Grade Nine Summer reading is a voluntary program for ALL students. Hylton students enrolled in English 9 classes may do one of the following for extra credit: (1) read any two books from the list below and provide documentation as explained in paragraph three of the Introduction, (2) complete the Summer Quest Program, or (3) complete the Teen Summer Reading Program (the latter two offered by the Prince William County Library System). Documentation (as explained in the Introduction) verifying completion of any of the summer reading options is due the second day of class. Pre-AP 9 students are strongly encouraged to read to read The Book Thief, noted with an asterisk (*) in the list below. It is recommended that students begin reading immediately. The novel may be challenging, but rewarding, and will serve to introduce students to Hylton’s philosophy of the importance of independent reading. Documentation (as explained in the Introduction) verifying completion of any of the summer reading options is due the second day of class. The Moves Make the Man / Bruce Brooks An African-American boy and an emotionally troubled white boy in North Carolina form a precarious friendship. Going Solo / Roald Dahl As a young man working in East Africa for the Shell Company, Roald Dahl recounts his adventures living in the jungle and later flying a fighter plane in World War II. Danger Zone / David Klass When he joins a predominantly African American "Teen Dream Team" that will be representing the United States in an international basketball tournament in Rome, Jimmy Doyle makes some unexpected discoveries about prejudice, racism, and politics. The Pigman / Paul Zindel Two high school sophomores from unhappy homes form a close friendship with a lonely old man with a terrible secret. My Life with Martin Luther King / Coretta Scott King An inside look at the life and work of the noted civil rights leader, from the viewpoint of his wife Coretta Scott King. A Gathering of Old Men / Ernest Gaines When Beau Boutan, a Cajun farmer, is found shot on a Louisiana plantation, the claimants to the killing form a wall of protection around the real murderer. Dragonwings / Laurence Yep In the early twentieth century a young Chinese boy joins his father in San Francisco and helps him realize his dream of making a flying machine. Growing Up / Russell Baker The memoirs of the Pulitzer prizewinning columnist of the New York Times which is the story of growing up in America between the World Wars, through the years of depression, and of overcoming adversity with courage and love.Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now / Maya Angelou
