Community Safety Awards
Crime Prevention Ottawa is introducing Community Safety Awards to honour individuals and groups
making a contribution to the safety of our community.
You can nominate any individual, group or program whom you feel has made an
outstanding contribution to crime prevention and community safety in Ottawa. Crime prevention
leaders represent all walks of life, volunteers and staff with many different kinds of organizations.
We have created the categories of: Community Safety Volunteer; Community Safety Program;
Community Safety Leader; Business Leader in Community Safety; Youth Leader; Enforcement
Professional, and City of Ottawa Community Safety Award.
Selection Criteria
Nominations will be reviewed and selected based on the following:
Commitment and Perseverance
The individual, group or program has actively participated in preventing crime and enhancing
community safety for at least two years.
Innovation and Use of the Evidence
The individual or group has developed an innovative crime prevention idea, project or strategy that is
based on the evidence of what works for preventing crime.
Contribution
The individual, group or program has made a real contribution towards the reduction of crime and the
enhancement of community safety.
Nomination Procedure
To nominate an individual, group or program, complete a nomination form(s) and submit it to the CPO
Awards Committee.

Save the form to your computer to complete it if you wish to submit it by e-mail to CPO@Ottawa.ca .
Nominations can be submitted any time before the deadline of October 19, 2009. You can also
submit the nomination by regular mail to CPO, 110 Laurier Ave West, Ottawa, K1P 1J1
Award Procedure
Successful candidates and nominators will be notified no later than October 28, 2009. An awards
selection committee made up of the two members of the CPO Board of Directors, three members of

the CPO Community Forum and the CPO Staff will adjudicate the awards. Awards will be presented
at City Hall on November 3, 2009.
The Awards
Community Safety Volunteer
The nominee must be in a non-paid position as a volunteer and must have demonstrated his/her
commitment to their community through outstanding contribution towards crime prevention and
community safety.
Community Safety Program
The nominee must be a non-profit program that has made an exemplary contribution in the area of
community safety and crime prevention. Contributions could include the development of innovative
projects for youth, for preventing domestic violence, for preventing substance abuse, for
neighbourhood renewal or any other crime prevention project.
Community Safety Leader
The nominee may be in a paid capacity working for a school board, hospital, community group or
other non-profit agency who has provided exemplary leadership in his/her community in the area of
crime prevention and community safety.
Business and Community Safety
The nominee should be a business person who has shown leadership in promoting community safety
and crime prevention by providing partnership, resources, assistance, and program contributions.
Youth Leader
The nominee can be in either a paid or non-paid position but must be under 25 years of age as of
December 31, 2009. Children or youth nominated for this category should be positive role models for
other children or youth in their community; should have outstanding leadership skills; and should be
actively involved in crime prevention and community safety projects in the broader community or at
school.
Enforcement Professional
The nominee must be an individual who has provided exemplary leadership in the area of crime
prevention within an enforcement context, including but not limited to, the Ottawa Police Service, OC
Transpo Security, OPP, RCMP, Ottawa Community Housing Security or a private security firm.
City of Ottawa Community Safety Award
The nominee should be a City of Ottawa employee (including OC Transpo and the Ottawa Public
Library) that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the area of promoting and implementing
crime prevention and community safety strategies within their field of work.

It is not necessary to specify which award you are nominating an individual/group/program for as the
Awards
Committee will select the appropriate award category. More than one recipient may be selected for
each award category and it is possible that there will be no recipients in a category.

This section must be completed and attached to page 1 of the Nomination Form. Attachments such
as relevant reports, newspaper clippings or pamphlets, etc., will also be accepted.
Please describe the nominee’s accomplishments in crime prevention and community safety.
Selection will be based on the level of commitment, perseverance, innovation, use of the evidence,
and contribution illustrated in your submission below. Do not assume that the panel will know
anything about the nominee. Include any attributes/accomplishments of the nominee which you feel
the selection committee should be aware of.
