Manasquan <strong>River</strong> YC Challenge Cup –<br />

Dedicated by the Commodore of the Manasquan<br />

<strong>River</strong> <strong>Yacht</strong> <strong>Club</strong> to foster offshore<br />

PHRF racing and to promote camaraderie<br />

between the Manasquan and <strong>Metedeconk</strong><br />

<strong>River</strong> <strong>Yacht</strong> <strong>Club</strong>s, the Challenge<br />

Cup was awarded to the <strong>Metedeconk</strong><br />

team at the inaugural event in 2008.<br />

The 2009 race was sailed in a dying easterly<br />

in lumpy seas on Sunday June 28.<br />

Despite the best efforts of the defending<br />

<strong>Metedeconk</strong> team of Rick Eytel’s Big<br />

Grin, Gary Puco’s Phoenix and Fritz<br />

Baier’s Ali-Cat, the Manasquan team redeemed<br />

itself after last year’s loss by winning<br />

the 12-mile marathon in 2009. Scuttlebutt<br />

has it that the <strong>Metedeconk</strong> team<br />

promptly shrugged off the loss and proceeded<br />

to win Manasquan’s post-race<br />

party.<br />

Fourth of July <strong>River</strong> Race – Ten boats,<br />

including one Sneakbox, a 420 and an<br />

auxiliary, made it to the starting line for<br />

the first running of the Fourth of July<br />

<strong>River</strong> Race on Sunday July 5. Originally<br />

sailed by the Sanderling fleet and subsequently<br />

the Sandpipers, the 2009 <strong>River</strong><br />

Race was opened to all classes and scored<br />

under the Portsmouth Yardstick. Conditions<br />

were challenging on the river as the<br />

fleet struggled to round the <strong>Club</strong>’s fixed<br />

racing barrels on a very light westerly<br />

breeze. Jason Lutz’ Lightning made the<br />

best of the drifter winning the event ahead<br />

of a second Lightning skippered by Dick<br />

Thomas. Craig Dooren took home the<br />

third-place trophy and the award for the<br />

best finish in the Sanderlings as did Adrienne<br />

Ferrie in the Sandpipers.<br />

Block Island Race Week – The 23rd<br />

running of the Storm Trysail <strong>Club</strong>’s<br />

Block Island Race Week took place June<br />

21 – 26. A persistent low-pressure system<br />

parked over New England the entire<br />

week brought foul weather but did nothing<br />

to dampen the spirit of the 1,500+<br />

participants. 153 IRC, PHRF and offshore<br />

one-design boats competed in seventeen<br />

classes, making it one of the largest<br />

big boat regattas in North America.<br />

Dave Alldian’s Cymothoe was the only<br />

<strong>Metedeconk</strong> boat to make this year’s<br />

trek to Block Island Sound. Accompanied<br />

by crewmembers David, Jr., Jim<br />

Aridas, Ron LaNeve, Eric Lehnes, Steve<br />

Lopez, John Schwind and Corey<br />

Wingerter, Dave sailed his Sabre 36 to a<br />

third place finish in PHRF Division III.<br />

Winning two of seven races and scoring<br />

a second in the wild Around the Island<br />

Race which saw multiple collisions, dismasting<br />

and withdrawals, the <strong>Metedeconk</strong><br />

team had to swallow a DSQ in the<br />

fifth race. The award for the best overall<br />

performance of the regatta was given to<br />

the winner of the J/105 class, Power<br />

Play, co skippered by Bruce Stone and<br />

Scott DeWeese of San Francisco.<br />

PHRF – The 2009 PHRF Championship<br />

Series wrapped up on July 7 with the<br />

scheduled nine races completed. After a<br />

soggy start in May and early June, the<br />

sun and warm breezes returned for the<br />

last weeks of racing. In the largest fleet,<br />

C Division, Bill Bogardus overcame a<br />

DNF midway through the series and won<br />

three of the last four races to take the<br />

overall win ahead of Gary Puco in second<br />

and Mark Connell in third. In B<br />

Division, Dave Alldian and crew scored<br />

no less than a second place in the eight<br />

races in which they competed to win<br />

their fleet championship. Jack Wood’s<br />

boat finished second overall just one<br />

point of Rick Eytel’s crew in the Big<br />

Grin. Jarrett Lynn’s J/24 won all six<br />

races in which the boat competed to take<br />

first overall in A Division. Brothers<br />

Dave and Alan Ruiter came in second<br />

and third respectively. Only two boats<br />

qualified in the Sportboat Division with<br />

Mitch Hnatt’s Melges 24 taking first<br />

place. By virtue of their first-place finishes,<br />

Bill, Dave and Jarrett qualify and<br />

advance to the final round of the overall<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Championship on September 20.<br />

The NJORC continues with the<br />

Squan TriSail Regatta August 1-2. Atlantic<br />

Highland’s Blue Water Regatta follows<br />

on August 8-9.<br />

Tune Up Regatta – Paul Gelenitis bested<br />

a fleet of eight boats by winning two of<br />

three races and taking the overall win in<br />

the Sandpiper class at the 2009 Tune Up<br />

Regatta hosted by MRYC on June 20.<br />

Second place was up for grabs with an<br />

unusual three-way tie. Mimi Dimon won<br />

the tiebreaker for second ahead of Jim<br />

Gelenitis in third. Dan Harding, sailing<br />

for Bay Head, had to settle for fourth<br />

place. Charlie Barclay squeaked out a<br />

win in the Sanderling class only one point<br />

ahead of Al Cavaiola in second. With a<br />

win in the final race of the series, Frank<br />

Dockery finished third overall.<br />
