Commodore’s Log
RICHARD (RICK) EYTEL
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank our past Commodore, Eric
Wagner. Eric put in many years of service,
culminating in a fantastic year as
Commodore. He is a tough act to follow,
and I hope to have as successful a year. I
would also like to thank all of the past
Commodores in the Club. You are the
real reason why I undertook this odyssey.
Now it’s my turn to return the favor.
Only past Commodores will understand
that statement.
Our club is based on volunteerism.
Volunteering does two things. The
obvious one is that it keeps our dues
structure as low as possible. In these
tough economic times, that is a priority
for all. More importantly, volunteering
gives you a stake in the club beyond the
financial. You become part of the club,
instead of just a member. There are many
ways to volunteer: committee involvement,
Friday Night Dinners, race committee,
patrols, and many others. I invite all
to participate on any level. You will find
it rewarding, and yes, you will even have
some fun.
Thank you Kathie Fazio for a
great Windjammers. Our members had a
great time at all the social events you put
together this past year.
I would like to
introduce to you our
Members at Large:
Keith Banias, George
Mroczko, and Rob Ruggiero. The Members
at Large are your representatives. If
issues arise during the year, I suggest
they be your first avenues of contact.
They will save you time, and be sure
your issue is addressed.
We are already planning next
year. Your Commodore is not sleeping
well these days. I have dreams about
next years Windjammers. The Vice
Commodore is trying to figure out where
to start, and he is beginning to question
what the heck he got himself into. The
Rear Commodore is planning club improvement
and maintenance projects,
and trying to figure Al out. The Fleet
Captain is evaluating winter storage
needs and hoping Jim Carson will not
ask him about patrols until the spring.
The Treasurer is trying to figure out
what the heck last year’s treasurer did,
and at the same time trying to navigate
Quick Books. The Secretary can’t believe
she agreed to put the directory together
again. Finally, our Mermate
President is also trying to figure out how
she got talked into doing this one more
year. Somehow, it all works out.
If you have any suggestions for
any aspect of the Club, now is the time
to voice them, not in the middle of the
season. Please contact the appropriate
officer or committee and express your
concerns.
I am extremely pleased the club
approved the Junior Sailing Center. I
pledge the cooperation of the Executive
Committee, and I will do what I can as
Commodore to make this happen. Join
me in thanking the Brennan family for
their devotion to the project in memory of
their son, Andrew. It will be an asset to
the Club for years. Thank you.
Finally, what are my goals as
Commodore? There are two. First, I
want everyone to have fun. I want our
Executive Committee, BOT, sailors, our
many volunteers, the Juniors, and of
course our entire membership to have a
blast in 2009. After all, that’s what it is
all about isn’t it? Second, I want to fit
back into my Commodore’s jacket by
Flag Raising. I tried for Windjammers,
but I missed the deadline. Twenty more
pounds should do it. Those are my two
goals. I’m confident about the first onenot
to sure about the second one.
I hope to see you all at the Trim-
A-Tree party on December 5. It is a great
event for the kids and adults. I wish you
all a wonderful Holiday Season, Merry
Christmas.
Vice Commodore Report
As this is my first article as Vice
Commodore, I’m still in the process of
getting my feet wet with on the job training.
My thanks go out to my predecessor,
Rick Eytel, for his organized transition
and help in my new position. As we get
further into the year I’ll be better able to
give you a feel for what is in store for the
2009 season as it relates to the Junior sailing,
swimming and social programs. We
have our committee heads in place and
are trying to build upon past success. As
JODY LUTZ
of this writing we are in the process of
hiring instructors and coaches for both
the sail and swim program. My thanks
go out to Daile and George for leaving
the program in good shape and helping
with the transition. There are many behind
the scenes work going on just to
make next season come off. It is truly
mind boggling the amount of work the
officers, chair people and volunteers of
this club put in for the general good of
the club. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it
again: prior to becoming involved I never
gave it much thought as to the work that
went on to make this club run day to day.
Hopefully in my years of being on the
executive committee I’ve “given a little”
back to the club that gave me so much
growing up in the sailing environment.
I’m looking forward to this year as Vice
Commodore and if you would like to get
involved or have any ideas, feel free to let
me know.
Have a nice Holiday season.
Rear Commodore’s Comments
I would like to thank all of you
who supported the Slate of Officers that
were nominated by the Board of Trustees.
You can be confident that all of us are
going to do our best to make this coming
year one of the best at Metedeconk River
Yacht Club. My position as Fleet Captain
is demanding with all of our water based
activities throughout the year. I am looking
forward to all the help and support
that you the members have provided in
the past.
Even though winter is a “quiet
season” there are a lot of things that are
going on at the club. Winter storage of
boats has begun and I am sure that all of
you who store boats at the club have filled
out the proper paperwork and made the
notifications that are necessary. As in the
past, it is important that all boats are
placed in the most southernmost part of
the parking lot leaving spaces open for
JANICE BAIER
As Rear Commodore, I would
like to thank the MRYC members that
have supported me in the past and hope
the membership supports me in the future.
