I hope this issue of Smoke Signals
finds you excited about the upcoming
season. Things are already off to a
great start. Following a successful work
day, the clubhouse, grounds and docks
are in great shape for Flag Raising and
the full sailing and social season. The
club has had an active spring, with Friday
Night Dinners sponsored by the Bar
Committee every week, several rentals,
and most significantly, hosting the Interclub
Dinghy Nationals April 18-20.
Preparations for this
event included an
early commissioning
of our expanded fleet
(be sure to check out
our new red Zodiac inflatable for the
Juniors and Boston Whaler for evening
Patrols). Hats off to our Fleet Captain,
Janice Baier, our Regatta Committee,
and all our volunteers for supporting this
national event on the Metedeconk.
Flag Raising is May 3 and I am
looking forward to seeing you all there.
Be sure to pick up your membership
packet while you are there. It contains
your 2008 Club Directory and membership
card. Please take a moment to review
the directory. In addition to telling
you who is who and what happens when,
it contains our By Laws and Policies
(some new) which you should become
familiar with. Your membership card
will provide you with the new combination
to the west door of the clubhouse.
Following Flag Raising, our
sailing season kicks off with Sunday One
Design and the PHRF Tuesday evening

JUNIOR POWDER PUFF CELEBRATES ITS 25 TH ANNIVERSARY

This year our yacht club will be hosting the 25 th Annual Jr. Powder Puff Regatta. This regatta has become the largest allgirl
regatta in the nation! Last year we hosted over 225 young women sailing Opti’s, Lasers, 420’s and Sunfish. The success of
this regatta is due to the many volunteers from our club. Most of the volunteers no longer have children sailing in the regatta.
Since their children had such positive memories, they continue their support so other children can have the same experience.
We rely on corporate sponsors, store donations and club member donations to sustain this regatta. The girls are given a
beach bag (donated by Club Member Mary Holder of Mary Holder Realty) filled with products solicited by our committee. They
also receive a Teddy Bear with a printed T-shirt in their bag. Everyone goes home a winner!
We are looking for donations of products and goodies to fill these bags. In the past we have had donations of perfume,
water bottles, calculators, pens, playing cards, stationery, chap stick and numerous other items. We also have a gift table comprised
of many assorted items that have been donated by club members, club organizations or local establishments. (All items are
geared for young ladies ages 8 – 18.)
If you know someone (who knows someone or has a contact) that can get us products, please let Karen Haupt or Vivian
Dooren now. We have solicitation letters for this very purpose ready to go.
We are also looking for cash donations this year to offset the commemorative sterling silver charm each participant will
receive with the 25 th Anniversary MCYC Jr. Powder Puff Logo on it. If you are interested in being a Gold $750, Silver $500 or
Bronze $250 sponsor, please contact Vivian Dooren for details and forms. We are also offering a Patron Sponsorship for $50 and a

Vice Commodore Report
Stop the presses!!! Allow me a
moment of self-indulgence. I need to
make two announcements. First, for
those of you who are faithful readers of
my articles, you might recall the saga of
my college graduate daughter. She graduated
from Susquehanna University last
May. At the end of last summer she got a
job working on the crew of a tall ship in
Key West taking tourists out for a sail for
a few hours and getting them even more
intoxicated. I was disappointed in her
job, but at the same time envious. Well
I’m proud to say all our nagging paid off.
She took our advice and now has a job
worthy of a college graduate. She is
working as marketing coordinator for The
Westin, a Starwood resort. It’s a real 9-5,
Monday through Friday type job, with all
the stress and pressure of the real world.

You got it, Key West. To think I
was worried.
Second announcement. My son
got engaged. He is a lieutenant in the
Navy, currently teaching navigation and
seamanship at the Naval Academy. His
fiancée, Kristin, is from the Annapolis
area, and is a beautiful, intelligent lady.
We welcome her into our family. For all
of you who remember my son as a sailor,
fisherman, boat enthusiast, and experienced
party animal, you need to revise
those images. Those days are gone; he
just doesn’t know it yet. We are looking
forward to a February wedding at the
Naval Academy chapel.
That’s it for personal stuff....
now back to the yacht club.

