnout for these races.

The 29th Junior Powder Puff sets
a new record- 263 girls registered and was
a tremendous success!!
Special thanks to all the volunteers
who helped make this very unique
regatta a day the girls won't soon forget!
We wish to especially thank Club member
Lou Mercatanti of Ocean Beach Marine
Centers for being our Premier Sponsor
this year. The beach bags, visors, and
the donation of the iPad for the raffles
made our day perfect! While wind conditions
in the morning proved too light for
sailing, the PRO's managed to get four
races in for the Red, White and Blue Opti
Fleets and three for the Green Opti Fleet,
420, Laser Radial, 4.7 and Sunfish Fleets.
Club Member, Patty Hunt donated
the delicious turkey wraps from Top
Tomato for the sailors and Mary Ellen
Butryn and her crew did wonders in the
galley serving the sailors, race committee,
instructors, patrols, registration committee
and spectators. Starting the evening before
the regatta, Rick Haupt and crew
took care of the parking of the boats, trailers
and the next day the hoists and
launching duties. We couldn't do it without
their help and the help of the 80+
members who work the regatta. It takes a
year to plan this event and we are currently
working on the 30th Anniversary -

METEDECONK SAILORS
DO WELL......
The Best MCYC Sailor this
year is Mercedes Escandon. Mercedes
finished 4th out of the 39 sailors in the
White Fleet. Following Mercedes was
Lindsay DeLuca in 6th and Katie Durrua
in 10th. The Green Fleet (the Beginners)
had 26 sailors with Nicole Sleys coming
in 2nd followed by Lauren Becker 5th,
Sianna Bradley 12th , Sofia Cocuzza
14th and Abigail Kahn in 15th. Blue
Fleet had 76 racers with Eva Fortunato
coming in 9th, Meghan Gonzales 11th,
Courtney Jacobs 13th and Sophie Ruggiero
in 15th . The Red Fleet sailed with
29 racers with Allison Deluca coming in
9th and Julia Ackerman in 13th. The
Sunfish sailors had 9 boats with Shannon
Pokorny finishing 2nd followed by Olivia
Mroczko 3rd and Emme Mroczko in 4th .
There were 24 - 420's sailing this year
with Madeleine Kardek and crew Bryn
Onoshko coming in 8th followed by Emily
and Caroline Gonzalez in 12th. Rachel
Holick came in first place in a fleet of 11
- 4.7s. Congratulations Rachel! The 17
Boat Laser Radial fleet boasted Haley
Kardek in 2nd, followed by her sister Abby
Kardek in 3rd, Gillian Francis in 8th
and Emma Wiley in 9th.
It was a great day both on and
off the water. Gary Jobson, the voice of
sailing, was on hand to witness his first
Powder Puff and wore a Pink shirt for the
occasion. Gary was here to film the Powder
Puff as part of his documentary on the
100 years of the BBYRA. Thank you all
for helping make this regatta so spectacular!

Timmy Crann Finishes Second
at Lightning Youth World
Championship in Finland

CAPTURE LIGHTNING JUNIOR
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP…
On Sunday July 22nd, the Metedeconk Lightning team
of Jonathan Lutz, Jack Ruggiero and Tommy Fortunato
won the 2012 Lightning Junior State Championship,
which was held at Surf City Yacht Club. Sailing against
a solid fleet, that included Metedeconk junior skipper
Chris Schon, Jonathan and team won three of the five
races in route to a three point victory over the second
place boat. This marks the third straight year that a
Metedeconk sailor has brought home the Andrew Brennan
Memorial Trophy as the New Jersey Junior State
Champion, following Timmy Crann in 2010 and Jason
Lutz in 2011. Congratulations to Jonathan, Jack, and
Tommy on great sailing and keeping the title at the
Metedeconk River Yacht Club!
Metedeconk’s own Timmy Crann, along with his crew of
Lauren Jones and Ali Blumenthal narrowly missed winning
the 2012 ILCA Youth World Championship held
July 23-27 in Finland by just .7 points, finishing second
to his close friends from Team Canada, Adam Macdonald,
Sam Jones, and Abby Bennett. Crann and his crew
received much support from the local sailing community,
including donations from many sailing families here at
our own Club and expressed their gratitude to those who
helped make their journey and success possible: “ The
three of us want to reach out to everyone and say thank
you for all your help and support. Without each and everyone
of you who have helped us along the way, this trip
would not have been possible.” Congrats to Timmy, Lauren
and Ali for representing not only for putting the
Metedeconk name on the world stage, but proudly representing
our country as well.

