Editorial
Living with the crisis
There is no doubt that the term ‘crises’ is among the
most frequently mentioned in the news these days. And
it will probably remain in the headlines for the months
and years to come. But instead of complaining, the time
has come to face up to this crisis, find ways of taming
it and winning it over, even if at times it is not easily
achieved.
This new economic situation can however provide new
opportunities, both for us and our clients as is always
the case in troubled times which announce extensive
economic change. But one thing is for sure, whatever
happens, the Earth will not stop turning; so it would be
wise to adapt to the new or even unprecedented
situations and try to take advantage of them.
This is the philosophy we apply every day. The crisis
has not stopped our company from pursuing its growth
objectives and to present a positive outlook to our
clients and the market. A few examples : the creation
of a second brand, MAX Trailer, which we discuss in
more detail in this issue, or the novelties we have on
show at the IAA trade fair, such as the Variomax and
the Gigamax Light and the 2nd generation Twin Axle.
Without forgetting the major efforts undertaken that
have enabled the development of an integrated
modular concept for our pendelaxles.
Alain Faymonville
MAX TRAILER
A standard quality
The Faymonville group has decided to become even more involved in the ‘lighter
specialist haulage’ market. To this end, a new brand, named MAX Trailer, has been
created along with a new company : MAX Trailer Distribution. The main features of
this new brand? The standardization of the trailers, yet with the same quality as the
Faymonville range and at very competitive prices. Enough to seduce the construction
and haulage companies which represent its target clients.
The MAX Trailer vehicles are designed for what
might be termed ‘lighter specialist haulage’ missions.
An activity that is mainly performed by construction
and haulage companies. One thing must
however be made quite clear : by ‘lighter specialist
haulage’ one is here referring to the displacement
of loads of up to 45 tons and requiring
a technically adapted trailer.
A completely separate brand
The two distinctive features of the MAX Trailer
range are its standardization and quality as is
underlined by Alain Faymonville, the company’s
Managing Director : « The trailers of the
MAX Trailer range are standardized, designed
and conceived with a guaranteed quality level.
Soon, the MAX Trailers
will be built in
the Polish factory.
The standardization of the components, such as the
ramps for example, enables the client to benefit
from a higher level of quality in terms of materials
and product finish. »
What’s more the MAX Trailer brand further
expands the Faymonville group’s offer to new
products : centre-axles trailers and drawbar
trailers.
MAX Trailer Distribution offers products which are
provided with its own identity distinct from that of
Faymonville, as we are told by Mario Faymonville,
head of sales for the MAX Trailer brand :
« MAX Trailer is the group’s second product line
and it is distributed by MAX Trailer Distribution, a
branch of the Faymonville group which has its
own marketing strategy. »
Premium quality
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
In concrete terms, the Faymonville brand, is of a
premium quality and offers a very broad range
of products and a high degree of sophistication,
while the MAX Trailer brand offers a standar dized
product, but with the same quality levels. « It is
also worth pointing out that this is the first time in
a decade that a new brand appears on the
market and what’s more is being launched throughout
the whole of Europe. And this at a time which
has seen and is still seeing many manufacturers disappear
as they were not able to cut costs nor to
focus on standardization or to continue guaranteeing
top quality », Alain Faymonville is quick
to point out.
A dedicated sales network
MAX Trailers are distributed through a network of dealers. At first the job is handled by the current
Faymonville dealer network. During the coming months however this network will be reinforced by a
number of new dealers. In order to become a MAX Trailer dealer, it is necessary to satisfy a certain
number of conditions, and most significantly be well established in ones region. The distributor must
have a direct contact with the clients and be responsible for guiding them in their choices. If the client
requires a more sophisticated trailer with special options or particular features, then the dealer will
point them towards the Faymonville product line.
The MAX Trailer range is specially conceived to be sold through a dealer network. In order to
optimize transportation, the trailers can be shipped without the ramps fitted. The dealers can stock
up with ramps and other accessories, and offer them to the buyer at a later stage. The great choice
of standard options is another feature of the MAX Trailer range.
This is in line with a rationalisation process which follows the example of what is being done in the
curtainsiders industry.
A configuration tool is available on the brand’s internet site (www.maxtrailer.eu). The client
can select the preferred configuration for their trailer and the order will then be confirmed by the
dealer.
A COMPLETE OFFER
The MAX Trailer offer includes the following models :
3 axle stepframe semi-trailer
3 axle extendable stepframe semi-trailer
3 axle stepframe semi-trailers with a lifting and lowering loading
platform
3 axle stepframe semi-trailer with wheel recess
3 axle flatbed semi-trailer
3 axle extendable flatbed semi-trailer
4 axle stepframe semi-trailer
4 axle extendable stepframe semi-trailer
3 axle drawbar trailer with centre-axles and ramps
3 and 4 axle drawbar trailer with ramps
This range may be extended in the future based on market demand.
