A Time to Celebrate
The lights, the Christmas carols, and the handsomely wrapped gifts are all part of the
sights and sounds of Christmas. But is that what Christmas is really all about?
To some, Christmas is the shepherds, the magi with their camels, and the angels singing
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14). But we
must not allow the sights and sounds of the season to take away from the true meaning of
Christmas!
The birth of Jesus Christ is the real reason for the season. But the Babe in the manger is
just the beginning of the story. I want you to picture the Savior as He walks the dusty roads
of Judea. Sail with Him as He crosses the storm-tossed Sea of Galilee. Go with Him to Capernaum
and see Him perform miracles there.
See Him on the outskirts of Jericho where blind Bartimaeus shivers in darkness, clutching
his dirty beggar’s rags. The blind man cries out, “ ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ ”
(Mark 10:47 NKJV) and his sightless eyes are opened!
Walk with the Lord into the garden of Gethsemane and hear Him say, “. . . If it be possible,
let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou
wilt” (Matt. 26:39). See Jesus drink the cup of sin, sickness, and degradation
as He is nailed to the cross. Hear Him say with His last
breath, “. . . It is finished . . .” (John 19:30).
No more will the Holy of Holies be found in a building made
of mortar and stone. Now it will be found in the heart of every
human being who says, “I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and
Savior.”
This month as we celebrate Jesus’ birth, let us remember that
He lived and died for one purpose—to redeem men and women,
boys and girls, from the devil’s tyranny. As we commemorate
our Savior’s birth, let us also celebrate His life, death, and
resurrection . . . and honor the Lord for giving His life so
that mankind could be set free!
“‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel’—which means, ‘God with us.’”
—Matthew 1:23 (NIV)
// KENNETH W. HAGIN
4 rhema.org
Our Lord and Savior was born
in a stable in Bethlehem. The Christ child
lying in a manger was a picture of God
and man united once again. God was separated
from His creation at the Fall of man
in the Garden of Eden. The baby lying in
the manger was Immanuel, which means
“God with us”! And at Jesus’ birth, God
became like one of us.
After Adam and Eve fell, a great
chasm—as wide as the distance between
sin and righteousness—separated God
and man. Mankind was lost, with no way
to cross this chasm to obtain the righteousness
of God. And because He is holy,
God could not cross the chasm to join
Himself with mankind.
There had to be a mediator—a gobetween.
So, over 2,000 years ago, God
had His Son born in Bethlehem. Jesus
came to the earth and joined himself to
humanity. And through His birth, life,
death, burial, and resurrection, He made
it possible for humanity to be joined to
God. The real reason for the season, and
the only reason for the season, is the salvation
of God’s creation, mankind!
In the Garden of Eden, God and Adam
walked side-by-side. But Adam messed
up and could no longer commune with his
Creator. However, at the right time Jesus
Christ, Immanuel, came to this earth so
that once again God’s creation could walk
and talk with Him.
Now we can again share God’s nature.
His Spirit can dwell in us, and we can
have fellowship with God.
God and man living together. This is
the quest of every religion—to be united
with their God. Christianity is the only
religion that can say, “God dwells with us.”
Many people become sentimental
when they think about the Christ child
lying in a manger. Yes, He came as a
baby, but He was also the Savior of the
world Who came to save sinners
(1 Tim. 1:15).
On that dark night many centuries
ago, the angels rejoiced and sang, “Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will toward men” (Luke 2:14). God
had made a way of escape for every
person who would ever live. What we
could not do for ourselves, God did for us
through Jesus, our Immanuel.

God’s Geese
Author Unknown
A man by the name of Bob
didn’t believe much in God
and was quick to let anyone
know. His wife, however,
was a believer and raised
their children to have faith
in God.
One snowy Christmas Eve,
Bob’s wife and children
Immanuel or Emmanuel?
pleaded with him to go
with them to church . He
refused. “Christmas is
nonsense!” he said. “Why
would God lower Himself to
come to earth as a man?”
So his wife and children
left, and Bob stayed home.
A while later, as the wind
howled outside, Bob relaxed
in front of the fireplace.
Suddenly he heard loud
honking noises. He looked
out the window, but a blinding
snowstorm hindered his
view, so he went outside to
see what was going on.
In the field by the barn, Bob
found several wild geese
that had gotten separated
from their flock. They had
lost their bearings in the
snow and were wandering
around aimlessly.
