San Diego Woodturners Page 4 May 2011 Annual Woodturner Picnic On May 16th the San Diego Woodturners will welcome summer with their annual picnic to be held at Ken and Pat Roth’s home in Poway. From 10:00am until 2:00pm come enjoy friends, food, and fun. The event will host a wonderful raffle of turnings donated by our members. Now is your chance to add to your collection. We will also tantilize our memnbers with the turning contest this year focusing on “surface embellishments. Bring your family and enjoy the day. Cost is $12 each for addults and children under 12 free. See the member area of SDWT.org for directions to Ken and Pats. Instant Gallery Coloring Class Update In February we were treated to an amazing demo by Joe Fleming on coloring your work. Joe has offered to do a small handson class at his studio for anyone interested in learning more. If you are interested please contact Joe at 858-586-0562 or jtflrming@san.rr.com.
San Diego Woodturners Page 5 May 2011 New Workshops and Updates Our next scheduled workshop is July 17-18 with Molly Winton. Molly will be showing us about pyrography in general and branding specifically. In the workshop we will learn how to create our own brands and how to use them effectively. We will also create some mini-hollow forms or bowls to use for our branding. There are limited spaces left in the workshop so if you are interested contact Sally Ault at sallyault@cox.net ASAP. One you see her magic at the Demo it will be too late to sign up for the class. are designed to teach excellent tool control as well as how to make some great gifts. E-mail: sallyault@cox.net or by phone at (619) 225-1120 We have Cindy Drozda coming to do a demo on October 15th and she will do 1 or 2 two day hands in classes while she is here. The first class dates are October 16/17 and there are a few spaces left. If that class fills and there is enough interest we will do a second 2 day class. I think everyone knows what exquisite work Cindy does and I have been told by a number of people that she is a really good instructor. We will learn how to make her trademark finial boxes. The techniques she will teach us can be used for many different projects. I for one need more finial guidance and she is the master at finials. Please contact Sally if you are interested in this workshop. Our last workshop for the year will be Nick Cook. Nick was in San Diego for a demo a few years ago and is going to be in the area in November. We are fortunate to get him to come to San Diego and do a workshop. The workshop on November 8/9 has already filled. We can add a second workshop if there is enough interest. Because Nick is very flexible we may be able to allow people to come 1 day or 2 if we add a second workshop. Please let me know if you are interested and if so how many days. Once I have enough information I will contact those on the list to confirm days. Nick does many different types of projects and all San Diego County Fair is coming! The San Diego fair will start June 10 th through July 4 th so it’s time to turn out your best. Check your calendar and help us out by signing up. We will have someone there to get you started with a lesson or two if you’ve never turned tops before. We prefer to have two people in the morning and two in the afternoon each day the fair is open.
