Study session with Rabbi Markose followed by dessert
different in our day?” To say “I am sorry” doesn’t mean the
same thing today as it did 50 years ago. Or does it? This year,
on the evening of Selihot, Rabbi Howard Markose will explore
the elements of the Jewish concept of Teshuvah (repentence)
which are timeless, and which elements have changed in their
relevance over the years. He hopes to share the speaker’s
RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
THE ROBBED THAT SMILES
When the twelve scouts come back from their tour of the promised land, ten of them report back saying, "we looked
like grasshoppers to ourselves, and so we must have looked to them."
The careful choice of words reveals something more than just an observed discrepancy in physical stature between the
Israelites and the Canaanites. They hint at the important idea that the way we see ourselves influences the way others see
us. If we see ourselves as grasshoppers, then indeed that's how other's will see us.
What this teaches is that the attitudes we have when confronted with difficulty are much more than coping
mechanisms. They also influence those around us and ease or worsen the burden of what we face. Keep in mind
Shakespeare's famous adage:
"The robbed that smiles steals something from the thief,
He robs himself that spends a bootless grief."