The Rear Commodore’s responsibilities
include maintaining the building, docks,
grounds and the pool, I am also responsible
for all equipment, galley supply purchases
and appliances on the property. I
would like to thank the following members
who have accepted important volunteer
positions for 2009:
Pool Chair – Pete Zanowic
Galley Chair – Fran Lynn
Property Chair – Whiting Stulz
The latest news is that the club
has two AED’s which stands for Automated
External Defibrillator. The club
will host a night in the future, to demonstrate
the proper operation of the AED .
FROM THE TOP OF THE MAST
A NOTE FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN :
RICK POKORNY
One AED will be placed on a wall mount
in the clubhouse . The other AED will be
placed on a wall mount at the pool house,
once the pool is open in June.
The club will be closed January
11, 2009 through the end of February
2009 for renovation. Whiting Stulz has a
contractor coming in to refinish the ballroom
floors for our 2009 season!
Please send an e-mail if you
have a suggestion, or complaint to cjanbaier@msn.com.
vehicle parking. All boats must be identified
by a vessel sticker which has your
club identification number on it. If you
need one of these for your vessel I can
b e r e a c h e d b y m y e m a i l
rich2724@aol.com. Your vessel should
be secured properly in preparation for
those periods when the weather may not
be the best. All vessels must be removed
by April 1 st . When you pass by the club
this winter take a drive through the parking
lot and take a look at things. Not
only will this help with making sure are
vessels are safe it can provide a certain
sense of security.
I would also like to mention
that there is an ongoing list posted in the
clubhouse regarding wet slip assignments
and waiting lists. If you have any
interest in moving your slip or acquiring
a new slip please contact me via email
and your name will be added to the appropriate
list. As in the past, a $50 deposit
is required to add you name to the
waiting list for a slip.
I am hoping that we will have
plenty of volunteers for our racing patrols.
If anyone would like to help me coordinate
this huge effort, it would be appreciated.
I have found that patrolling is a
great way to learn about racing and also a
perfect way to make new friends at our
club. Our newly formed Boat Committee
has been a great help with the constant
maintenance that our fleet of 10 club
boats require. Our Junior Program has
grown very quickly. The amount of
young sailors in this program requires
numerous boats for our instructors. The
boat committee helps keep our fleet
afloat. If you are interested in helping
with this, please let me know.
Thank you.
EW WITER RULES FOR SEASIDE BRIDGE
The Coast Guard has proposed that the rules for the Route 37S drawbridge over Barnegat Bay at Seaside
Heights be changed so that the draw need not open unless four hours notice is given between
December 1 and March 31. Clearance is approximately 30’.
Club PHRF – Familiar names
once again topped the score sheets as the
PHRF Fall Series wrapped up on September
16. Jack Woods’ Spry finished first in
the eight boat B Division, winning four of
the six races sailed. Rick Eytel’s Big
Grin took second just ahead of Dave Alldian’s
Cymathoe, which took third.
Jarrett Lynn’s J/24 won the last three
races of the series to jump ahead of Mike
Tufariello’s J/24 to take the championship
in the six boat A Division. Pedro Escandon’s
J/24 finished third. Fritz Baier’s
Ali-Cat convincingly won C Division
three points ahead of Bill Bogardus’
Aurora and four points ahead of Mike
Borga’s Defiant. Mitch Hnatt’s Melges
24 handily beat Rick Pokorny’s and Dave
Magliaro’s boats for the first place trophy
in the Sport Boat Division.
Down Bay Invitational – The
largest fleet in several years competed in
the 2008 running of Metedeconk’s Down
Bay Invitational. Fair weather permitted
the event to be held on the traditional
course in the lower reaches of Barnegat
Bay just west of Tices Shoal. Filling out
the fleet was a contingent of PHRF sailors
and boats from Tall Oaks Yacht Club
sailing out of Forked River. Eric Wagner’s
Celestine took line honors and finished
14 minutes ahead of its nearest
competitor on corrected time to win the
event. Don Brennan’s Spirit finished
second. Tall Oak’s John Kudera, sailing
Fifty-Fifty, came in third.
J/24s – Metedeconk hosted the
final regatta of the J/24 Class’ Parkway
Series on October 4 and 5. Held on the
Metedeconk River in light and variable
winds, the annual regatta tested the nerve
and skills of the five teams competing.
Stuart Challoner found the conditions to
his liking, winning five of the six races
sailed and taking first place overall.
Jarrett Lynn, MRYC’s only other entry,
finished in second just ahead of Dan
Busch and crew in third place.
Forty-eight boats competed in the
2008 East Coast Championship sailed in
Annapolis October 23 through 26. Conditions
ranged from the usual Chesapeake
drifter to a frigid 30+ knot screamer that
limited Saturday’s sailing to a single race.
