SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE - BAGS FOR BEDS
Haiti still has not recovered from their last devastating
hurricane and people are living in abysmal conditions
sleeping on the bare ground. Large outer milk bags,
those not made from recyclable materials, are used to
create sleeping mats. You can help by simply bringing
your cleaned large milk bags to the synagogue and
placing them in the armoire beside the office. This will
ensure that the bags will be converted into much-needed
(and appreciated) items instead of ending up polluting
our lands and oceans.
RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
A SENSE OF GESHMACK
Though it sounds like an insult, the Yiddish word geshmack is best translated as tasty or delicious. It's interesting that in
some circles, the word has come to be associated with Torah study. A gratifying class or inspirational teaching can bring delight
that you can almost taste.
Similarly, when children were first taken to cheder, the teacher would let them lick honey off the letters of the aleph-bet to
show the sweetness of Jewish learning.
The purpose of this association is not only to encourage study. In a world full of loneliness, tragedy, and depression, a sense
of the sweet is often hard to find. And so our tradition, by cultivating that sense, makes it readily at our disposal. And so the
poet Dunn wrote:
Often a sweetness comes
as if on loan, stays just long enough
to make sense of what it means to be alive,
then returns to its dark
source. As for me, I don't care
where it's been, or what bitter road
it's traveled
to come so far, to taste so good.
