UJA’S WALK WITH ISRAEL – Sunday, May 26 th at 9:00am. Coronation Park, Rain or Shine.
RABBI GROVER’S TORAH ON TOUR
The Main Thing
Though the motives for the Boston terror attack remain murky, it’s curious that it occurred on Yom
Hazikaron, Israel’s national day for the commemoration of fallen soldiers and victims of terror. There may be
no connection between the two events whatsoever, but the parallel reminds us of the shared struggle on our
shores and in Israel to preserve liberty against in the face of those seeking to harm us.
As Israelis know well, terrorism threatens not only our physical security, but also our way of life. Though it
seems trivial, marathons are part of that way of life. In them we celebrate human achievement and the very
worthy causes that drive us to participate in them. We literally shut down major cities because of our respect
for these events.
Succumbing to our worries, marathons will disappear or become so security-laden, that participants will
stop attending. This would only add tragedy to tragedy. The world is a dangerous place, but as the rabbi of
Bratslav taught, “the main thing to recall is not to be ruled by our fears.”
