As Salt River begins, two years have passed since
Turner’s love, Val Bjorn, was shot as they sat together
on the porch of his cabin. Turner, now in his 50’s, excop,
ex-con, Vietnam veteran, former therapist and
now Sheriff in small town Cripple Creek, is trying to
face a truth head-on: ‘Sometimes you just have to see
how much music you can make with what you have
left.’ Then the sheriff’s long-lost son comes ploughing
down Main Street into City Hall in what appears to
be a stolen car. And waiting at Turner’s cabin is his
good friend, Eldon Brown, Val’s banjo on the back of
his motorcycle so that it looks as though he has two
heads. ‘They think I killed someone,’ he says. Turner
asks: ‘Did you?’ And Eldon responds: ‘I don’t know.’
Haunted by his own ghosts, Turner nonetheless goes
in search of a truth he’s not sure he can live with...

Resurrectionist
JACK O’CONNELL
Your only child is lost between this
world and the next, and more than
anything you want him back. A
controversial doctor and a mysterious
stranger claim they have the answer.
Who do you trust? Are you willing to
risk everything? Are you prepared to
enter Limbo?
Part classic noir thriller, part mindbending
fantasy, The Resurrectionist
is a wild ride into a territory where
nothing is as it appears. It is the story of
Sweeney, a druggist by trade, and his
son, Danny, the victim of an accident
that has left him in a persistent coma.
Hoping for a miracle, they have come
to the forbidding, fortress-like Peck
Clinic, whose doctors claim to have
‘resurrected’ other patients who were
lost in the void. What Sweeney comes
to realize, however, is that the real
‘A brilliantly tuned, mesmerizing labyrinth
of a quasi-real world as only a master artist
could draw it.’ – James Ellroy
‘Jack O’Connell has riffed on language, firecleansed
genre conventions, and stripped
the artifice from the modern noir novel,
creating a body of work both exciting and
entirely original.’ – George Pelecanos
‘A masterpiece, O’Connell’s tour de force
has a dose of the uncertainty of Kafka,
the fantasy of Bradbury, the crisp prose of
Greene, and the noir of Chandler.’
– Andrew Gulli, Editor, The Strand Magazine
The
cure for his son’s condition may lie
in Limbo, a fantasy comic book world
into which his son had been drawn
at the time of his accident. Plunged
into the intrigue that envelops the
clinic, Sweeney’s search for answers
leads to sinister back alleys, brutal
dead ends, and terrifying corners of
darkness and mystery.
Jack O’Connell is the author
of four critically acclaimed
novels, which have earned him
something of a cult status. His
work has been praised by James
Ellroy, George Pelecanos, Neil
Gaiman, Katherine Dunn and
Jonathan Carroll, among others.
The setting is the year 2064. Securely fenced off from
the rest of the world life in Eurasia and North America is
constantly improving except for the occasional suicide
however, people live in poverty and misery and countries
religious fanaticism.
Provoked by the events of 9/11 and the US reaction, Jakob Arjouni
has written a clever and satiric novel focusing on a state intelligence
officer and the workings of mass hysteria
Schwartzwald’s biggest problem is his Ashcroft
partner, Chen Wu, a self-righteous loudmouth,
who leaves no taboo unbroken, attacks every
human weakness and takes liberties at will – all
because of the spectacular successes he has
achieved within the organisation.
But is Chen a double agent who is bringing illegal
immigrants into the Eurasian world and is this the
opportunity for Max to get rid of his partner once and
for all?
The mysterious Max Davas, emperor of trading, makes billions
The same trading system that has made him one of the richest and
But when Queenie´s death brings the Doyle empire crashing
CONMAN
RICHARD ASPLIN
Conman is the story of young Neil Martin, a kindly
family man. A bit geeky, a bit nerdy. If you met him, you
would assume he runs a failing comic memorabilia
store in London’s Soho. Which he does. In order
to bail himself out of a huge stock-ruining, poster
sopping basement flood, he needs to claim on his
insurance. Which he would do – if he’d remembered
to pay his premium.
Terrified of losing everything Neil reluctantly agrees
to help Christopher – a passing confidence trickster
Richard Asplin is the author of two previous novels,
T-Shirt & Genes and Gagged – A Thriller With Jokes.
He is a lover of mid-period Woody Allen movies,
Richard Dawkins, David Mamet, Elvis Presley, Big
Bad Voodoo Daddy, Texas Hold’em, vintage guitars
and his cat. Richard currently lives in Wales.
‘The first blue-chip young
novelist of the 21st Century.
Catch him if you can’
– Tony Parsons
– use his premises for a big sting. So the con is on
and the trap is set.
But things are never as they seem in the twilight
world of the confidence man. And when Christopher’s
real target is revealed, Neil finds himself plotting,
switching, swapping and scamming for revenge, for
redemption. And for his life.
ORIGINS
AND
ARGUMENTS
BILL PRICE
The publication of The Origin of Species in 1859 was the
culmination of more than twenty years of work by Charles
Darwin and the ideas he presented in it would lead to a
fundamental change in the way we think about life on
earth. Evolution, as it came to be known, described how
the extraordinary variety of life could develop and adapt by
natural means rather than being entirely the creation of a
supreme being. It was controversial at the time and now,
as the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth approaches in 2009, it
remains the subject of bitter argument, with the opposing
sides of the debate, the supporters of Darwinian evolution
like Richard Dawkins and the proponents of intelligent
design, as polarised as they have ever been. Bill Price
looks at the origins of Darwin’s theory and the arguments
that have surrounded it ever since.