Bob knew the geese
wouldn’t last long in the
The difference in spelling depends on whether the word was translated from Hebrew or
Greek. In the King James Version, the word appears in Matthew 1:23 as “Emmanuel.”
But in the verses Matthew quoted from in Isaiah (7:14; 8:8), the English translation is
spelled “Immanuel.” According to Strong’s Greek Dictionary, the Greek word is translated
as “Emmanuel,” and the Hebrew word is translated as “Immanuel.” But whether it’s
“Immanuel” or “Emmanuel,” it’s talking about Jesus.
storm. They needed a shelter
where they could stay
until the wind and snow
stopped. He opened the
barn doors and waited for
the geese to go in, but they
stayed in the field.
Bob got behind the geese
and tried to shoo them into
the barn, but this only scared
them. He then got grain and
laid a trail on the ground to
the barn door. But the geese
still would not go in.
All of Bob’s efforts to help
had failed. He realized the
geese would never follow a
man and thought, If only I
were a goose, I could save
them. Then he had an idea.
He went into the barn,
picked up one of his geese,
and carried it outside behind
the wild geese. When
he released his goose, it
flew through the flock and
straight into the
barn. One by one
the wild geese
followed it to
safety.
He stood silently
for a moment,
considering
what he had just
thought: If only
I were a goose, I
could save them.
Then he remembered what
he had said earlier to his
wife: “Why would God lower
Himself to come to earth as
a man?”
Suddenly, it all made sense.
Mankind was like those
geese: blind, lost, and perishing.
God sent His Son to
become like us so He could
save us. Now Bob understood
what Christmas was
all about and why Jesus
Christ had come.
Bob fell to his knees in
the snow and prayed,
Suddenly, it all made
sense. Mankind was
like those geese: blind,
lost, and perishing.
God sent His Son to
become like us so He
could save us.
“Thank You, God, for coming
in human form to get
me out of a storm of sin!”
This Christmas season,
never forget that the Son
of God became like one of
us and dwelt among us. He
came to lead us out of sin
and into salvation.
LYNETTE HAGIN
We have more conveniences and
luxuries today than ever before. And with
all these conveniences, you would think
that we would have more time and peace
in our lives. But just the opposite is true.
Instead of having more time, we have
less. And instead of being more peaceful,
many people today don’t have any peace.
Of course, we cannot experience true
peace without knowing the Prince of
Peace. And to know the Prince of Peace,
we must accept Jesus as our Lord and
Savior. For it is only through Jesus that
we can be at peace with God (Rom. 5:1).
Many people have accepted Christ as
their Savior, but they haven’t accepted
Him as their Peace Giver. Jesus is not
only our Savior—He is also our Peace
and our Problem Solver.
What is peace? Merriam-Webster’s
Collegiate Dictionary gives one definition
of peace as “freedom from disquieting or
oppressive thoughts or emotions.” The
Hebrew word shalom is often translated
“peace” and carries the idea of wholeness—physically,
mentally, emotionally,
and spiritually.
One of the main reasons most of us
don’t have peace is that we are trying to
work things out by ourselves. But instead
of trying to be our own problem solver, we
are instructed in the Bible to commit our
ways to the Lord and trust Him to help
us in every situation (Ps. 37:5).
Another reason some of us lack peace
is that we don’t commit all of our ways
to the Lord. We commit to Him only some
of our ways. But God is concerned about
everything that concerns us. And if we’ll
only ask, He’ll give us whatever we need
in any circumstance.
To live in peace, we must guard our
minds and control our thoughts. The
mind can be a powerful ally or a terrible
rhema.org 7

enemy. Many people today look to
antidepressants to control their
thoughts. But that’s not where the
answer is. The answer is found in the
Word of God.
Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep
him in perfect peace, whose mind is
stayed on thee: because he trusteth
in thee.” When the Apostle Peter instructed
us to cast all our cares on
the Lord (1 Peter 5:7), he meant all of
them, not just some of them.
Satan specializes in worry, fear,
anxiety, confusion, and doubt. And he
will bombard our minds with those
things if we allow him to. The Devil is
not a gentleman. If we leave the door
open just a crack, he’ll kick it wide
open.
Our minds are the only entrance
Satan has into our lives. That’s why
it’s so important that we not let him
dominate our thoughts. If we allow
ourselves to think negatively and
worry, we will be defeated. We cannot
think defeat and expect victory. We
cannot think sickness and expect
health. We cannot think poverty and
expect wealth.
