Catboat Fleet News
This article is written with a
heavy heart due to the passing of Greg
Arner, Club Architect, Sanderling sailor,
golfer, good friend, and all around wonderful
person. He will be sorely missed.
Our best wishes go to Emi and the rest of
the Arner family.
As far as sailing goes, the Thursday
evening championship series is attracting
record numbers of boats. Eighteen
(18) Sandpipers have registered and
are racing as well as 9 Sanderlings. With
4 races sailed to date Paul Gelenitis has a
commanding lead in the Sandpiper fleet
followed by Dan Hurley(MA24), Dave
Alldian, and Janet Urbanowicz in 2 nd ,
3 rd and 4 th , respectively. In the Sanderlings,
John Cutting has a slim lead over
Craig McLean and Len Dooren. However,
with at least 4 races left, both series
are still wide open.
Sunday sailing still suffers from
the motorboat traffic in the afternoon
and only 2 Sanderlings and 5 Sandpipers
are presently registered. In the Sanderlings,
Glen Zimmermann won the only
2 races held to date and in the Sandpipers,
Mimi Dimon has a slim lead over
Jim Gelenitis.
Our Sandpipers continue to do
very well in BBYRA competition. At
present, with two racing days completed,
Paul and Terri Gelenitis are tied for 2 nd
and Mimi Dimon is a close 8 th . Fifteen
boats have been racing. In the Sanderlings,
high winds forced abandonment of
one race and limited our participation in
another. Bob Reago and Alan Papp are
representing us. The largest catboat of
all, Raven, won the last BBYRA race at
Mantoloking and is near the top of the
fleet.
Not much else to report except
that some of our members have been
sneaking over to Forge Pond in an effort
to get ready for the Biathlon on August
21 st . Time to get those teams together and
let Len Dooren know if you plan to participate.
The traditional chipping contest
starts on the front lawn at 9:00 A.M.
Other events to note are the beginning
of the Sanderling/Sandpiper Mini
Series on August 13, the Skipper Mate
race on September 3, and the Night Race
on September 11. Check the club book for
times.
