Schouwenbank renamed
The good old lady Schouwenbank has
been sold last Friday 6 th March to Sean
Harrington and will sail under the flag of
St.Vincent & the Grenadines. The new
owner renamed the tug in Enbank. A very
simple manoeuvring operation. Just to
remove her Schouw (mantel piece) and see
a new star is born. It is not known when she
will departed from Terneuzen and sail to her
new homeport Bantry Bay – Ireland. The
Schouwenbank (Imo 7222968) was built in
1972 for the N.V. Nieuwe Rotterdamse
Sleepdienst – Rotterdam under yard number
704. During all those years the Schouwenbank has never changed name and always operated under
the umbrella of the SMIT concern. (Photo: Ricardo van Liere)
Two saved after tugboat sinks
Crew survives on raft for two hours, finds refuge at Hardwicke Island, north of Campbell River. As
winds raged, waves knocked around a tugboat struggling under the weight of two barges, finally
pulling it under, leaving two shivering tugboat operators floating in a life-raft for more than two hours
before they finally drifted onto an island north of Campbell River. "They were cold, but otherwise OK,"
said Mike Stacey, a coast guard maritime search-and-rescue co-ordinator who was not part of the
crew that rescued them. The 42-foot tugboat, Island Provider I, was supposed to arrive at Kelsey Bay
near Sayward in the Johnstone Straits early yesterday morning. At 8:16 a.m., the coast guard in
Comox alerted the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination
Centre that the tugboat, owned by
Campbell River- based West Coast Tug and
Barge, was missing. Shortly after, a searchand-rescue
contingent of about 18 people
set off to find the missing crew. It included a
team from the rescue centre, a coast guard
cutter crew out of Campbell River, a
Canadian Forces Buffalo fixed-wing aircraft
and Cormorant helicopter and an assist
tugboat contracted by the company. The two
tugboat operators last talked to the coast
guard in Comox at 2:20 a.m., saying bad
weather had hit and they were going to
remain in the Sunderland Channel -- about five kilometres from Kelsey Bay -- until morning. Rescuers
would later discover the tugboat never left the channel. A strong, northwesterly wind overnight was
likely blowing at more than 55 kilometres an hour, said Stacey, with the Victoria rescue centre. The
weight of the barges and the treacherous weather proved too much for the tugboat, which sank
around 3:30 a.m., he said. The rescue centre couldn't confirm one report that breaking seas over the
bow blew out the tug's windows, flooding the vessel and short-circuiting the bridge's wiring, so it wasn't
able to issue a mayday call. They do know it was sudden and that the two men weren't able to put out
a radio call to the coast guard saying they were in trouble. They only had time to hop into a life-raft and
drift to safety amid near- freezing conditions. It was the assist tugboat that finally spotted two men in a
life-raft on the shore of Hardwicke Island, about six miles from Kelsey Bay. The two barges, one
carrying building materials and the other equipment, were found stranded in the Sunderland Channel,
anchored by the sunken tug. One man aboard the barge was rescued by the coast guard cutter and
taken to Kelsey Bay. It's not unusual for a tugboat to pull two large barges, Stacey said, but it can be
difficult during extreme weather. "The good part of this is that there were no fatalities," he said. The
Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. (Source: Times ColonistMarch by Katie
Multraship in Terneuzen (acht
slepers, ruim vijftig bemanningsleden) zet waar mogelijk de tering naar de nering. (Source: PZC)
Dedication day for Falmouth’s new tug
A&P Falmouth honoured the patron Saint of Cornwall last week by naming and dedicating their newest
tug St Piran. The new St Piran was acquired by A&P Falmouth last summer, replacing the old St
Piran, which left the port in September 2007 to fulfill a new role of floating tuna cages in Malta after 23
years of service in Falmouth. Formerly named the Hallgarth, (photo below) Falmouth’s latest tug was
built on the Clyde in 1979 and brings the port’s
full complement of tugs up to three, operating
24 hours a day with a crew of three to
manoeuvre vessels within Falmouth’s waters.
It is anticipated that the new St Piran will make
around 20 movements a month. The new St
Piran has a top speed of 10 knots and is the
Falmouth Dock’s fastest and most powerful
tug, with 20.5 tons bollard pull. The 28m vessel
is also incredibly manoeuvrable thanks to twin
multi-directional propulsion units instead of a
conventional rudder. The tug was named at a
ceremony on Queen’s Wharf by Ann Trudgen,
The Mayor of Falmouth’s Consort, before being blessed by Rev. Mark Mesley, Chaplain of Falmouth’s
Mission to Seafarers. Peter Child, A&P Falmouth’s managing director said, ‘We’re very pleased with
the performance of the new tug and to once again have a St Piran operating within the port is a
symbol of the pride we take in our Cornish identity. Our tugs play a vital role in our operations, moving
in the region of 720 large vessels a year in and out of Falmouth, so I’m delighted that we are back up
to full capacity. ‘St Piran’s sister tug, Morgawr, has recently been acquired by the Port of Fowey and
is appropriately named after the mythical Cornish sea giant spotted between Falmouth and Fowey. Its
another great local connection that the sister ships with their new Cornish names will work together
when four tugs are needed in Falmouth and was wonderful to see the Cornish sisters work together
recently when RFA Argus entered port ahead of her overhaul.” Dressed for the occasion in a Cornish
tartan kilt, Mayor Mike Varney said, ‘In the two years since I have had the honour of being Falmouth’s
Mayor, Ann has accompanied me on over 500 civic occasions but today I was delighted to join Ann as
service in Falmouth.’ (Source: Maritime Journal)
Ezra Holdings cancels newbuilds at Karmsund
Ezra Holdings Limited has announced that is has been informed by the Norwegian shipyard Karmsund
Maritime Service (KMS) that KMS will not be able to complete and deliver two vessels it is building for
Ezra Holdings' subsidiary Lewek Shipping in accordance with the contracts for the vessels. As a
result, Lewek Shipping is cancelling the contracts. Under the terms of the contracts, Lewek is entitled
to a refund of the advance payments made to KMS, totalling NKr 186 million. Lewek is now in the
midst of demanding the repayment of NKr 186 million from the bank who provided refund guarantees
in respect of the contracts and will release further information at the appropriate or relevant juncture in
the future. KMS was building to VS 490 anchor handlers for Lewek, with yard numbers 33 and 34.