One product line, twelve models
Before the end of 2012, the MAX Trailer range will include a dozen
or so models. The core of the range will comprise 3 and 4 axle
semi-trailers, with lowbeds or flatbeds, which should cover almost
all requirements of its target clients. The MAX Trailers are equipped
with self-steering axles or fix axles.
The MAX Trailer range is to be marketed throughout Europe, although
a few inroads outside Europe are not to be ruled out, such as North
Africa for example.
We would also like to add that all the MAX Trailer vehicles are
granted with an European certification. Their dimensions comply with
European transportation regulations, that is to say a total convoy
length not exceeding 16,500 mm and a total maximum width of
2,550 mm.
End of June, just 4 months after
the launch of the MAX Trailer
range, over 200 units have
already found purchasers.
Produced in Poland, a rational choice
If, at first, the MAX Trailer production will be taken on by the
Luxembourgish factory in Lentzweiler, it will soon be moved to
Faymonville Polska, the Polish factory located near Goleniow. Once
it reaches full capacity, the production of MAX Trailer vehicles
should be around 600 units per year using a new modular assembly
line which may double or even triple its production capacity if
needed.
How can one guarantee a high quality level at a price calculated
down to the last penny? Alain Faymonville : « By achieving savings
at different levels compared to a non standard vehicle. For a start
from a logistics point of view by optimizing transportation and
setting up an assembly line similar to that of curtainsiders where the
various elements are all directly available at the assembly line.
In addition, the certification is granted by trailer model and no
longer per vehicle. And the standardization of the components also
P. 05
enables optimization of the supply chain. Finally, the manufacture
and final assembly being carried out in Poland also provides an
additional competitive edge.
The very concept of the MAX Trailer requires the reduction and the
optimization of all production processes. Plus, once the model has
been developed, it no longer has to be reviewed by the technical
department, unlike the majority of the Faymonville trailers which
are regularly adapted to suit the specific demands of the clients. After
all the MAX Trailer is based on the standardization of components
and, consequently, of the product as a whole.
This concept enables us to offer a product to a highly competitive
price that satisfies the essential needs of our clients, who can still
benefit from our prized Faymonville quality. »
An offer which, clearly, has already seduced a number of clients seeing
that at the time of writing this article over 200 MAX Trailer
units have already been sold since the launch of the brand in March
of 2012.
The MAX Trailer products have been granted European certification. But further details must be provided on this count: the
certification has not only been granted to the products but also to the production process. The supervision and production processes
are particularly important and are audited in order to ensure compliance with the processes and the quality control systems included
in European regulations.
MEGAMAX 2+4
Designed for the haulage of concrete
wind tower sections
Ever higher. This is not just an Olympic motto, but also a
trend in the domain of wind turbines. Large sized wind
turbines can be made out of steel or hybrid that is to say
with a concrete and steel base topped by a steel structure.
To ship these concrete towers, Faymonville has developed
an optimal technical solution, the Megamax 2+4 low
loader.
The large sized ‘onshore’ wind turbines – whose generators generally
reach powers up to 3.5 MW – are sprouting up pretty much all
over the world. To achieve this kind of power, the installations are
becoming increasingly imposing. The blades are growing longer and
currently stand at 65 metres. The hub height can be up to 150 metres
depending on the manufacturer.
Why are we seeing the appearance of higher
and higher wind turbines? Simply because the
higher the wind turbine the greater its power output.
Above 100 metres, the average wind speed
increases and thus the power output of the wind turbine
grows by 1% per additional meter.
Tower sections
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
Our clients have to invest in a great number of
combinations in order to transport these different
tower sections. Our challenge has been to find a
way of providing a vehicle that is best suited to
their needs with a great load capacity at the most
economic price possible. Faymonville has therefore
developed a model specially conceived for this
purpose, the 2+4 Mega. In fact this is a version of
the Megamax range as Arnold Luxen, head of
sales for Faymonville explains : « The vehicle has
three main features : a gooseneck with a 2 axle
free swing dolly, a 4 axle bogie with pneumatic
suspension and an extra lowbed. This lowbed is
ideally suited for the transportation of tower
sections manufactured in half or third of sections
or rings and weighing up to 50 tons. The load’s
centre of gravity is located outside the longitudinal
axis; the weight is concentrated on one side and
rests on the ends of the platform. The tower sections
are subsequently assembled at the site. »
The Megamax 2+4 is
particularly suited for
the transportation of
wind tower sections.
The range
Faymonville is specialised in semi-trailers with payloads
from 20 to more than 2,000 tonnes.
