<strong>Crime</strong> Preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>Ottawa</strong><br />

Community Safety <strong>Awards</strong><br />

<strong>Crime</strong> Preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>Ottawa</strong> is introducing Community Safety <strong>Awards</strong> to h<strong>on</strong>our individuals and groups<br />

making a c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> safety of our community.<br />

You can nominate any individual, group or program whom you feel has made an<br />

outstanding c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to crime preventi<strong>on</strong> and community safety in <strong>Ottawa</strong>. <strong>Crime</strong> preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

leaders represent all walks of life, volunteers and staff with many different kinds of organizati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

We have created <strong>the</strong> categories of: Community Safety Volunteer; Community Safety <strong>Program</strong>;<br />

Community Safety Leader; Business Leader in Community Safety; Youth Leader; Enforcement<br />

Professi<strong>on</strong>al, and City of <strong>Ottawa</strong> Community Safety Award.<br />

Selecti<strong>on</strong> Criteria<br />

Nominati<strong>on</strong>s will be reviewed and selected based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

Commitment and Perseverance<br />

The individual, group or program has actively participated in preventing crime and enhancing<br />

community safety for at least two years.<br />

Innovati<strong>on</strong> and Use of <strong>the</strong> Evidence<br />

The individual or group has developed an innovative crime preventi<strong>on</strong> idea, project or strategy that is<br />

based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> evidence of what works for preventing crime.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />

The individual, group or program has made a real c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> towards <strong>the</strong> reducti<strong>on</strong> of crime and <strong>the</strong><br />

enhancement of community safety.<br />

Nominati<strong>on</strong> Procedure<br />

To nominate an individual, group or program, complete a nominati<strong>on</strong> form(s) and submit it to <strong>the</strong> CPO<br />

<strong>Awards</strong> Committee.<br />

Save <strong>the</strong> form to your computer to complete it if you wish to submit it by e-mail to CPO@<strong>Ottawa</strong>.ca .<br />

Nominati<strong>on</strong>s can be submitted any time before <strong>the</strong> deadline of October 19, 2009. You can also<br />

submit <strong>the</strong> nominati<strong>on</strong> by regular mail to CPO, 110 Laurier Ave West, <strong>Ottawa</strong>, K1P 1J1<br />

Award Procedure<br />

Successful candidates and nominators will be notified no later than October 28, 2009. An awards<br />

selecti<strong>on</strong> committee made up of <strong>the</strong> two members of <strong>the</strong> CPO Board of Directors, three members of


<strong>the</strong> CPO Community Forum and <strong>the</strong> CPO Staff will adjudicate <strong>the</strong> awards. <strong>Awards</strong> will be presented<br />

at City Hall <strong>on</strong> November 3, 2009.<br />

The <strong>Awards</strong><br />

Community Safety Volunteer<br />

The nominee must be in a n<strong>on</strong>-paid positi<strong>on</strong> as a volunteer and must have dem<strong>on</strong>strated his/her<br />

commitment to <strong>the</strong>ir community through outstanding c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> towards crime preventi<strong>on</strong> and<br />

community safety.<br />

Community Safety <strong>Program</strong><br />

The nominee must be a n<strong>on</strong>-profit program that has made an exemplary c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> area of<br />

community safety and crime preventi<strong>on</strong>. C<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s could include <strong>the</strong> development of innovative<br />

projects for youth, for preventing domestic violence, for preventing substance abuse, for<br />

neighbourhood renewal or any o<strong>the</strong>r crime preventi<strong>on</strong> project.<br />

Community Safety Leader<br />

The nominee may be in a paid capacity working for a school board, hospital, community group or<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r n<strong>on</strong>-profit agency who has provided exemplary leadership in his/her community in <strong>the</strong> area of<br />

crime preventi<strong>on</strong> and community safety.<br />

Business and Community Safety<br />

The nominee should be a business pers<strong>on</strong> who has shown leadership in promoting community safety<br />

and crime preventi<strong>on</strong> by providing partnership, resources, assistance, and program c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Youth Leader<br />

The nominee can be in ei<strong>the</strong>r a paid or n<strong>on</strong>-paid positi<strong>on</strong> but must be under 25 years of age as of<br />

December 31, 2009. Children or youth nominated for this category should be positive role models for<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r children or youth in <strong>the</strong>ir community; should have outstanding leadership skills; and should be<br />

actively involved in crime preventi<strong>on</strong> and community safety projects in <strong>the</strong> broader community or at<br />

school.<br />

Enforcement Professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

The nominee must be an individual who has provided exemplary leadership in <strong>the</strong> area of crime<br />

preventi<strong>on</strong> within an enforcement c<strong>on</strong>text, including but not limited to, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ottawa</strong> Police Service, OC<br />

Transpo Security, OPP, RCMP, <strong>Ottawa</strong> Community Housing Security or a private security firm.<br />

City of <strong>Ottawa</strong> Community Safety Award<br />

The nominee should be a City of <strong>Ottawa</strong> employee (including OC Transpo and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ottawa</strong> Public<br />

Library) that has dem<strong>on</strong>strated outstanding leadership in <strong>the</strong> area of promoting and implementing<br />

crime preventi<strong>on</strong> and community safety strategies within <strong>the</strong>ir field of work.<br />

It is not necessary to specify which award you are nominating an individual/group/program for as <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Awards</strong><br />

Committee will select <strong>the</strong> appropriate award category. More than <strong>on</strong>e recipient may be selected for<br />

each award category and it is possible that <strong>the</strong>re will be no recipients in a category.
