RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
USHPIZIN
If you're like most people, when you hear the word "Sukkot," you're thinking of the lulav and etrog, and eating in
the sukkah. But there is another lesser-known ritual that forms an important part of the Sukkot observance. It's called
the Ushpizin.
The word Ushpizin comes from the Latin hospes, meaning guests. Ushpizin is a special invitation that we read out
just as we sit down to enjoy the holiday meal. The invitation is addressed to our special guests: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David.
What is the lesson of this strange invitation? The Rebbe of Kotzk was once asked the same question. This week I
share his answer with the hope that it will inspire deeper introspection about the way we perceive reality.
Said the Rebbe: "I don't actually see the Ushpizin, but I believe they are present in my Sukkah. And believing is
greater than seeing. Emuna (faith) itself creates a reality more powerful than anything that can be perceived with the
physical eye."
