Anyone wishing to comment on the schedule or any aspect of the racing program may contact any member of the Regatta Committee. Commodore Eytel has reappointed the 2008 Committee to serve for 2009. Members are Chairman Jim Carson, Bill Bogardus, Vivian Dooren, Jim Gelenitis, Dave Hanrahan, Sr., Jack Heacock, Kipp Heacock, Fran Lynn, Jarrett Lynn and Dave Ruiter. EW WITER RULES FOR SEASIDE BRIDGE The Coast Guard has proposed that the rules for the Route 37S drawbridge over Barnegat Bay at Seaside Heights be changed so that the draw need not open unless four hours notice is given between December 1 and March 31. Clearance is approximately 30’. Club PHRF – Familiar names once again topped the score sheets as the PHRF Fall Series wrapped up on September 16. Jack Woods’ Spry finished first in the eight boat B Division, winning four of the six races sailed. Rick Eytel’s Big Grin took second just ahead of Dave Alldian’s Cymathoe, which took third. Jarrett Lynn’s J/24 won the last three races of the series to jump ahead of Mike Tufariello’s J/24 to take the championship in the six boat A Division. Pedro Escandon’s J/24 finished third. Fritz Baier’s Ali-Cat convincingly won C Division three points ahead of Bill Bogardus’ Aurora and four points ahead of Mike Borga’s Defiant. Mitch Hnatt’s Melges 24 handily beat Rick Pokorny’s and Dave Magliaro’s boats for the first place trophy in the Sport Boat Division. Down Bay Invitational – The largest fleet in several years competed in the 2008 running of Metedeconk’s Down Bay Invitational. Fair weather permitted the event to be held on the traditional course in the lower reaches of Barnegat Bay just west of Tices Shoal. Filling out the fleet was a contingent of PHRF sailors and boats from Tall Oaks Yacht Club sailing out of Forked River. Eric Wagner’s Celestine took line honors and finished 14 minutes ahead of its nearest competitor on corrected time to win the event. Don Brennan’s Spirit finished second. Tall Oak’s John Kudera, sailing Fifty-Fifty, came in third. J/24s – Metedeconk hosted the final regatta of the J/24 Class’ Parkway Series on October 4 and 5. Held on the Metedeconk River in light and variable winds, the annual regatta tested the nerve and skills of the five teams competing. Stuart Challoner found the conditions to his liking, winning five of the six races sailed and taking first place overall. Jarrett Lynn, MRYC’s only other entry, finished in second just ahead of Dan Busch and crew in third place. Forty-eight boats competed in the 2008 East Coast Championship sailed in Annapolis October 23 through 26. Conditions ranged from the usual Chesapeake drifter to a frigid 30+ knot screamer that limited Saturday’s sailing to a single race. When the spray settled, Will Welles took first place by 14 points after five races in the talent-laden fleet. Jarrett Lynn was MRYC’s only entry at the event. (Continued on page 5)
Volume 28, Issue 9 SAILIG EWS (Continued from page 4) Ladies Powder Puff – Colleen Kelly was awarded the Tea Pot and a first place trophy for her A Division win in the 2008 Ladies Powder Puff Championship sailed in Sunfishes. Second overall was Patti Mroczko and in third, Eleanor Kinzel. Fourth place went to Sandra Hollick. BBYRA – Planning has already started for the upcoming 2009 BBYRA Championship Series. Delegates and regatta representatives from all 14 member Smoke Signals clubs have been meeting to plan next year’s racing season. No major scheduling changes are in the offing but a proposal has been floated to include a second afternoon race course. In terms of membership, any club that successfully signs up 90% or more of its members as contributing BBYRA members will have the club’s Membership Dues reduced from $200 to only $25 and all such club members will be deemed Contributing BBYRA Members eligible to participate in BBYRA events. Pumpkin Race – Thirteen teams braved the October chill to compete in the 2008 running of MRYC’s Pumpkin Race on October 12. With a second-place finish in the race and 45 pumpkin points, Kristen Gelenitis and Gillian Francis sailing a Lightning won the fall classic with a combined score of 105 points. Rick and Richard Pokorny finished second with 95 points beating out Mitchell and Luke Hnatt, with some assistance from dad in the Lightning, on the tiebreaker despite their first place finish in the race. Jim Gelenitis Page 5 Thirty two Lightnings competed in the 2008 Frigid Digit Regatta hosted by the Severn Sailing Association on October 18th - 19th.
