RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
And Sarah Laughed …
At an advanced age, the matriarch Sarah hears that after years of childlessness, she will give birth to a son. Upon hearing
the news, Sarah laughs, and rouses God’s anger. But why does she laugh?
Though most traditional commentaries attribute Sarah’s laughter to her lack of faith, that conclusion seems most unlikely.
After all, this is a woman who has been in harm’s way before and God always came to her rescue.
One careful reader proposes that Sarah is laughing because she does not see herself as important in God’s vision. Her
inability to conceive has given her an “insignificance complex” along with feelings of hopelessness and abandon. Challenged
to think of herself differently, she laughs at the preposterous idea.
Sarah’s sin may not have been that she lacked faith in God, but that she lost faith in herself. We too are called, above all, to
believe in the purposefulness of our lives, and only then will we achieve greatness.