CONSECUTIVE METEDECONK
SAILOR TO WIN THE LIGHTNING
JUNIOR NORTH AMERICAN
CHAMPIONSHIP; SCHON, KARDEK
AND CURTIS FINISH FOURTH
Jonathan Lutz with Reed Baldridge of Houston, TX and Jonathan
Pottharst of New Orleans, LA won the 2012 Lightning
Junior North American Championship, held at the Houston
Yacht Club in Texas. Jonathan and his team dominated the
three days of sailing, winning seven of the eight races in route
to a 10 point win over the second place team. Metdecon’s
own Chris Schon, with his crew of Haley Kardek, also of
Metedeconk, and Kathryn Curtis of Monmouth Boat Club
finished a strong fourth overall. Jonathan continues the winning
streak for Metedeconk junior Lightning sailors, as this is
the third year in a row a MRYC sailor has won this prestigious
event, following Timmy Crann in 2010 and Jason Lutzwith
Jonathan as bowman- in 2011. Congrats to all our
Metedeconk sailors and their crew for representing us well !

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES
With swimming winding down and sailing half way through, our season is shaping up as one to definitely remember.
We had a very successful Powder Puff regatta, fun at Iron Man, the many interclubs, and of course, the Junior Olympics.
Weather held out nicely and wind has been good to us, especially to our beginner sailors. We look forward in August to the No
Tears Regatta, Rookie Regatta, few more interclubs, and our Andrew Brennan Race on Friday August 10.
Our swim team recently meets won two consecutive weeks in a row!!! First, at our home pool, we beat the OCY-Rays.
The following week we competed at Ocean County College and won against Berkeley! Looking forward to our last swim meet
away at Toms River Country Club. Hopefully making it three wins in a row! Good Luck Swim Team!!
Swim Team season came to a close with our Summer Shore League Championships held August 7-8. Look for a recap
of this meet and the entire season in next month’s Smoke Signals.
On Friday August 17, we will all say good-bye at our Annual Junior Awards Ceremony. Hope to see you there!

I do not remember my first days
of sailing. My parents say my sailing
started huddled in the cabin of their 17-
foot boat as they learned how to sail. In
1974, we joined the Metedeconk River
Yacht Club and upgraded to a 27-foot
Newport sailboat. My first sailing memories
are of weekends spent staying on our
boat. Sometimes we would raft up with
other families from the Club or stop for
dinner on the way to Tices Shoal and
would arrive at our anchorage by moonlight.
I started in the junior program in
1980 as an older beginner and wanted to
learn quickly so I could sail with the kids
my own age. I continued sailing in the
junior program throughout high school.
During my last year as a junior at MRYC,
Mrs. Dooren started a small race just for
girls, called the Junior Powder Puff.
While I can’t say I did well in most races,
I did happen to win that first Junior Powder
Puff race. I do not think anyone could
have imagined how popular this little race
would become. I finished up my junior
sailing at MRYC in Mr. Carson’s Lightning
class. Sailing for me wasn’t about
collecting trophies. I just loved to be on
the water with my friends sailing. As a
junior sailor at MRYC, I made many
wonderful friends and developed a love
for sailing.
When I left for college I didn’t
realize I would also be leaving
Metedeconk for several years. Jobs,
school and eventually family all took priority
and my sailing was limited to a few
sailing vacations. As my children grew, I
wanted them to have the opportunity to
learn to sail and hopefully develop a love
for the sport just as I had as a child. I
rejoined MRYC with my own family in
2007.
Since rejoining, MRYC summers
have been a whirlwind of activity. I
help out with the Wednesday race lunches,
and then stay for Women’s Wet
Wednesdays sailing in the evening. I am
a member of the Mermates and ran their
Ship’s Store for the past two years. I
have been helping out with the Jr. Powder
Puff race in various small ways and recently
joined the organizing committee.
It has been wonderful to meet up with old
friends and make many new ones while
helping the Metedeconk River Yacht Club
continue to provide the opportunity to
develop a love for sailing.
