Page 6 Smoke Signals Volume 29 Issue 7 Catboat Fleet News This article is written with a heavy heart due to the passing of Greg Arner, Club Architect, Sanderling sailor, golfer, good friend, and all around wonderful person. He will be sorely missed. Our best wishes go to Emi and the rest of the Arner family. As far as sailing goes, the Thursday evening championship series is attracting record numbers of boats. Eighteen (18) Sandpipers have registered and are racing as well as 9 Sanderlings. With 4 races sailed to date Paul Gelenitis has a commanding lead in the Sandpiper fleet followed by Dan Hurley(MA24), Dave Alldian, and Janet Urbanowicz in 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th , respectively. In the Sanderlings, John Cutting has a slim lead over Craig McLean and Len Dooren. However, with at least 4 races left, both series are still wide open. Sunday sailing still suffers from the motorboat traffic in the afternoon and only 2 Sanderlings and 5 Sandpipers are presently registered. In the Sanderlings, Glen Zimmermann won the only 2 races held to date and in the Sandpipers, Mimi Dimon has a slim lead over Jim Gelenitis. Our Sandpipers continue to do very well in BBYRA competition. At present, with two racing days completed, Paul and Terri Gelenitis are tied for 2 nd and Mimi Dimon is a close 8 th . Fifteen boats have been racing. In the Sanderlings, high winds forced abandonment of one race and limited our participation in another. Bob Reago and Alan Papp are representing us. The largest catboat of all, Raven, won the last BBYRA race at Mantoloking and is near the top of the fleet. Not much else to report except that some of our members have been sneaking over to Forge Pond in an effort to get ready for the Biathlon on August 21 st . Time to get those teams together and let Len Dooren know if you plan to participate. The traditional chipping contest starts on the front lawn at 9:00 A.M. Other events to note are the beginning of the Sanderling/Sandpiper Mini Series on August 13, the Skipper Mate race on September 3, and the Night Race on September 11. Check the club book for times. John Cutting Raven won the Louise Edgar Colie Trophy for A Cats at the Mantoloking/ Manasquan River BBYRA Regatta July 11th. This was the first Central Atlantic District Championship to be open to all Lightning Class sailors. Four out-of-District crews helped swell the ranks to 33 boats, far larger than any recent Districts Neighboring District boats actually copped three of the four top spots dropping Jody to third overall. District runner-up was our Keith Taboada (5 th overall). Ocean City has little choice of sailing venue with nearby waters crowded with pleasure craft and the traditional back bay site inadequate in size to support a regatta of this nature. While the tow to and from the waters off Margate is long and rough (big tidal flow against ocean swells) once there the venue provides super sailing conditions. Saturday’s races were sailed in a building southerly that topped off with gusts well into the 20 knot range. Our George Francis and Ocean City’s John Parker decided to sail upside down precipitating a bizarre “rescue” by the US Coast Guard complete with helicopter and swimmers. If you want details, ask George. Complete results are on the ILCA website www.lightningclass.org. Other July regattas were the States at Barnegat Light and the Atlantic Coast Championship at Toms River. The latter is prep for the 2010 North Americans scheduled to be sailed on the Cedar Creek course next August. See the Lightning Class website for results. Coming up this month are the Junior North Americans, qualifier for the Youth Worlds in Salinas Ecuador in 2010 and the Womens and Masters North Americans and the North American Championship. All these events will be sailed on Lake Ontario off Sodus Bay about 30 miles east of Rochester NY and all can be followed on the ILCA website starting August 5. As previously noted, Metedeconk will be represented by Vice Commodor Jody Lutz in the Lightning World Championship at Mallets Bay, Vermont in early September. Sixty plus boats are expected. Former MRYC member Billy Bogardus also qualified. Locally, four Fleet Lightnings have a shot at winning the BBYRA Championship with races scheduled each Saturday starting August 15 at Normandy Beach. Results so far are too sketchy to be meaningful. See the BBYRA website www.bbyra.org for results. The Junior Championship, sailed in Lightnings, swill take place at 3:00 pm on August 16. Conditions permitting sailing will take place in front of the Club. Should be fun to watch. We all wish Fleet Member Jay Lutz a speedy recovery and return to sailing! Jim Carson Women’s Wet Wednesdays (WWW) If you haven’t made it to Women’s Wet Wednesdays this season, it’s not too late to join us!!! July has provided us with some great wind and weather. We’ve seen a lot of new sailors join the fun as we spend the evening racing and improving skills. The WWW Powder Puff Championships begin Wednesday August 5. Additional races will be held on August 12 and 19 (August 26 is make-up night in case of bad weather/free sailing.) The plan is to race two races on August 5 and 12 with one race on August 19. Boats need to be rigged and registered by 6:00 pm and there will be a brief skipper’s meeting. Awards will be presented at the club awards ceremony in the fall. All of the sailing is followed by delicious meals and lots of laughs. Even if you can’t make all of the race nights, it’s not too late for you to bring your Sunfish and join us for a few.
