Special Study Session with Rabbi Juan Mejia at 7:00 pm
THE PLIGHT OF THE B’NEI ANOOSIM: CHILDREN OF THE
SPANISH EXILE
Among the events we commemorate on Tisha B’Av is the
expulsion of Spanish Jewry in 1492. While many Jews left
Spain, others were forcibly converted to Christianity, yet
continued to practice Judaism in secret. The descendents
of those Jews are called the B’nei Anoosim, and many
today are seeking to return to Judaism. Rabbi Juan Mejia
was born in Bogota, Columbia and is himself the
descendent of Jews forcibly converted to Christianity. A
passionate teacher, Rabbi Mejia lives with his wife and
daughter in Oklahoma City and has devoted much of his
energies towards helping other B’nei Anoosim return to
Judaism. He will be joining us over video link to discuss
his own story, and the many successes and challenges
he’s faced in his work.
HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF BETH TIKVAH
To help shape the future of Beth Tikvah, the Transition
Committee is engaging in a series of consultations with our
membership. The first is a survey, which gives you the
chance to express your opinions on everything from
Shabbat services to programming to the role of women in
ritual.
The results will help us to prepare important
recommendations for our Executive and Board. Every
opinion matters. We hope all members will take the time
to complete and return the survey by July 15th. You’ll also
have a chance to express your views at town hall meetings
and focus groups, so watch for those announcements.
Beyond these forums, please feel free to share your
thoughts any time with the chairperson of the Transition
Committee, Doug Millstone, at dmillstone@bellnet.ca.
RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
EATING ALONE
While many religions teach the importance of giving thanks for the food we eat, Judaism is the only religion that
mandates a special formula (called a zimun) when 3 people eat together. Jewish law goes so far as to prohibit the third
person from leaving the meal early so that he might be able to join the other two in the zimun.
In an age where the cult of the individual reigns supreme, Judaism gives us insight into the importance of relating to
God in communion with others. Even a simple prayer of thanksgiving at a meal is elevated, is stronger, is more intense, and
is more meaningful, when friends and family can join together in its recitation.
The further lesson is that when it comes to our sustenance, we’re all interconnected. A bad harvest affects the entire
community just as a national economic downturn will cause more people to go hungry. In that sense, we always sit down to
eat with others; we never eat alone.