SOCIALS – By the time

days away. Many thanks
to Kathy Fazio and her committee for
their efforts. Since I am writing this in
mid-April, I assume we all had a great
time and the weather was perfect. The
next event will be the Commodore’s
Cocktail Party on Saturday, June 14, so
mark that date. At that event we honor
our past commodores, and introduce our
new members. Looking forward to seeing
you there.
BAR – The Friday Night Dinners sponsored
by the bar have been a huge success.
We have members playing bridge,
watching sports, and just relaxing in our
room with a million dollar view. It is a
very relaxing time. Why don’t you join
us? I have been racking my brain to come
up with a name for these dinners in order
to distinguish between the volunteer dinners
and the bar dinners. The best one so
far is “TGIF Dinners”. Any other suggestions?
Let me know. These dinners are
served at cost, so the club barely breaks
even. The sole purpose is to bring us together,
patronize the bar, and enjoy our
club. I think Rick Haupt has created
something of considerable value to the
camaraderie of our club. I hope it continues.
By the way Rick, I liked the new bar
bill. It is the only thing I get in the mail I
can read without my glasses.

Club PHRF – The Commodore of Manasquan
River Yacht Club has issued a
friendly challenge to Metedeconk River’s
PHRF fleet to compete for a new perpetual
trophy to be awarded by the host club.
The MRYC/MCYC Challenge Cup Regatta
will be sailed on an ocean course off
the Manasquan Inlet Sunday, June 22.
The event, intended to foster local offshore
racing, includes a dockside post
race party at Manasquan.
A Cat Fleet – The Barnegat Bay A Cat
Fleet will kick off the 2008 sailing season
with the Wanamaker Weekend, June 13 -
15 The biennial weighing of the fleet will
take place at DeRouvilles’ boat yard on
the afternoon of the 13 and a cocktail
party will follow across the river at the
Island Heights YC. The big cats will
compete for the Wanamaker Trophy in a
three race series starting at noon Saturday,
June 14 on the Toms River. A postrace
dinner dance is planned at Island
Heights. Sunday, June 15 will see the A
Cat Women’s World Championship at
10 am.
J/24s – The US National Championship
will come to the NY/NJ Metropolitan
area when the Richmond County Yacht
Club in Staten Island hosts the event
from May 15- 18. The regatta, to be
sailed in New York’s lower harbor, is
expected attract 70 boats from across the
United States as well as international entries.
The 2008 event will also be a celebration
of the 30 anniversary of the J/24
Class. The 2008 J/24 Parkway Series will
continue on May 24-25 with Raritan YC’s
Memorial Day Regatta and Cape May
Corinthian’s Dead Crab Regatta June 14-
15.
PHRF Mid-Atlantic – PHRF Mid-
Atlantic and the New Jersey Racing Conference
have announced their schedule for
the 2008 sailing year. The season opens
with Keyport YC’s Leukemia Cup June

Joyce and I are planning a sail to
Block Island at the end of June. If anyone
has suggestions concerning the Island or
interesting stopovers in the Sound, please
let us know. I’m sure we will have some
favorites to share on our return.
If anyone has an interesting boating
experience, let me know and we can
share it with other members.
Mark your calendar for Saturday,
August 2 when we will have our Auxiliary
Picnic on the south lawn of the club.
Rain date is Sunday, August 3. We had
a great time last year with specialties
contributed including Jack Whitman’s
“Special Island Punch,” which was not
to be missed.
Let me know if you would be
interested in a raft up on the Metedeconk
this summer.
RECOMMISSIONING TIP
I recently changed my engine fuel filter
which is located in a tight place. It has
been difficult to capture fuel as the filter
was removed. This year I encapsulated
the filter with a large plastic freezer bag.
This caught all of the fuel during the
process without spilling a drop.

WOMENS WET WEDNESDAYS
The warm weather is almost here
which means it is time to start getting
your Sunfish ready for Women’s Wet
Wednesdays (WWW). If you haven’t
sailed with WWW before, now is the year
to join us. WWW is a great opportunity
for experienced and new sailors to get out
on the water and improve or learn new
skills, as well as take part in some racing.
The sailing is fun and is followed by a
casual dinner. All that you need to do is
bring your Sunfish and yourself!
WWW will begin at 6 pm on
June 25 and will run each Wednesday
evening through August. Each evening in
July will include classroom instruction/
discussion as well as time on the water.

