WANT TO
BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
You May Want to Hang Out
with One First!
Written by Kathleen C Lanza
If there’s one thing that buying a business opportunity, franchise or any
other proven business model has in its favor, it’s the fact that you’re
surrounded, or at the very least have access to, other entrepreneurs
who have some knowledge you might want and need and that they are
willing to share. Maybe it’s no wonder then that going the establishedtrack-record
route has so much appeal for so many.
According to a new Kauffman Foundation study, that’s not surprising. In
fact, its primary contention is that entrepreneurship is at the very least
somewhat “contagious.” That’s right, the study’s authors write, “The entrepreneurial
instinct is, like many human behaviors, imitative. “
Citing many instances where humans become heavily influenced by what
they observe others doing as the basic premise behind their theory, it
turns out that there is a strong statistical likelihood that you’re more likely
to become an entrepreneur if you know one. Observe others doing what
you’d like to be doing successfully, the authors say, and odds are tipped in
your favor that you’re an entrepreneur in the making.
“While we can’t determine specific causality, the association between
knowing an entrepreneur and being one was significant and large,” the
study found. Additionally and perhaps even more interestingly, men were
more likely than women to become entrepreneurs if they knew entrepreneurs.
All of this speaks to a concept that we here at BusinessOpportunity.com
have driven home many times before…having a mentor when you’re
starting out in business—someone who’s been there, done that—is really
important. But the expert advice that a mentor can provide is only
one of the many benefits that can come from making a concerted effort
to seek help from those who have walked the walk.
Here are some others to consider:
They’ll Tell It to You Straight
Buying a home-based or other business opportunity or small business
is never smooth sailing at first, and having someone there to
tell you when you’re doing things the hard way or the wrong way
can save you a lot of time and money. Sometimes we don’t always
want to hear what we need to, but in business it’s crucial to remain
open, especially when the counselor is someone you respect and
know you can trust.
They Know the People You’ll Want
and Need to Know
Networking is a crucial part of startup and overall business opportunity
or other small business ownership success, whether it’s to find
the right partners, vendors, consultants or even experts to round
out your team. Mentors who already have been successful in business
for themselves have the contacts ready-made that you may
very well want and need to get things going and keep growing over
time.
Sometimes we don’t
always want to hear
what we need to, but in
business it’s crucial to
remain open
They May Offer a Complementary
Skill Set
No two entrepreneurs are exactly alike, so chances are that your
small business mentor will have some expertise and innate skills
that you simply don’t. When you’re looking for the right one, that
may be something you want to consider. Looking for someone who
isn’t just like you may be a plus. Combined you may just make an
unbeatable team, and finally….
5 MARKETING TIPS YOU
AN IMPLEMENT TODAY
forget
google
encourage
reviews
go
local
Many businesses immediately
jump to Google to get moving
with their Internet marketing
plan; and while Google Local is a
great tool, don’t forget that Bing
and Yahoo! have their own local
search platforms. So, once
you’re done verifying your listing
at Google Local, do the same at
Bing Local and Yahoo! Local.
Claim your listing, ensure all the
information is accurate and keep
it updated if you change
anything.
Review websites like Yelp allow
your customers and clients to
give direct feedback about your
business to the public, which can
be great thing. However, it’s
important to know that bringing
up or getting rid of a bad review
once it’s out there is next to
impossible. Encourage your
customers to write reviews on
their positive experiences online
so that one bad review is a little
fish in a sea of satisfied clients.
Your local Chamber of
Commerce gives you credibility,
provides a direct connection to
other local businesses and
offers you the chance to
network with members of your
community. While this type of
marketing will come with a price
tag, it’s far less expensive than
traditional advertising. Contact
your local Chamber and request
membership information.
SOCIAL
MEDIA
YOUR
AUDIENCE
Even if you have no experience
and are not sure where to start,
it’s important to get your page
online as soon as possible. Then
you can come back later to build
the page out more fully and
maintain it on a regular basis.
Social media is an excellent and
affordable way to tap into a
large potential network.
Word of mouth is still one of the
best ways to grow your
business. Find out where your
audience is and go to them,
whether that’s visiting local
organizations or groups or
simply handing out your
business card to every person
that you meet. Don’t be
stingy—give those business
cards out like they’re candy
usiness card
BASICS
When you own a home-based business opportunity or any other small business, networking with
others and getting yourself out there is more often than not a key part of your overall marketing
strategy. Let’s put it this way...if it isn’t, it should be.
Written by Kathleen C Lanza
After all, it’s a fact that whether or not you leave a good and memorable impression can make or
break you, so having a great business card as a leave-behind is still a necessity. Like it or not, it
remains one of the best and most affordable marketing tools out there. Here are some tips:
1
Quality counts
While all the more affordable and
even free DIY business card options
currently available online are convenient,
they don’t always present
well. In fact, they can look downright
cheap. Hey, you get what you pay
for, right? Trouble is that cheap may
not be the image you’re looking to
portray, so beware! Penny wise,
pound foolish is a biggie when it
comes to business cards.
2
Simple is best
Name, company, title, phone number
and email address are what
matters most, and even too many
phone numbers is overkill. Don’t
make a prospective customer track
you down by playing phone roulette.
In almost all cases, fax numbers
are unnecessary, and even a street
address is only relevant for some
industries anymore.
3
But…some extras are
worth a mention
If you’ve got a great website that is
truly informative, it might be worth
taking up some precious real estate
on your card, likewise if you have
one or two workable social media
links where you know there’s real
payoff potential. But keep in mind
that less is more, so if just one URL
will get someone to where they can
access all of it, that’s even better.
4
Make visuals count
If your logo is original and says a lot
about what you do or your brand,
then use it. If it’s just for looks and
it’s crowding out everything else
on what is already a small palette,
skip it. Depending on the industry, a
picture of the individual and/or what
that person is selling can be effective.
Whatever you do, avoid clip art;
it screams chintzy.
