Golf Courses
in the West of Ireland
There is a sense of wildness about the West of Ireland.
Its coastline has weathered millions of years of onslaught from
the Atlantic Ocean and the results are visible. Rugged and wild,
it has the raw beauty of a rocky terrain, but Mother Nature has
compensated and redressed the balance, adding incredibly
beautiful mountain and seascapes which add a unique colour
and richness.
The inland areas are rich in meadowlands, lush hedgerows and
roadside banks of fuchsia. The coast, a maze of tiny walled
fields, is marked by white sandy bays and natural dunes with
a turquoise-coloured sea.
Golf is simply a way of life in the West. A diverse range of
18-hole links and parkland courses reflect all the great traditions
of the game. Connemara, Carne and Westport stand high on
the list of Ireland’s championship courses, but there are more
than 20 courses to choose from, each one offering a unique
experience.
The temperate climate allows Golf to be played all year round
in the West of Ireland. The main summer season runs from April
to October, but the exhilaration of winter golf is a special
experience. But that’s not all. You will discover that there is an
engaging quirkiness about the way the game is played in the
West. Golfers will be eager to engage you in their sense of the
game and ask you ‘what are ye havin’ in the 19th. Go with it,
relax and enjoy – in the West of Ireland, golf is both exciting
and different and, in a word, SUPERB.
Ballina Golf Club
Ballinrobe Golf Club
Bearna Golf Club
Carne Golf Links
Claremorris Golf Club
Connemara Championship Links
Ballina Golf Club in Co Mayo offers one of the most scenic
18-hole parkland courses in the West of Ireland. It is
situated in the heart of the unspoiled Moy Valley region,
an area of great natural beauty, and only minutes from
Ballina Town centre.
The specifications of the lush fairways and manicured
greens, guarded by water hazards and artful bunkers create
an interesting, testing, and fair golf course. The 5,933
metre, par 71, course is in an ideal setting offering the
golfer variety, challenge, and enjoyable golf.
The clubhouse offers full bar and restaurant facilities.
Green fee concessions are available for groups or societies.
Ballinrobe Golf Club’s location on a 300 acre estate is an idyllic
setting for such a magnificent championship course. The 7,000
yard, par 73, course was laid out and designed by well known
architect Eddie Hackett and the contoured greens, which are
80% sand-based, are playable all year round. This inland course
is characterised by lakes at seven of its 18 holes and is laid out
to championship standard. It is set in medieval surroundings
with a 13th century Tower House situated next to the 10th tee
box. The course with its scenic parkland area, is one which will
offer a challenge to any golfer with its mature trees, manmade
lakes, elaborates fairways and traditional stone walls.
World-renowned golfer, Padraig Harrington recently described
Ballinrobe Golf Club as ‘the finest championship golf course in
the West of Ireland’.
Additional facilities include 12 bay floodlit driving range, practice
areas and pro shop.
Set amidst the celebrated beauty of the West of Ireland
landscape on the fringe of Connemara, and enjoying
commanding views of Galway Bay, the Burren, the Aran
Islands and rugged hinterlands, Bearna Golf course is already
being hailed as one of Ireland's finest. The inspired creativity
of its designer, R.J Browne, in the siting of tees and sandbased
greens throughout more than 100 hectares of unique
countryside has resulted in generously proportioned fairways,
many elevated tee-boxes, and some splendid carries. Water
comes into play at thirteen of the eighteen holes, each one
boasting unique features, and the final four holes provide a
spectacular finish.
The Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant have fabulous views of
the course and surrounding countryside.
Carne Golf Links lies in magnificent unspoiled sand dunes
overlooking Blacksod Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean near
Belmullet, Co Mayo. It was the last links course to be designed
by the late Eddie Hackett and it is now believed by many who
have played it to be his greatest challenge.
The building of Carne has caused little disturbance to this wild
and ancient landscape. Tees and greens occurred naturally and
very little earth moving was involved in the course construction.
There are some breathtaking views over the Atlantic and the
legendary islands of Inis Glóire and Inis Géidhe. The course is
challenging in its 6,120 meters and is links at its wild and very
best.
In 2005, Carne Golf Links was voted the IGTOA Course of the
Year, and no. 28 in the world by Golf World magazine.
‘Although this is really a hidden gem and it doesn’t enjoy the
sort of reputation of say a Ballybunion, the dunes here make
those at Ballybunion look like small hillocks’ - Golf World, Nov.
2005
Designed in 1927 by Tom Craddock, this 18 hole parklands
course is a spectacular par 73 layout. It measures 6,143
metres and lies in an idyllic setting with mature oak, ash
and elm trees a feature on many holes.
It is situated in the heart of the West, midway between
Galway and Sligo near the town of Claremorris.
The signature par 4 hole, the 6th, requires a long accurate
drive to a well-bunkered fairway leaving a mid iron to an
elevated green. It is fully deserving of its stroke index 1,
and a par here is well-earned.
Golfers of all abilities will enjoy this true test of golf and
afterwards relax in a modern and newly refurbished
clubhouse with full bar and catering facilities.
Designed by Eddie Hackett, Connemara Golf Links is a 27-
hole traditional links course situated between the Twelve
Bens Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a 72 par course
measuring over 7,000 yards. The view of the ocean is
breathtaking, and sightings of swans, Connemara ponies,
and even a castle will inspire you. Wind and rainbows are
a speciality and all part of the magic of this adventurous
course.
Close to Clifden town, known as the capital of Connemara,
this course on the edge of Europe promises a memorable
and rewarding experience.
The clubhouse offers full bar and restaurant facilities with
spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.
‘If there were a course like this on the west coast of England,
it would surely host the British Open’
Westport Golf Club
Westport Golf Club is a golfing oasis in the colourful town of
Westport on the West coast of Ireland. The setting is spectacular
and Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain, seems to follow
you everywhere on the course.
The 18-hole championship course was designed by Fred
Hawtree, designer of the new course at St. Andrews. It was
built on part of the Sligo estate. On first viewing of the site,
Hawtree commented ‘ the nature of the terrain, part inland
and part seaside, the panorama which it commands and its
considerable golfing virtues make it uniquely attractive and
memorable’.
Lush, rolling hills vary from gentle inclines to mini mountains
to provide an outstanding championship test. There is a range
of long and short par 3s and 4s, and the 12th and 15th, in
particular, call for exceptional skills.
Full bar and restaurant facilities are available and overlook the
course.