VARIOMAX AND GIGAMAX LIGHT
Star at the IAA
The IAA Trade Show in Hannover will once again welcome the Faymonville team which will not be short
of surprises. In store this time, among its many innovations, is a light version of the Variomax and
Gigamax. A solution that enables lighter road convoys, but also shorter and more manoeuvrable ones.
The Faymonville stand at the IAA trade show will once again host
a whole range of novelties. Notably a lightened model of the
Variomax and Gigamax model. This model has been subjected to
a complete revision. The research and development have been
carried over to the smallest detail. But why go to such pains to lighten
it? Arnold Luxen, the head of sales, reveals the reasons : « From
TWIN AXLE 2 ND GENERATION
Faymonville will also take advantage of the IAA show to present its
2nd generation Twin Axle. This is an evolution of the independent
hydraulic suspension, a technique first introduced by Faymonville in
the special haulage industry almost fifteen years ago at the 1998
Bauma show.
The new Twin Axle II suspension has a number of winning features:
12 ton load capacity per axle, a loading height of 780 mm in
lowered position, a maximum steering angle of 57°, low
maintenance and mileage costs, an easy wheel change system and
added profitability.
now on we will be offering these models with extra-light pendelaxles,
that means 17.5” tyres and pendel-axles . Up to now, the pendel-axles
were offered with certain technical buffers in terms of
load capacity. These technical buffers where required in certain
cases and in certain countries (16.5 tons/ axle in Great-Britain for
example), but not always. This weighed down the system and was
not justified for certain markets. Depending on the regulations that
apply in the different countries, the lightweight model is the ideal solution.
» Faymonville thus adapts not just to the needs of the client but
also to the specific requirements of the various markets.
Not as long
But it’s not just the weight that matters. Arnold Luxen : « This lightweight
model means that an axle can be spared, for example a
Variomax 2 + 4 instead of a 2 + 5. One can equally rely on a
6x4 truck instead of an 8x4 version. The route convoys are consequently
not as long and therefore easier to manoeuvre. Plus, the special
haulage permits are easier to obtain. »
As a reminder, the light pendel-axles – a kind of axle which has successfully
passed its tests* – enables the vehicle to have a better
steering angle and the suspension clearance is higher than for
beam axles.
Finally, a few technical details on the model on show at the IAA
trade show: it is a 2 + 4 axle Gigamax with 17.5” pendel-axles
and tyres at the front and back. The length of the Gigamax with
the truck fits within the 22 metre limitation. The load capacity
per axle is 12 tons and the king pin load is 25 tons max. An
ideal solution for the transportation of machines between 65 and
75 tons.
This 2 + 4 Giga will be on show with an adapter platform which links
front and rear axles in order to obtain a straight flatbed. This model
therefore enables two different transportation modes: as lowbed
or as straight flatbed.
* Let’s recall that the Megamax equipped with light pendel-axles won
an Innovation Award at the same IAA Trade Show in 2008.

for Hareket
The Turkish special haulage company Hareket
Heavy Lifting & Project Transportation Co., a loyal
Faymonville client, has recently won an ESTA Award.
Partly thanks to Faymonville’s Split S-Modules.
Since 2004, The ESTA (European Association of abnormal road
transport and mobile cranes) assigns every year its Awards of
Excellence to transportation companies for a special, particularly
complicated and innovative mission that has been successfully
accomplished. This year the Award has been assigned to the
Turkish company Hareket for the category « transportation of
loads over 120 tons total weight ». And this for a mission which
took place in Turkmenistan.
This mission was achieved using a modular combination which
included Split S-Modules supplied by Faymonville in a record
time and modules of another brand.
One more demonstration, if it were needed, of the perfect
compatibility and interoperability of the Faymonville modules
with modules of other brands.
The Hareket company wins an ESTA Award partly
thanks to Faymonville.
PENDEL-AXLES
A totally integrated modular concept
Faymonville has spent a lot of time in the development of pendel-axles for many years now. Today, the manufacturer is once again innovating by
using a single axle design and a number of shared components for all its range of pendel-axles. One can even speak of a completely integrated
modular concept, following a totally mastered development process.
Faymonville uses for all its pendel-axles a single
axle concept and many shared components.
Guy Fickers, technical Director, explains the concept : « The idea is
to cover the entire range of our heavy haulage semi-trailers with pendelaxle
solutions based on an integrated modular concept. What’s
new is that the entire range can rely on what one might call an
optimized “construction platform”, resembling the Lego concept
which is based on modular and standardized elements. »
Three aspects
To achieve such an optimized ‘construction platform’ three main
elements must be taken into consideration: the design, the production/
computer-integrated manufacturing and everything that concerns
quality and ease of maintenance and servicing. Guy Fickers
once more: « These are the three essential components of a completely
mastered development process. At the design stage, the
technical elements that satisfy certain functions or constraints (such
as the weights, the bulk, the kinetic properties, the maximum loads,
the vehicle’s expected lifespan, etc.) are determined.
