Page 10 Smoke Signals Volume 29 Issue 7 I can’t believe its August already!! The sailing program is going great! The kids are learning a lot and having fun! Don’t forget to check out our junior website and blog for highlights of the junior sailing season. Wednesday race results as well as various regatta results can be found there. Thanks to Cindy Lutz for posting the highlights for us! The 26 th annual Powder Puff Regatta was a huge success! Thanks Vivian and Karen and all the volunteers for another wonderful and memorable day. The kids had fun and several of our own girls placed in their various fleets! Green Fleet: 3 rd Place: Sophie Ruggiero 4 th Place: Emily Gonzalas 6 th Place: Rylee Wernoch White Fleet: 3 rd Place: Madeleine Kardek Blue Fleet: 4 th Place: Abby Kardek 420’s: 2 nd Place: Haley Kardek and Alex Lehnes Sunfish: 5 th Place: Catherine Baier Also, congratulations to JUIOR ACTIVITIES Gillian Francis for winning the Marion Freeth Sportsmanship Award and Abby Kardek, winner of the Best MCYC Sailor Award. Good job girls! Way to go! As for the Ironman Regatta, we also had a few boys who placed: 3 rd Green Fleet Opti: Cole Banias 4 th Blue Fleet Opti: Jack Ruggiero 6 th Laser Fleet: David Alldian 2 nd Sunfish Fleet: Michael Damico Good job boys! Thanks again to our Junior Social Committee: Lisa Bonevento, Alison Boland and Tracey Ackerman, for all their hard work on the Fourth of July picnic. It was truly a picture perfect day! Our photographer, Justin Chando, has posted pictures from our various sailing and swimming events on his website. These photos are available for individual purchase. Visit www.justinchando.com. Also, order forms are out for our season end yearbook. Don’t forget to place your order. Steve Fortunato has been hard at work creating another video masterpiece of our junior season. DVDs will be available for purchase as a Junior fundraiser. Those of you who saw last year’s video know what an amazing job he does. His new 2009 video will premiere August 21 after the Junior Awards Ceremony. Thanks Steve! We appreciate all your efforts! Please note these key dates: Monday, August 3: Junior Commodore Ball (ages 12 and older only) Friday, August 21: Junior Award Ceremony and Pool Party Lastly, if you can continue to remind your kids to pick up after themselves, we would appreciate it. Also, all gear should always be kept on the North side of the club (water side). Thanks and happy sailing!! Anne Ruggiero 26 TH AUAL JR. POWDER PUFF A PERFECT 10! PIK IS’T JUST A COLOR… IT’S A ATTITUDE! This was the theme for the 26 th Annual Junior Powder Puff Regatta and the sailors proved just that! We had a perfect day – a 10+ with just enough sun, wind, and 250 enthusiastic sailors! We saw plenty of pink that day and nothing but great attitudes to go along with it!! 250 young ladies sailed out of our Club after being treated to a scrumptious breakfast, coming back in for a great lunch and goodies afterwards. Who could ask for more? They did and they got just that….they received terrific race committee work, enough patrols to keep them safe and lots of encouragement. Of course, the annual Goodie Bags donated by Mary Holder/Mary Zanowic with all the “stuff” is always a highlight. This year we were fortunate enough to add the new Barrel Bags donated by the Whitman Family to go along with the Powder Puff Bag. It wouldn’t be the Powder Puff without the traditional bears and this year was no exception. Karen Haupt made sure each participant received a white bear in a PINK outfit and the winners also received the traditional bears as well. Chairperson Karen Haupt pulled off another successful regatta with her attention to awards, raffles, and the daunting task of registration – we turned away 30 sailors— safety first. I’m sure these girls won’t wait ‘till the last minute next year – so Metedeconk sailors – be sure to get your registration in EARLY. Hats off to Mary Ellen Butryn and the galley crew who worked hard all day getting the sailors, instructors, parents and all the patrols and race committee fed and hydrated all day long. Jennifer Alldian, Jack Heacock also had a major roll in the success along with the Regatta Committee and many race committee volunteers. To the 80+ volunteers – THANK YOU. We couldn’t do this regatta without your assistance. To our Head PRO – Bob Reago, Opti PRO – Chris Petracco, Opti Green PRO – Mimi Dimon and 420, Sunfish and Laser PRO – John Cutting, Tom Sollas - Judge – congratulations again on providing our young ladies with a great day of sailing. Getting in four races and allowing a throw out is a wonderful way to show our Racing Management Skills to the rest of the bay. We will try again to win the coveted BBYRA Race Management Award. To all those to assisted in any way, directing traffic, launching boats, to the Sandpiper Fleet for moving all their boats to give us room in the dry slip area, to those who donated to the raffle tables and most especially to Commodore & First Lady Eytel for donating the first ever Commodore’s prize – an iPod Touch, the Kardeks for donating the fantastic Sail of Choice and to the Committee for once again providing the PINK Bike. These top prizes along with 40 others made for a terrific afternoon. Our sailors had team shirts made up and it brought tears to my eyes when I looked out and saw just how many other yacht clubs had their girls in team shirts with the words Jr. Powder Puff on them. Winning the Best MCYC Sailor Award was Abby Kardek for coming in 4 th out of 54 boats.
Volume 29 Issue 7 POWDER PUFF Gillian Francis won the Marion Freeth Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations to both of these young ladies for a job well done. Many of our girls did well and all the results can be found on our website along with the BBYRA website. This day has for years now far surpassed anything I could have dreamed of 26 years ago.
