Ringwood Movie Makers Inc
Ringwood Movie Makers is an award winning group of amateur enthusiasts who enjoy and help each other to make
and screen movies. It is situated in the east of Melbourne near the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Established
over 50 years ago, the club has progressed through the technologies of film, video, and has now entered the digital
era, where computers are an essential part of the editing process. The club meets on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each
month in the Ringwood East Senior Citizens Centre at 8pm. People, outside the club, who are interested in making
movies are most welcome to attend a meeting.
Competitions
Members are assisted with regular technical talks as well as the production of group movies and regular quarterly
competitions. The club also competes in the Victoria Competition.
Below you can see Club President Ron Fry presenting June Furness with a Victoria Competition award for popular
vote winner and second prize for her movie of Camargue in the South of France. This movie has a brilliant sound
track with music by Colin Prohasky and spectacular shots showing flamingos slowly marching on their long spindly
legs in perfect time to the beat of the music.
June's award follows previous Victoria Competition awards won by Norm Tillack for his intriguing movie “The
Amish of Lancaster County” and a year earlier by Ron Fry for “The Eden Project”. Individual members often enter
other competitions – both local and international, and have had pleasing results over the years.
Services to the Community
As a community service, Club members now have 220 movies on DVD, (ever increasing), prepared by Stuart and
Shirley Walker which they screen free of charge to community groups and aged care facilities. Maroondah City
Council at their Australia Day celebrations awarded the club “Community Event of the Year” in recognition of
these long term community contributions.
Club members co-operated with Monkami (a centre for intellectually handicapped people), filming and editing two
highly enjoyable productions of “Titanic”.
Other Points
In addition to regular meetings dealing with technical topics
Vice President Tony King has kept us up to date with “Tony's
Ten Minute Tech Talks”. His development of the Club website
www.ringwoodvideo.org.au has enabled a number of prospective
members and other Clubs to contact us. One result of those
contacts has been an exchange of movies between us and Edinburgh
Cine and Video Society, Adelaide Film Club, and Long
Island Movie Makers of New York.
A historic film made by Fred Haering "Hugo's Gold" has been
screened several times on TV Channel 31. It is an intriguing
story of the rediscovery of gold coins hidden in a cellar wall in
Israel during WW2. The coins were returned to the now 100
year old owner who lives in Melbourne.