Solstad cancels newbuilds after KMS files for bankruptcy
Solstad Offshore has confirmed that it has cancelled
two newbuilding contracts at Karmsund Maritime
Service (KMS), after the yard announced its
bankruptcy earlier today. Solstad said KMS
had informed it that it would be submitting a petition for
bankruptcy. Solstad Rederi AS, a 100 per cent owned
subsidiary of Solstad Offhsore, has two newbuilding
contracts with KMS. KMS has incurred significant cost
overruns and considerable delays under the two
projects, and informed involved banks and Solstad that they are not in a position to stand by their
contractual obligations. Said Solstad: "In an attempt to find a model for finalizing the vessels,
negotiations between the involved parties have taken place, however without successfully reaching an
agreement regarding the distribution of the said cost overrun." "The present breach of contract and the
announcement for petition for bankruptcy means that the shipbuilding contracts are no longer
considered as binding agreements. Solstad will, on this basis, claim all deposits under the refund
guarantees." Days earlier, Ezra Holdings Limited also announced that it had been informed by
the KMS that KMS will not be able to complete and deliver two vessels it is building for Ezra Holdings'
subsidiary Lewek Shipping in accordance with the contracts for the vessels. As a result, Lewek
Shipping also cancelled the contracts. (Source: OSO)
Wärtsilä Receives Order for FSV Design
Wärtsilä, ship power system integrator for the
marine industry, has received a ship design
order from the Norwegian shipping company
Sartor Shipping AS. The order is for two Vik-
Sandvik 465 FSV design vessels that will be
built at the Wison Heavy Industry shipyard in
China. Wärtsilä scope of supply also includes
two main engines, gear boxes and propellers.
Sartor Shipping has options for further
newbuildings at the yard. The vessels are due
for delivery in 2010 and 2011. The design
incorporates a hybrid system that offers
considerable fuel savings compared to a
purely diesel mechanical solution. This is because the available power can be adjusted to meet the
various demands of the different operations that this type of vessel will be used for. The savings will be
particularly notable when operating at lower power loads. Multi-functionality is an extremely important
feature of this design as the vessels are intended for use in a multitude of different tasks. These are
likely to include offshore standby service, emergency towing, oil spill recovery, ROV (Remotely
Operated Vehicle) operations, fire fighting, tanker assistance and surface surveillance. The vessels
will have redundant Dynamical Position system, DP II. The speed of the vessels will be approximately
15 kn. The vessels' length is 216 ft and the beam 59 ft. They will comply with the Bureau Veritas (BV)
'Clean Ship' notation for pollution prevention. Wärtsilä acquired the global ship design group Vik-
Sandvik in July 2008. (Source: MarineLink)
Noordhoek announces new-build vessel names
As the keel laying for both of Noordhoek's new build vessel took place last December 2008, the
naming of those new build was inevitable. Several entries were submitted during a call for suggestions
in which Noordhoek employees were asked to propose vessels names that reflect the identity of the
company. An internal advisory committee then made the final selection. The two vessels will be
named: Noordhoek Constructor and Noordhoek Pathfinder. These were chosen to signify the clear
focus Noordhoek has on its market. Noordhoek Constructor reflects the fact that the vessel will
operate mainly within the offshore construction
industry. Noordhoek Pathfinder reflects the
exploration aspect of marine survey work, since
many of Noordhoek's survey operations will
involve exploration of previously uncharted
areas. The Noordhoek Constructor is a
Dynamically Positioned Diving (Saturation)
Support Vessel currently under construction at
the Niigata Yard in Japan for delivery Q4 2009.
The Noordhoek Pathfinder is a Dynamically
Positioned ROV Survey Support Vessel currently
under construction at the De Hoop Shipyard in
Foxhol - The Netherlands for delivery begin Q1 2010. "These are excellent choices to mark our strong
commitment to the subsea market." commented Leen Noordhoek, Managing Director. "The names
Noordhoek Constructor and Noordhoek Pathfinder reflect the company's focus and our
determination to further develop our presence as a leading subsea player." Noordhoek Offshore B.V.
is a leading provider of subsea construction, diving, ROV and survey services to the offshore oil and
gas industry, serving operators and contractors internationally and domestically in the North Sea.
Construction services include installation, upgrading and decommissioning of pipelines and production
infrastructure. Diving, ROV and survey services include inspection, repair and maintenance services
and support services for subsea infrastructure and underwater structures. (Source: Noordhoek)
