Greetings all…
It’s that time again --- where
does the time go??? I hope you
all had a joyful and enriching
Passover/Easter Season and
are ready to tackle the summer
challenges.
We enjoyed an inspirational
visit from Michael Mocho,
where many basic, advanced,
and original techniques were
covered. We look forward to
his influence showing up on
some of the embellished entries
in “the” Picnic Turning Contest.
Thanks, Michael…
Speaking of picnics --- Don’t
forget to bring your families,
your appetites, your chairs,
a raffle turning, your contest
entry, and your list of friends to
whom you sold raffle chances.
New Workshops and Updates
Our next scheduled workshop is July 17-18 with
Molly Winton. Molly will be showing us about
pyrography in general and branding specifically.
In the workshop we will learn how to create our
own brands and how to use them effectively. We
will also create some mini-hollow forms or bowls
to use for our branding. There are limited spaces
left in the workshop so if you are interested contact
Sally Ault at sallyault@cox.net ASAP. One you
see her magic at the Demo it will be too late to sign
up for the class.
are designed to teach excellent tool control as well
as how to make some great gifts. Take a look at
www.nickcookwoodturner.com and see the many
cool things Nick specializes in.
sign-up or for more
information. E-mail:
We have Cindy Drozda coming to do a demo on
October 15th and she will do 1 or 2 two day hands
in classes while she is here. The first class dates
are October 16/17 and there are a few spaces left.
If that class fills and there is enough interest we
will do a second 2 day class.
I think everyone knows what exquisite work Cindy
does and I have been told by a number of people
that she is a really good instructor. We will learn
how to make her trademark finial boxes. The
techniques she will teach us can be used for many
different projects. I for one need more finial guidance
and she is the master at finials.
Please contact Sally if you are interested in this
workshop.
Our last workshop for the year will be Nick Cook.
Nick was in San Diego for a demo a few years ago
and is going to be in the area in November. We
are fortunate to get him to come to San Diego and
do a workshop. The workshop on November 8/9
has already filled. We can add a second workshop
if there is enough interest. Because Nick is very
flexible we may be able to allow people to come 1
day or 2 if we add a second workshop. Please let
me know if you are interested and if so how many
days. Once I have enough information I will contact
those on the list to confirm days.
Nick does many different types of projects and all
Michael Mocho Wows Woodturners!
Anyone who was at the April 16 demo by Michael Mocho went away impressed. Michael makes things look
so easy. He discussed how stance and body movements affect your cut. He showed us the dynamics of making
a clean accurate cut. We learned lots of wonderful tricks for making accurate tenons and making accurate
connections between parts and how to put several parts together to make a unique piece.
Michael showed us how to create textures using any tool as well as with the Sorby texturing and spiraling
tool. We saw his simple and effective jig for fluting and I expect to see some beautiful pieces with surface
embellishments and fluting in the Instant gallery.
We also got to see Michael’s terrific tool stand. Be on the lookout for versions of the stand showing up in
members shops!
much. Only seeing it used in
person and practice will teach
one on how to use it. It is best
used on hard wood like maple or
Mike showed off his tool cart.
Everyone was taking pictures of
it and some also were measuring
it with plans to make their own.
Mike demonstrated chatter work
Sorby Texturing tool. This tool
has a long learning curve and
he still does not consider himself
an expert, all though he has
been working with it for several
using the skew chisel. Move the
tool rest away from the work
and point the skew below center.
Mike then demonstrated the
years.. The instructions that
come with the tool and Sorby’s
online video don’t really help
other fine & hard grain woods.
It can be used on both end grain
and side grain. The tool comes
(Continued on page 9)

with 4 cutters and Mike finds
that the coarse wheel is too
coarse to use. He prefers to use
the medium wheel.
his collection.
