RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
The Second Commandment
“Do not make for yourself an idol,” is the second of the ten commandments. It’s strange that the prohibition here is not worshipping an idol, but
creating one. You would think that God would be most concerned with the former.
Reb Aharon of Karlin had a beautiful answer to this question. He taught his Hasidim to read this commandment not as a prohibition against
making an idol, but against making an idol out of yourself. The correct translation is, “do not make of yourself an idol.”
An idol is something that has no identity of its own. Its shape, its existence and its material were all fashioned by others. We so easily fall into
this same trap when we mould ourselves to fit the expectations of others. This is what the second commandment is addressing. To have integrity is
to affirm every day that we are the creations of God, and God alone.
