Page 2 Smoke Signals Volume 28, Issue 9 Vice Commodore Report As this is my first article as Vice Commodore, I’m still in the process of getting my feet wet with on the job training. My thanks go out to my predecessor, Rick Eytel, for his organized transition and help in my new position. As we get further into the year I’ll be better able to give you a feel for what is in store for the 2009 season as it relates to the Junior sailing, swimming and social programs. We have our committee heads in place and are trying to build upon past success. As JODY LUTZ of this writing we are in the process of hiring instructors and coaches for both the sail and swim program. My thanks go out to Daile and George for leaving the program in good shape and helping with the transition. There are many behind the scenes work going on just to make next season come off. It is truly mind boggling the amount of work the officers, chair people and volunteers of this club put in for the general good of the club. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: prior to becoming involved I never gave it much thought as to the work that went on to make this club run day to day. Hopefully in my years of being on the executive committee I’ve “given a little” back to the club that gave me so much growing up in the sailing environment. I’m looking forward to this year as Vice Commodore and if you would like to get involved or have any ideas, feel free to let me know. Have a nice Holiday season. Volume 28, Issue 9 Smoke Signals Page 3 Rear Commodore’s Comments I would like to thank all of you who supported the Slate of Officers that were nominated by the Board of Trustees. You can be confident that all of us are going to do our best to make this coming year one of the best at Metedeconk River Yacht Club. My position as Fleet Captain is demanding with all of our water based activities throughout the year. I am looking forward to all the help and support that you the members have provided in the past. Even though winter is a “quiet season” there are a lot of things that are going on at the club. Winter storage of boats has begun and I am sure that all of you who store boats at the club have filled out the proper paperwork and made the notifications that are necessary. As in the past, it is important that all boats are placed in the most southernmost part of the parking lot leaving spaces open for JANICE BAIER As Rear Commodore, I would like to thank the MRYC members that have supported me in the past and hope the membership supports me in the future. The Rear Commodore’s responsibilities include maintaining the building, docks, grounds and the pool, I am also responsible for all equipment, galley supply purchases and appliances on the property. I would like to thank the following members who have accepted important volunteer positions for 2009: Pool Chair – Pete Zanowic Galley Chair – Fran Lynn Property Chair – Whiting Stulz The latest news is that the club has two AED’s which stands for Automated External Defibrillator. The club will host a night in the future, to demonstrate the proper operation of the AED . FROM THE TOP OF THE MAST A NOTE FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN : RICK POKORNY One AED will be placed on a wall mount in the clubhouse . The other AED will be placed on a wall mount at the pool house, once the pool is open in June. The club will be closed January 11, 2009 through the end of February 2009 for renovation. Whiting Stulz has a contractor coming in to refinish the ballroom floors for our 2009 season! Please send an e-mail if you have a suggestion, or complaint to cjanbaier@msn.com. Yours in service, Janice Baier Rear Commodore vehicle parking. All boats must be identified by a vessel sticker which has your club identification number on it. If you need one of these for your vessel I can b e r e a c h e d b y m y e m a i l rich2724@aol.com. Your vessel should be secured properly in preparation for those periods when the weather may not be the best. All vessels must be removed by April 1 st . When you pass by the club this winter take a drive through the parking lot and take a look at things. Not only will this help with making sure are vessels are safe it can provide a certain sense of security. I would also like to mention that there is an ongoing list posted in the clubhouse regarding wet slip assignments and waiting lists. If you have any interest in moving your slip or acquiring a new slip please contact me via email and your name will be added to the appropriate list. As in the past, a $50 deposit is required to add you name to the waiting list for a slip. I am hoping that we will have plenty of volunteers for our racing patrols. If anyone would like to help me coordinate this huge effort, it would be appreciated. I have found that patrolling is a great way to learn about racing and also a perfect way to make new friends at our club. Our newly formed Boat Committee has been a great help with the constant maintenance that our fleet of 10 club boats require. Our Junior Program has grown very quickly. The amount of young sailors in this program requires numerous boats for our instructors. The boat committee helps keep our fleet afloat.