Mike then continued with showing
off his fluting jig that uses a
trim router attached to a support
frame and either supported by a
platform attached to the banjo
via a metal tool post or a structure
that sits & rides on the lathe
Mike continued with showing
sanding techniques that removed
material from a turning that
changed the exterior appearance
of the turning. Mike likes
the variable speed feature of
the lathe to control the material
being removed. Almost any
stationary sanding machine only
has two speeds and that is “off”
and “too fast!”
Use of a mdf disc attached to the
headstock.
A home-made belt sander made
from a wood form supported
in the banjo’s tool post with a
home-made drum sander made
from a wood dowel with vinyl
tubing slid over it. The wood
form has graphite sheet used on
belt sanders attached to absorb
bed. Indexing is done either with
the index wheel incorporated
in with the lathe or with a purchased
index wheel that fits onto
the headstock spindle.
He only did a couple passes with
the router to show the process.
This piece was a sample from
A home-made drum sander made
from a wood dowel with vinyl
tubing slid over it. PSA sandpaper
or sandpaper attached with
3M 77 spray on adhesive.
the friction & heat developed
while the belt is running. Too
help in belt tracking the headstock
drum is slightly crowned
he adjusts the banjo to control
tension & tracking.
Kingspor’s the graphite sheet
widths by 1yd. lengths.
Michael Mocho Classes
14 members of the San Diego Woodturners had the privilege of working
one on one with Michael Mocho at 2 two day workshops. Everyone
was challenged to learn to use the skew correctly and lots of
progress was made with the tool that many are really afraid of. We
discovered that the finish off the skew really needs no sanding and
when done right is not at all scary.
Michael also showed everyone how any tool can be a chatter tool…on
purpose! We learned to make great textures with most of the tools in
our bags. We found out how to create accurately fitted pieces to fit together…like
adding a textured inset into a box lid or a making a tenon
on a finial that perfectly fits into a lid.
Micheal demystified the Sorby texturing and spiraling tool so watch
for pieces with wonderful details in the instant gallery in the future.
We were all extremely impressed by what a great (and patient) instructor
Michael is. All of us made some great strides in tool skills during
the workshop.

Sorby Texturing Tool (as demonstrated
by Michael Mocho at
the last meeting). I am asking
$140.00 for it. Three of the four
Oliver 167 Lathe for sale
This is a heavy-duty lathe of
the type often used in high
school shop classes. Lathe is
in good condition, although
it could use a paint job. The
variable speed Reeves drive
works perfectly and bearings
are good & tight. The
power switch was modified
to allow motor reversing. I
replaced the spindle (1” x 8
tpi) and motor with a single
phase. Also added a wooden “ballast box” to stabilize the lathe when
turning large objects.
Specifications:
Motor is 1 hp 110/220V, currently
wired for 220v.
Maximum turning radius: 9 ¾”
GOT WOOD?
The wood pile is growing! Tom and I met with the arborist April 5. The organization includes 150 tree
trimmers from San Diego county. “Stumpy” and “Splinter” gave them information about SDWT and
told them the kinds of wood most desired by woodturners. We displayed some of our turnings from local
wood. Tom explained how to saw the trees to preserve the best turning blanks. The presentation was well
received and our contact information and club information was to be included in their newsletter.Arborist
from SD City parks and UCSD have called us to pick up wood from a very large eucalyptus and a large
Black Acacia ,and we have olive to be picked up at Balboa.
Thanks to Tom Cummings for delivering two truck loads of his private stash and to Al Ochert who delivered
a load of Myoporum, camphor and plum. Russ Filbeck brought a truck load of Victorian Box to
the last meeting. I also picked up a load of Weeping Elm. The tree had died so the wood is dry and very
hard. Thanks to Dan White who has offered a lot to store wood if we get more than we can handle at Nottingham.
I think we have as much good wood as we have ever had. There are two stacks beside the trailer
and still a lot of good wood inside the trailer. A work day needs to be scheduled to organize what is in the
trailer and to cut up, label, and store what is outside. Stop by the trailer and take a look. We will try to
answer questions and help you select the right wood for your next project. Wood prices are 25 cents per
pound. All proceeds go to the club.
