BETH TIKVAH FOOD DRIVE, Sunday, June 12 th
WE HAVE THE CHOICE--TO GIVE OR NOT TO GIVE.
WHAT CHOICE DOES A HUNGRY PERSON HAVE?
The decision to give is ours and ours alone. Each
of us is free to decide how often and how much to
donate and to which organizations, and even whether
to donate or not. Those who are needy and hungry
have fewer options: where to get the least expensive,
most filling food that can be stretched over several
meals.
If you are called to donate on June 12th please
consider saying yes even if you donated last fall. If
you aren't called but would like to contribute, we
would be delighted to pick up your parcel(s) or to take
your cheque. If your decision is not to donate this
time, let's try for next fall, shall we?
To contact us please phone 416 221 3433 ext 356
RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
THE SYMBOLIC
Our Jewish festivals are full of symbols. On Passover, it's matzah. On Sukkot, it's the sukkah. But what is the symbol of
Shavuot? While cheese blintzes may be a prominent symbol of the holiday for Ashkenazi Jews, dairy delights don't seem to
equate with the powerful rituals of other holidays.
Consider that most Jewish holidays commemorate a historical event. Passover commemorates the exodus from Egypt and
Sukkot God's protection in the wilderness. Shavuot proves to be the exception. While many assume that Shavuot is about the
past, about the giving of the Torah many centuries ago, its lack of any powerful religious symbol sends a different message.
On Shavuot, we don’t emphasize God giving the Torah, but the Jewish people receiving the Torah. Reception is not a
historical event, but an everyday occurrence in the life of the Jew. And so in our festival observance, we express our gratitude
for the gift of Torah and are reminded that the most important gifts we receive are not necessarily visible to the eye.
