<strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tikvah</strong> is pleased to welcome Dr. Mark Leuchter,<br />

Director of Jewish Studies at Temple University. Dr.<br />

Leuchter is an expert in the formation of law and<br />

prophetic texts in the Hebrew Bible and the history of<br />

ancient Israelite religion. He’s in <strong>Toronto</strong> for the summer<br />

doing research for a new book and we’re honoured to<br />

welcome him to deliver the sermon on Parshat Pinchas.<br />

THE PLIGHT OF THE B’NEI ANOOSIM: CHILDREN OF THE<br />

SPANISH EXILE<br />

Among the events we commemorate on Tisha B’Av is the<br />

expulsion of Spanish Jewry in 1492. While many Jews left<br />

Spain, others were forcibly converted to Christianity, yet<br />

continued to practice Judaism in secret. The descendents<br />

of those Jews are called the B’nei Anoosim, and many<br />

today are seeking to return to Judaism. Rabbi Juan Mejia<br />

was born in Bogota, Columbia and is himself the<br />

descendent of Jews forcibly converted to Christianity. A<br />

passionate teacher, Rabbi Mejia lives with his wife and<br />

daughter in Oklahoma City and has devoted much of his<br />

energies towards helping other B’nei Anoosim return to<br />

Judaism. He will be joining us over video link to discuss<br />

his own story, and the many successes and challenges<br />

he’s faced in his work.<br />

RABBI GROVER’S SUMMER TALMUD CLASS<br />

This summer Rabbi Grover continues his weekly Shabbat<br />

Talmud class in Tractate Abodah Zarah. The classes are<br />

held in the synagogue one hour prior to Minhah services<br />

on Shabbat. The class is weekly during the months of<br />

June, <strong>July</strong> and August when Rabbi Grover is in town.<br />

YOUTH & YOUNG FAMILIES: HIGH HOLIDAY LEADERS<br />

We are looking for High Holiday youth leaders. Students<br />

HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF BETH TIKVAH<br />

To help shape the future of <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tikvah</strong>, the Transition<br />

Committee is engaging in a series of consultations with our<br />

membership. The first is a survey, which gives you the<br />

chance to express your opinions on everything from<br />

Shabbat services to programming to the role of women in<br />

ritual.<br />

The results will help us to prepare important<br />

recommendations for our Executive and Board. Every<br />

opinion matters. We hope all members will take the time<br />

to complete and return the survey by <strong>July</strong> 15th. You’ll also<br />

have a chance to express your views at town hall meetings<br />

and focus groups, so watch for those announcements.<br />

Beyond these forums, please feel free to share your<br />

thoughts any time with the chairperson of the Transition<br />

Committee, Doug Millstone, at dmillstone@bellnet.ca.<br />

HOWARD ROSE HONOURED AS BETH TIKVAH'S<br />

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR<br />

UJA Federation listed the volunteers representing the<br />

many Jewish organizations in Greater <strong>Toronto</strong>. Howard<br />

Rose, the chair of our House Committee represented <strong>Beth</strong><br />

<strong>Tikvah</strong>. Here is how Howard summarized his role as a<br />

volunteer at <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tikvah</strong>:<br />

"I think it is important to give back to society. What<br />

better way than to do it in your community. I am fortunate<br />

to be able to work with people who are capable and, also<br />

dedicated. This makes volunteering enjoyable as well<br />

rewarding."<br />

We wish Howard a Yishar Koah and much success in<br />

his work on behalf of <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tikvah</strong> and the Jewish<br />

community.<br />

RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR<br />

EATING ALONE<br />

While many religions teach the importance of giving thanks for the food we eat, Judaism is the only religion that<br />

mandates a special formula (called a zimun) when 3 people eat together. Jewish law goes so far as to prohibit the third<br />

person from leaving the meal early so that he might be able to join the other two in the zimun.<br />

In an age where the cult of the individual reigns supreme, Judaism gives us insight into the importance of relating to<br />

God in communion with others. Even a simple prayer of thanksgiving at a meal is elevated, is stronger, is more intense, and<br />

is more meaningful, when friends and family can join together in its recitation.<br />

The further lesson is that when it comes to our sustenance, we’re all interconnected. A bad harvest affects the entire<br />

community just as a national economic downturn will cause more people to go hungry. In that sense, we always sit down to<br />

eat with others; we never eat alone.<br />