The production and computer-integrated manufacturing processes
are the second pillar. Having a range of optimized pendel-axles is
an essential condition to be able to set up a ‘factory within a factory’
specifically designed for the production of these axles. By comput-
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Conception based primarily on standardization
Data collection in the lab through sensors and analysis
Simulation with analysis of the finished elements
Optimal modular structural design
‘In house’ or ‘in field’ testing
er-
integrated manufacturing I am here referring to the techniques and
methods to implement the production process. These include
equipment such as welding robots and milling factories as well as
specific units given over to the assembly of these pendel-axles. The
aim is to achieve an optimal production process, which must
necessarily be highly flexible with a well-defined target time and a
reduced assembly line flow time.
The third pillar of our optimized ‘construction platform’ is clearly the
quality and the ease of maintenance and servicing. To optimize
maintenance and the equipment’s life cycle, the entire range of
axles is standardized using superior quality components (bearings,
pins, axles, etc.). In terms of surface treatment quality, you should
know for example that the metallization is foreseen as a standard
feature on all pendelaxle bogies. Faymonville is the only brand to
offer it because it can rely on a completely integrated in-house
technology. As for servicing there is no need to repeat here the
high level of competence and ability displayed by Faymonville in
matters of after-sales service. Based on this, within the next 6 months,
the concept will be established for the entire range of products
requiring pendel-axles »
The development itself
From a technical point of view, the creation of an integrated
modular concept requires a complete closed loop development
The finite element calculation
enables to analize the
mechanical structure of the
pendel-axles.
process, as Guy Fickers illustrates : « The process begins with the
design and the calculation which, in this particular instance, revolves
around one essential element: standardization. Standardization
provides a great competitive asset not only in terms of production,
but also as a criterion for the design itself.
Once the concept is established we begin a highly advanced
simulation phase which entails the analysis of the finished elements
(FEM), primarily focusing on all aspects involving mechanical
welding and all critical components. This analysis stage is essential
in order to come up with the optimal design. In order to be successful
we work closely with universities, engineering departments
and the Research and Development departments of key suppliers.
The simulations are carried out based on true load cases: the data
is recorded on test axles (equipped with sensors), driving on a test
circuit.
Then, one moves on to the structured prototype stage before proceeding
to full-scales ‘in-house’ or ‘in the field’ tests , which include
internal tests or tests performed in collaboration with specialized companies.
These prototypes are tested in real or even extreme conditions
in order to obtain validation. The development loop at this
point has gone full circle.»
Faymonville is currently implementing this integrated modular platform.
Soon, the technical production of the pendel-axles will rely
totally on this concept and will enable to equip all semi-trailers justifying
such an axle configuration, going from the light pendel-axles
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
Soon, all of Faymonville’s pendel-axles will be based on a
modular concept.
(12 tons which may for example be used on a Vario Light and the
Mega models) to the more imposing ones (with axle lines bearing
up to 45 tons such as the Modulmax G-SL).
The first products of this are available since this summer. They will
have been subjected to the highest possible level of testing in order
to guarantee unfailing reliability. With this integrated concept of
a standardized platform, Faymonville will be in even better position
– and that’s what really matters in the end - to offer the most suitable
solution to its clients.
The new assembly hall for the modules (see also GTTM 18)
is now operational at Büllingen.
This additional hall enables a further increase in
Faymonville’s production capacity. The reason is simple : the
demand for Faymonville modules has greatly increased
lately. The interchangeability of the G and S modules with
modules of other brands – a feature that is greatly appre-
An increased production
capacity for modular trailers
ciated by our increasing number of clients – certainly has
much to do with it.
The Büllingen hall covers a surface area of 2,500 sq. m.
with two 20 ton overhead cranes capable of lifting all
elementsof the Faymonville product range which includes
modules with between 2 and 6 axle lines and all their
accessories.
Prefamax is looking to conquer Russia
It has been a talking point for some time, but now it’s for real: the first Prefamax
trailers have been sold in Russia. Possibly the start of a big success story.
As a reminder, the Prefamax have been designed specifically
for the transportation of prefabricated walls. Russia,
where many infrastructures are currently undergoing renovation
involve the most modern industrial complexes, is
a pioneer in matters of prefabricated elements. The new
Russian factories of prefabricated elements, adapted to the
new production, storage and transportation technologies
have enabled the introduction of our Prefamax on the
Russian market. And this time it’s for good. Two new factories
– one in Moscow and the other on the shores of the
Black Sea – will be using the first Prefamax trailers delivered
to this country. One of these factories will be using
them directly, while the other will be subcontracting them.
The Prefamax has some good Russian years ahead of it.
