RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
Let us Remember
It is said that on the ninth day of the month of Av, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, Napoleon
Bonaparte was walking in the Jewish quarter of Paris. As his entourage passed a synagogue he heard wailing
and crying coming from within. He sent an aide to inquire as to what had happened. The aide returned and told
Napoleon that the Jews were in mourning over the loss of their Temple.
Napoleon was indignant. “Why was I not informed? When did this happen? Which Temple?” The aide
responded, “They lost their Temple in Jerusalem on this date 1,650 years ago.” Napoleon stood in silence and
then said, “Certainly a people which has mourned the loss of their Temple for so long will survive to see it
rebuilt!”
Some 70 years later, our people are still struggling to rebuild what we have lost since the Shoah.
Compounded by problems of disinterest and assimilation only serve to reinforce Napoleon’s prophecy. The
potential to build a brighter future depends on our gathering together to mourn. This Yom Hashoah, and every
Yom Hashoah, let us remember.