Satan constantly tries to fill our
minds with negative thoughts. He
tries to confuse us and keep us from
the peace we can experience in God.
However, we don’t have to give in to
fear or worry if we keep our minds on
the Lord.
PHILIPPIANS 4:8
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever
things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things are
just, whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever
things are of good report; if
there be any virtue, and if there be
any praise, think on these things.
It’s up to us to make our minds
think on things that will build us up,
not tear us down. When Satan tries
to bombard our minds with fear and
doubt, we must force ourselves to remember
the things that God has done
for us. We must focus on the positive.
If we’re thinking about the good
things of God, we won’t have time to
worry, complain, or get discouraged.
Meditating on God’s promises will fill
us with a good report.
God’s report says we’re healed
(1 Peter 2:24). His report says we’re
more than conquerors (Rom. 8:37).
His report says we’re rich and not
poor (2 Cor. 8:9) and that we can
do all things through Christ who
strengthens us (Phil. 4:13). His report
says that we have a sound mind
(2 Tim. 1:7) and that we will always
triumph in Christ (2 Cor. 2:14).
We must stop thinking about
what we don’t have and start thinking
about what we do have in Christ.
Quit thinking about what is wrong
and begin thinking about what is
right. To see our problem solved,
we can’t think about how big our
It rained the week before
Lynette Hagin’s Kindle the
in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
On some days, it poured. But
as is so typical before any
event Lynette Hagin plans,
the rain stopped, the clouds
parted, and the sun shone
brightly as 1,800 women
descended on the RHEMA
“Forget about everybody but
you,” Mrs. Hagin told the
women Thursday evening. “I
ignored my cell phone all
day today. If I can do it,
so can you.”
Excitement and
expectancy were soon
transformed into the
sweet aroma of worship
as the women, with
arms uplifted in adoration
of their Heavenly
Father, sang praises to their
God and King. That same
sweet spirit permeated the
auditorium throughout the
conference.
Lynette Hagin opened the
gathering by asking the
women what kind of legacy
they were writing in the history
book of their lives. After
her message, she invited the
congregation to kneel at their
seats and commit to making
Black notebooks with “Leaving
the cover were given to the
women with the charge to
begin recording their own
Guest speakers included
At the Saturday evening candlelight
service, Lynette exhorted
the women to take their places
in the Body of Christ, for there
is much work to be done before
Jesus can return. Without
a doubt, this year’s Kindle the
that felt like three days of
Heaven on earth. Those who attended
renewed, and ready to be a light
marked their calendars for Kindle
“You cannot preach, teach, and deliver people based on someone else’s relationship
with Jesus Christ. You need to preach and teach and help people based on
the relationship you have with Jesus Christ. It’s got to be real. It’s got to be personal.
It’s got to be actually happening in your life. Then you can give it to other
people and make them more valuable for the Kingdom of God.”
—Rhonda Rogers
“There gets to be a time when there aren’t any more words to be spoken to man. And you have to just get
on your knees—on your face—and say, ‘God, it says right here in Your Word. If You
didn’t want it to come to pass, You ought not to have said it. Because here it is. And
I’m going to take You at Your Word.’ That is seeking the Lord.”
—Patsy Cameneti
“You don’t really have what you want in life. You have what you
decide to do. God’s looking for people to stand up and make a
difference. He’s waiting for somebody who will be a leader in this
hour—someone who’s not just waiting for the door to be opened,
but they’re opening the door. They are pressing through. This is
not the time to sit back and just watch what’s happening. You are
what’s happening!”
—Lois Taucher
Testimony
KTF is one of the highlights of our year. Our pastor encourages us to start saving and preparing for it a year in advance. We try to go to RHEMA for a
whole week and take in Prayer and Healing School and the Wednesday night and Sunday morning services. . . . It’s such a rich experience. We go as
a group—it strengthens relationships and helps build a stronger church as a result.
of a person’s success
lies in the lives that are
his or her influence.
What
Legacy Are You Leaving?
What kind of legacy are you leaving
for the next generation? What kind
of “history book” are you writing?
You see, we’re all writing our own
history book—a history of our lives.
And we’re also leaving a legacy that
someone else is going to follow. The
kind of legacy we leave is vitally
make our contribution to the world!
Do you realize all the things that
you’re handing down to your
children and those around you?