The Lightning Southern Circuit,
sailed in March, attracted large numbers
at all three venues attesting to the strength
of the Class. Forty-nine crews showed up
for Savannah’s two-day regatta. Saturday
was a wipeout with 40-knot winds gusting
to over 60-knots that made even launching
boats impossible. However, an early
St. Patrick’s Day fair in downtown Savannah,
the traditional Oyster Roast at the
YC and a novel knot-tying contest directed
by Southern Circuit Chair Amy
Linton kept everyone well occupied. As
for the sailing, Savannah’s race committee
squeezed the entire three-race regatta
into Sunday despite a dying breeze that
made finishing against the tide a true test
of skill (and luck). David Starck of Buffalo
took top honors but the talk of the
regatta was why the scoreboard showed
two firsts and two seconds in the third
race. In granting redress for a race committee
boo-boo, the protest committee
awarded first and second race positions to
two OCS boats that just happened to cross
the finish line first and second. Who says
a head start doesn’t help? Metedeconk’s
only entry, Jim Carson, managed a respectable
16 th place.
So, on to Miami where despite
uncommonly light winds and unusually
cloudy skies, all five races were comfortably
sailed on Biscayne Bay. Mrs. David
(Jody) Starck took up where her husband
left off, easily defeating a 53 boat fleet.
Jim Carson turned back a few years to
man the front of the boat for co-skipper
Eric Reitinger (Brant Beach) as they
sailed to 20 th place. Then on to St Petersburg
via famous Alligator Alley. Yes, we
saw alligators. Jim returned to the tiller
for the final series that also served as the
mid-winter Masters Championship. Day
one was a total loss. Following a long
up-wind sail to the starting line, the
breeze completely quit. The lack of wind
and threat of storms kept the fleet off the
water for the entire day. Again Chair
Linton pulled out the fun and games to
keep frustrated sailors amused until party
time. Day two was something else with a
morning 12-knot southwesterly wind
building to a good old Barnegat Bay
blow in the afternoon. One difference -
big waves. Three races were sailed by
the 69-boat fleet. It was a great day for
the heavyweights with Class Secretary
and sailmaker Brian Hayes showing the
way. After a Saturday night party honoring
Lightning legend George Fisher,
Sunday dawned chilly and ominous but
with enough wind to get everyone to the
starting line for what the sailors hoped
would be a couple of quick races to salvage
five of the scheduled seven races. It
was not to be. After a number of recalls,
one race was finally completed as the
wind came in strong, then dropped to
near nothing at a shortened finish. With
the time limit looming and the Fleet edging
toward shore, the race committee
wisely decided another race would be
impossible. Brian Hayes held on to secure
the win. Taylor Lutz, sailing for the
Metedeconk Fleet wound up 14 th and
Jim Carson was 27 th . Jim managed a
third out of 17 Masters behind Dick Hallagan,
Newark NY, and Bill Mauk, Miami.
Circuit winner was current World
Champion, Rolex Yachtsman of the
Year, etc. Jeff Linton, Sarasota FL followed
by Allan Terhune and Brian
Hayes. Complete results, pictures and

On the administrative side, the
ILCA Governing Board voted unanimously
to table consideration of allowing
GPS enabled compasses on Lightnings,
announced a 1 for 8 North Americans
quota, and awarded the 2009 North
Americans to Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario
in the Finger Lakes region of New York
State.
As reported last month, the local
Lightning season commences with the
annual Long John Regatta sailed on the
Navasink from the Monmouth Boat Club
in Red Bank April 26-27. Metedeconk
sailors are itching to get afloat and are
expected to show up in force. Check the

The Lightning Fleet wraps up
spring sailing with their Club Championship
Series, three races each day on May
4, 18, and June 1, (five to qualify and
three drops if all nine races are completed.)
These races are open to other area
Lightnings as a part of the Open Spring
Series although the Championship is
scored independently. The last race of the
series is for the Paul F. Newman Trophy.
Club winner qualifies for the Sail-Off on
August 17 for the Club Overall Championship
that will be sailed this year in

Mermate
News
The Mermates are off to a great start this
season. Our “Spring Fling” was a great
success. Many thanks to Colette Commisso,
Jodi Sowell and the fourteen members
who donated gifts for the auction. All
who attended had a wonderful luncheon.
Allen Farms was a very fitting location
and the food was excellent.
Our next event will be the Fathers
Day Brunch on Sunday, June 15

your calendar for Saturday evening,
August 23. The Mermates will be
sponsoring the first ever reunion for our
former juniors. This will be a fundraiser
to add money to the Andrew
Brennan Memorial Fund supporting the
Junior Sailing Center. It should be a
fun evening for all. An auction will
also be held to raise money. More details
will follow as we get into the summer,
but now is the time to start contacting
everyone you know to save the
date.
