2008 Summer Reading Program – Grade 9
for C.D. Hylton Senior High School
Phone (703) 580-4000
INTRODUCTION
Summer reading is voluntary’ however, all students in Prince William County Public
Schools are encouraged to participate in a summer reading program. The Summer
Quest Program and the Teen Summer Reading Program offered through the Prince
William County Library System are two options open to students who wish to earn
bonus points for summer reading. The third opportunity for students is to choose
novels from the summer reading lists provided by the Language Arts Department at
C. D. Hylton Senior High School.
Prince William County’s regulation 637-1 states that students in English classes who
complete two books and the documentation for those books will receive two
percentage points added to the first quarter English grade. For example, a student
who earns 82% for the first quarter would receive an 84%, pushing the grade to a B.
This opportunity is also available to students enrolling in Pre-AP or AP classes for
school year 2007-2008.
The documentation requires that students “provide the author, title, publishing
information, and an explanation of the general topic or plot of the book along with a
parent or guardian statement that the student has completed the reading.” The
publishing information should be provided following this format example:
Fixx, James F. The Complete Book of Running. New York: Random House, 1977.
Students enrolled in Pre-AP 9, Pre-AP 10, Advanced Placement Language and
Composition (11 th ), or Advanced Placement Literature (12 th ) are STRONGLY
ENCOURAGED to choose the titles selected for those courses and to complete the
support work when provided. These assignments and lists of required and optional
novels are enclosed within this packet. It is the opinion of the instructors of AP and
PreAP courses that reading during the summer supports the very important practice
of comprehension, analysis, and application that are the foundation for the approach
to literature in the advanced-level classes. However, summer reading and
assignments are no longer required.
Please see the Hylton High School webpage for further clarification from the AP
Coordinator, Mrs. Meg Holt.
Grade Nine
summer reading options is due the second day of class.
