Manasquan River YC Challenge Cup –
Dedicated by the Commodore of the Manasquan
River Yacht Club to foster offshore
PHRF racing and to promote camaraderie
between the Manasquan and Metedeconk
River Yacht Clubs, the Challenge
Cup was awarded to the Metedeconk
team at the inaugural event in 2008.
The 2009 race was sailed in a dying easterly
in lumpy seas on Sunday June 28.
Despite the best efforts of the defending
Metedeconk team of Rick Eytel’s Big
Grin, Gary Puco’s Phoenix and Fritz
Baier’s Ali-Cat, the Manasquan team redeemed
itself after last year’s loss by winning
the 12-mile marathon in 2009. Scuttlebutt
has it that the Metedeconk team
promptly shrugged off the loss and proceeded
to win Manasquan’s post-race
party.
Fourth of July River Race – Ten boats,
including one Sneakbox, a 420 and an
auxiliary, made it to the starting line for
the first running of the Fourth of July
River Race on Sunday July 5. Originally
sailed by the Sanderling fleet and subsequently
the Sandpipers, the 2009 River
Race was opened to all classes and scored
under the Portsmouth Yardstick. Conditions
were challenging on the river as the
fleet struggled to round the Club’s fixed
racing barrels on a very light westerly
breeze. Jason Lutz’ Lightning made the
best of the drifter winning the event ahead
of a second Lightning skippered by Dick
Thomas. Craig Dooren took home the
third-place trophy and the award for the
best finish in the Sanderlings as did Adrienne
Ferrie in the Sandpipers.
Block Island Race Week – The 23rd
running of the Storm Trysail Club’s
Block Island Race Week took place June
21 – 26. A persistent low-pressure system
parked over New England the entire
week brought foul weather but did nothing
to dampen the spirit of the 1,500+
participants. 153 IRC, PHRF and offshore
one-design boats competed in seventeen
classes, making it one of the largest
big boat regattas in North America.
Dave Alldian’s Cymothoe was the only
Metedeconk boat to make this year’s
trek to Block Island Sound. Accompanied
by crewmembers David, Jr., Jim
Aridas, Ron LaNeve, Eric Lehnes, Steve
Lopez, John Schwind and Corey
Wingerter, Dave sailed his Sabre 36 to a
third place finish in PHRF Division III.
Winning two of seven races and scoring
a second in the wild Around the Island
Race which saw multiple collisions, dismasting
and withdrawals, the Metedeconk
team had to swallow a DSQ in the
fifth race. The award for the best overall
performance of the regatta was given to
the winner of the J/105 class, Power
Play, co skippered by Bruce Stone and
Scott DeWeese of San Francisco.
PHRF – The 2009 PHRF Championship
Series wrapped up on July 7 with the
scheduled nine races completed. After a
soggy start in May and early June, the
sun and warm breezes returned for the
last weeks of racing. In the largest fleet,
C Division, Bill Bogardus overcame a
DNF midway through the series and won
three of the last four races to take the
overall win ahead of Gary Puco in second
and Mark Connell in third. In B
Division, Dave Alldian and crew scored
no less than a second place in the eight
races in which they competed to win
their fleet championship. Jack Wood’s
boat finished second overall just one
point of Rick Eytel’s crew in the Big
Grin. Jarrett Lynn’s J/24 won all six
races in which the boat competed to take
first overall in A Division. Brothers
Dave and Alan Ruiter came in second
and third respectively. Only two boats
Tune Up Regatta – Paul Gelenitis bested
a fleet of eight boats by winning two of
three races and taking the overall win in
the Sandpiper class at the 2009 Tune Up
Regatta hosted by MRYC on June 20.
Second place was up for grabs with an
unusual three-way tie. Mimi Dimon won
the tiebreaker for second ahead of Jim
Gelenitis in third. Dan Harding, sailing
for Bay Head, had to settle for fourth
place. Charlie Barclay squeaked out a
win in the Sanderling class only one point
ahead of Al Cavaiola in second. With a
win in the final race of the series, Frank
Dockery finished third overall.