GEORGE A. ROMERO
The dead walk. Putrid corpses claw their way out of
earthy graves and stumble towards civilisation. They are
bloody, rotting, and hungry for human flesh – and it’s all
George Romero’s fault.
With 1968’s Night of the Living Dead Romero unleashed
the modern zombie onto cinemas, annihilating their
voodoo roots and resurrecting them as passed away
friends and dead loved ones. Its sequel, the zombies in
a mall masterpiece Dawn of the Dead, took Romero’s
apocalyptic nightmare further. Its frank depiction of
bloodshed changed horror cinema forever and paved the
way for such recent offerings as Shaun of the Dead and
28 Days Later.
But there is more to Romero than just the living dead. He
reinvented the vampire in Martin, took on the American
military in The Crazies and has collaborated with horror
why filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese
The subject of vampirism continues to fascinate and
excite modern audiences and can be found in a range
of film and TV titles such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and Underworld. More recently Elizabeth Kostova’s
best-selling novel The Historian draws heavily on
Bram Stoker’s novel and Dracula appears as a
character within her story. Many have argued that the
character of Dracula has greatest resonance within
our own times and the current iconic status that the
world’s most famous vampire has achieved suggests
that they may be right.
In this Pocket Essential on Dracula, Giles Morgan
Over the decades, gay cinema has reflected the
community’s journey from persecution to emancipation
to acceptance. Politicised dramas like Victim in the 60s,
The Naked Civil Servant in the 70s, and the AIDS cinema
‘40 years ago as a graduate student I wrote a book about
Spaghetti Westerns, called 10,000 Ways to Die. It’s an
embarrassing tome when I look at it now: full of half-assed
semiotics and other attenuated academic nonsense.
In the intervening period I have had the interesting
experience of being a film director. So now, when I
watch these films, I’m looking at them from a different
I’m thinking about what the filmmakers intended,
how they did that shot, how the director felt when his
film was recut by the studio, and he was creatively
and financially screwed. 10,000 Ways to Die is an
entirely new book about an under-studied subject, the
Spaghetti Western, from a director’s POV. Not only
have these films stood the test of time; some of them
are very high art’. – Alex Cox
MELANCHOLY
DR. JACKY BOWRING
A depressive illness or a passing feeling? Mental
detachment or a precursor to genius? Melancholy is a critical
part of what it is to be human, yet everything from Prozac
They say you can’t cheat an honest man but honest men
are cheated every day. In fact there has never been a better
time to be cheated. Faced with information overload and
lives set on fast-forward we have transformed ourselves
into a nation of suckers. The world is a swindler’s paradise
providing a thousand ways to part the honest man from
his cash. Wouldn’t it be good to know what they are? After
all, forearmed is forewarned.
That’s where The Gentleman’s Guide comes in. Think of it
as the good guy’s guide to the galaxy in which the sneaky
scams of the con artists are laid bare. Entertainingly
written, it reveals the secrets behind all the scams you
are ever likely to encounter as you wend your way
through life: street hustles, pickpockets, ATM dodges,
David Britland is the author of Phantoms of the Card Table
and co-creator of BBC’s The Real Hustle. He is a television
consultant and writer. He has investigated psychics with
James Randi, created psychological illusions with Derren
Brown, spent Halloween with Uri Geller and consulted for
many of the UK’s top magicians.
get rich quick schemes, proposition bets, gambling scams,
consumer rip offs, cyber cons and more.
But reading is not enough. Hands on experience is what
you need if you are to fully understand the wiles of the
con man. And The Gentleman’s Guide contains dozens of
proposition bets and games you can’t lose that show just
how easy we are to manipulate when the circumstances
around a scam are so carefully crafted as to make
even the most outlandish proposition a safe bet. Warn
your friends and practice on your enemies. And always
remember that if you can’t spot the sucker at the table,
then it’s probably you.
B Is for
Beer
A Children’s Book for Grownups
A Grown-up Book for Children
TOM ROBBINS
‘Have you ever wondered why your daddy likes beer so
much? Have you wondered, before you fall asleep at night,
why he sometimes acts kind of “funny” after he’s been drinking
beer? Maybe you’ve even wondered where beer comes from,
because you’re pretty sure it isn’t from a cow. Well, Gracie
Perkel wondered those same things.’
So begins bestselling author Tom Robbins’ first fiction in five
years (and perhaps his most audacious ever), B Is for Beer
explores various aspects of beer culture - ancient, modern,
and otherworldly; brutal, infantile and divine - and dramatizes
the surprising things that happen when the life of a feisty
nursery school kid named Gracie Perkel intersects with each.
Billed by Robbins as ‘the first children’s book about beer,’ this
inspired work taps into the barrel of life’s existential mysteries
and is, of course, truly meant to sit proudly with his other
novels in the grown-up literature section.
Tom Robbins is the author of eight novels including
Another Roadside Attraction, Even Cowgirls Get the
Blues, Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates, Half
Asleep in Frog Pajamas, Jitterbug Perfume, Skinny Legs
and All, Still Life With Woodpecker and Villa Incognito. No
Exit have also published a collection of his writings entitled
Wild Ducks Flying Backward .
‘One of the bravest writers in
America.’ - Chicago Tribune
‘One of the wildest and most
entertaining writers in the world’ -
Financial Times
‘Impossibly imaginative’ - Vanity Fair
‘Tom Robbins has a grasp on things
that dazzles the brain’
- Thomas Pynchon