When the spray settled, Will Welles took
first place by 14 points after five races in
the talent-laden fleet. Jarrett Lynn was
MRYC’s only entry at the event.
started for the upcoming 2009 BBYRA
Championship Series. Delegates and regatta
representatives from all 14 member
Smoke Signals
clubs have been meeting to plan next
year’s racing season. No major scheduling
changes are in the offing but a proposal
has been floated to include a second
afternoon race course. In terms of
membership, any club that successfully
signs up 90% or more of its members as
contributing BBYRA members will have
the club’s Membership Dues reduced
from $200 to only $25 and all such club
members will be deemed Contributing
BBYRA Members eligible to participate
in BBYRA events.
Pumpkin Race – Thirteen teams
braved the October chill to compete in
the 2008 running of MRYC’s Pumpkin
Race on October 12. With a second-place
finish in the race and 45 pumpkin points,
Kristen Gelenitis and Gillian Francis sailing
a Lightning won the fall classic with a
combined score of 105 points. Rick and
Richard Pokorny finished second with 95
points beating out Mitchell and Luke
Hnatt, with some assistance from dad in
the Lightning, on the tiebreaker despite
their first place finish in the race.
LIGHTNING FLEET NEWS
BBYRA - After windy starts at
the Bay Head/Metedeconk and Island
Heights regattas, Shore Acres managed
just one shortened race. The second race
was abandoned before the start as winds
gusted over 25 knots and scattered upside
down E Sloops all over the bay. One disputed
race was completed at Ocean Gate
before high winds and the threat of thunderstorms
caused abandonment before the
start of the second race. Finally, things
settled down for two normal windwardleeward
races at Lavallette, and a single
barrel course race at Seaside that decided
second place. Mitch Hnatt is the repeat
champion with Jim Carson wresting second
from Bill Bogardus on the last day.
Bay results can be found on the BBYRA
website, www.bbyra.org.
Riverton Yacht Club managed
four races before Hurricane Hanna struck
the New Jersey State Championship and
made for a wet afternoon and an on the
edge of your seat fourth race with some
amazing record breaking speeds for a
number of daring boats. In attendance
were three boats from Ocean City YC,
two from Susquehanna YC, one from
Little Egg YC, and the remaining from
Mermate
News
Riverton YC. George Harrington of
Monmouth was first, Mark Schneider
second and John Townsend third, both of
the home Club. Fleet #34 sailors sat this
one out.
The economy and threat of bad
weather cut down on attendance at the
traditional fall regattas. Manahawkin
Bay Cup at Surf City drew ten boats on a
day that was supposed to be stormy but
wound up to be a great sailing day. Five
quick races were sailed back to back in a
shifty northerly where positions changed
on almost every leg. Jim Carson prevailed
with Bob Sangstacken second and
Rich Warren third. Bill Bogardus took in
the Last Blast at Nyack. The regatta was
won by Justin Copland, a Boat Grant
participant, in drifting conditions.
Jody Lutz, Bill Bogardus, and
Jim Carson traveled to Annapolis for the
Frigid Digit which certainly lived up to
its name this year. A forecast of high
winds and frigid temperatures kept attendance
well below usual standards. Saturday’s
races were delayed by reports of
winds gusting to 34 knots. However,
three races were finally sailed in 15 to 20
knots with a few higher gusts. Sunday’s
races were canned when the winds were
even higher and the temperature lower.
Canadian Jamie Allen took first followed
by Allan Terhune and David Stark. Jody
was eighth, Bill eleventh and Jim twelfth
as 32 boats managed to survive. Complete
results of this and other Lightning events
can be seen on the ILCA website,
www.lightningclass.org.
On the local scene, Lightnings
qualified six boats in the Metedeconk Fall
Series. Mitch Hnatt prevailed by one
point over Jim Carson. Jason Lutz was
third. See the MRYC website,
www.metedeconkriveryc.org for complete
results.
Lightning sailors are already
looking forward to the 2009 season with
the Worlds slated for Vermont in September.
The North Americans will be in
Sodus Bay, New York in August along
with the Masters, Juniors and Women’s.
Since this NA’s is not a World qualifier,
attendance is expected to be down. The
2010 North Americans site has yet to be
selected. The 2011 Worlds will be held in
the City of Buzios, 105 miles northeast of
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
CLUB
EWS
It has been a very busy season for the Mermates, and I
believe, very successful. This is due to my hard working officers.
I am most thankful for the help I received from Colleen
VanPell, Lisa Scott-Brennan, and Patty Mroczko. I also had
great committee chairpersons who came to my aid throughout
the year. I thank you all for your help. I especially want to
thank Fran Lynn. She got me into this position and promised to
be my right hand, and she never let me down. Her creative
ideas and excellent cooking skills made our events run
smoothly and profitably.
The Mermates have one more great evening planned
for the families of MRYC. We will be hosting our everpopular
Trim-A-Tree Party on Friday, December 5. Don’t miss
this chance to enjoy an evening of holiday fun and great homemade
treats. Please see the enclosed flyer for more details.
