PAGE 2 SMOKE SIGNALS VOLUME 28, ISSUE 4 Vice Commodore Report Stop the presses!!! Allow me a moment of self-indulgence. I need to make two announcements. First, for those of you who are faithful readers of my articles, you might recall the saga of my college graduate daughter. She graduated from Susquehanna University last May. At the end of last summer she got a job working on the crew of a tall ship in Key West taking tourists out for a sail for a few hours and getting them even more intoxicated. I was disappointed in her job, but at the same time envious. Well I’m proud to say all our nagging paid off. She took our advice and now has a job worthy of a college graduate. She is working as marketing coordinator for The Westin, a Starwood resort. It’s a real 9-5, Monday through Friday type job, with all the stress and pressure of the real world. You got it, Key West. To think I was worried. Second announcement. My son got engaged. He is a lieutenant in the Navy, currently teaching navigation and seamanship at the Naval Academy. His fiancée, Kristin, is from the Annapolis area, and is a beautiful, intelligent lady. We welcome her into our family. For all of you who remember my son as a sailor, fisherman, boat enthusiast, and experienced party animal, you need to revise those images. Those days are gone; he just doesn’t know it yet. We are looking forward to a February wedding at the Naval Academy chapel. That’s it for personal stuff.... now back to the yacht club. JUNIORS – There will be a junior parent’s meeting on Friday June 6 at 6:00 PM with Friday Night Dinner to follow. The bar will be open early, grab a drink and attend the meeting. For those who can’t make that one, there will be another meeting Saturday morning on June 7 at 10:00 AM. Look to your e-mails and Smoke Signals for swimsuit times and places. The Junior Committee puts so much time and effort into this program. If you see them, please give them a pat on the back. SOCIALS – By the time you read this Flag Raising will be either done or a few days away. Many thanks to Kathy Fazio and her committee for their efforts. Since I am writing this in mid-April, I assume we all had a great time and the weather was perfect. The next event will be the Commodore’s Cocktail Party on Saturday, June 14, so mark that date. At that event we honor our past commodores, and introduce our new members. Looking forward to seeing you there. BAR – The Friday Night Dinners sponsored by the bar have been a huge success. We have members playing bridge, watching sports, and just relaxing in our room with a million dollar view. It is a very relaxing time. Why don’t you join us? I have been racking my brain to come up with a name for these dinners in order to distinguish between the volunteer dinners and the bar dinners. The best one so far is “TGIF Dinners”. Any other suggestions? Let me know. These dinners are served at cost, so the club barely breaks even. The sole purpose is to bring us together, patronize the bar, and enjoy our club. I think Rick Haupt has created something of considerable value to the camaraderie of our club. I hope it continues. By the way Rick, I liked the new bar bill. It is the only thing I get in the mail I can read without my glasses. FRIDAY NIGHT DINNERS - Contact Terri Gelenitis to reserve a date. Gelen505@aol.com. Tom Glowacki and crew have already signed on for two dates, along with a few others, If you are new and want to help out, she will put you in touch with the right people and get you involved. Join this great MRYC tradition. RENTALS - If you wish to rent the club for your party, contact Colette Commisso. Prime dates are going fast. Remember the rental of the club is for members only. IN SYMPATHY Rick Eytel Vice Commodore The officers and members of MRYC extend their sincere sympathy to the family of Greg Collins who died on April 17th. Greg and his family have been members of the club since 1977. A sailor, a fisherman, and a great family man, Greg will be missed by all who knew him.

Your committee members under the Rear Commodore believe we are ready to go. We are finalizing some last minute touches to the club and will continue to monitor the club grounds as we move forward through the 2008 season. We want all members and guests to be proud and impressed with our facilities We welcome our Spring Sailing Season for 2008, with an Interclub National Regatta on April 18 (Class Measurement), 19,20! The PHRF Spring Series begins Tuesday, April 29. Thanks to our many members who were instrumental in preparing our Fleet for 2008: Fred Underwood, Al Miller, Ed and Pat Maritz, Paul Egee, John Schwind, Brandon Underwood, Joe Duffy, Bob Reago, Bill Rodenberg, Rick Eytel, Fritz and Allison Baier, Barry Pearce, Kipp Heacock, Jim Carson, Peter Zanowic, Herb McCutchan, the Husak family, Jody Lutz, Bud McArthur and Len Dooren. The weather forecast was for rain but we carried on and were rewarded by one of the nicer days of Spring. My thanks go out to all the members who came on that Saturday to help the club get ready for the season. Your time and effort was greatly appreciated. The Slip Agreement is on our website. We have new equipment for patrolling, enjoy a day on the water by patrolling in a new boat! We care about the well being of our sailors! Lets keep MRYC in Ship Shape - Keep your property neat! Be proud of our club, many members work very hard at keeping our club the best it can be! Volunteer and volunteer often, please! April - All boats should be in their assigned spaces, Wet Slips and Dry Slips. Interclub Dinghy’s should be near the volleyball area or home. I will be walking the property identifying boats. Thanks to the Regatta Committee for working diligently on our Regatta Lynn for providing the breakfast and lunch for the members. Thanks, also tothe group on Friday that helped put the hoists motors back: Pete Zanowic, Whiting Stulz, Rick Eytel and our club manager Al B. As usual, we have many sailing and social events this year. We’ll stay on top of the club and grounds so all goes smoothly and the club looks good.