Everything you are and possess
today is part of your legacy. How do
you want others to remember you?
Do you want to be remembered as
intelligent, well-educated, welldressed,
or well-organized? The
real measure of a person’s success
lies in the lives that are changed
because of his or her influence.
What are some of the things we
want to pass on to the next generation?
First, we need to leave them
a legacy of a life committed to
God. Judges 2:10 (NKJV) says,
“When all that generation had
been gathered to their fathers, another
generation arose after them
who did not know the Lord . . . .”
If we don’t leave a godly legacy,
the next generation isn’t going to
know the Lord!
Second, we must teach our children
to live a life of honor and to respect
their elders. Third, we must live a
life of character. We must be honest
and do what is right. We must be
forgiving, be people of our word,
and place others first. And fourth,
we must leave a legacy of a life of
faith in God.
What are you recording in your “history
book” today? Are you leaving
a legacy that will lead others down
the right path? If you’re not satisfied
with what you’ve written in the
past, you can start writing a new
legacy today! God has greater things
for you to accomplish. He has a
greater history book for you to write.
May it be said in your history book
that you have made a difference in
someone else’s life!
(Editor’s Note: This article
was adapted from the book
Love: The Way to Victory.)
The Bible encourages us
to let acquiring the love of God be our
great aim and quest in life (1 Cor. 14:1
Amplified). There must be a reason why
God wants walking in the God-kind of
love to be a priority in our lives. Actually,
there are wonderful benefits and good
results that come when we walk in love.
Let’s look at a scripture that talks
about the rewards of walking in love.
Walking in the God-kind of love is walking
in godliness, isn’t it? As you read
the following verse in First Timothy,
substitute “walking in love” for the word
godliness.
1 TIMOTHY 4:8 (NKJV)
8 Bodily exercise profits a little, but
godliness [walking in love] is profitable
for all things, having promise of the
life that now is and of that which
is to come.
Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit,
wrote this to Timothy. This wasn’t just
Paul speaking. This was not man’s idea.
The Holy Spirit said this to Christians
everywhere through the Apostle Paul.
God was telling us that godliness causes
us to profit.
We would do no injustice to this scripture
to read it this way: “Walking in love
is profitable for all things.” Why does the
Bible say that bodily exercise profits only
a little? Because it has the promise of
paying off only in this life.
But the Bible says that godliness is
profitable for all things. When is godliness
profitable? Is it profitable only when
we get to Heaven? No, it’s profitable in
this life and in the next life.
Therefore, godliness or walking in
love is profitable throughout our lives
on this earth. But if we live for God now
and walk in the God-kind of love, it will
also be profitable to us when we get to
Heaven.
Living for God means keeping God’s
Word. If we’re going to live for God,

we’ve got to keep His commandments. Well,
under the New Covenant, the only commandment
we are to keep is the law of love!
Walking in the God-kind of love is profitable.
Walking in love pays off not only in this
life, but also in the life to come.
I’ve preached and practiced Mark 11:23 and
24 for more than fifty years. And I’ve acted on
the spiritual truths Jesus quoted in these verses
with amazing results. But right along with
Mark 11:23 and 24, I’ve also practiced verse 25
about forgiveness. All of my Christian life, I’ve
refused to harbor the least bit of animosity, ill
will, or wrong feelings toward anyone.
If the least bit of ill will or animosity toward
anyone tries to creep into my heart, I get
after it. I won’t entertain it for a moment. I
wouldn’t entertain that kind of wrong thinking
any more than I would entertain the thought
of stealing from someone. Wrong feelings toward
others will do me damage.
I would be just as careful about allowing unforgiveness
and animosity in my heart toward
another person as I would be about drinking
poison or handling a rattlesnake. Unforgiveness
and wrong feelings toward others are more
deadly than any poison or rattlesnake bite!
I believe that’s one reason why I’ve been
able to walk in what I call divine health for
many years. I’m not bragging on me. I’m bragging
on Jesus and what the Word will do!
I’ll tell you one thing about walking in
God’s best: if you want to walk in health,
you’re going to have to walk in love and keep
your tongue!
Peter told us how to practice what the Word
says about walking in love.
1 PETER 3:8–9
8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion
one of another, love as brethren, be
pitiful, be courteous:
9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for
railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing
that ye are thereunto called, that ye should
inherit a blessing.
The Amplified Bible says in verse 8, “. . . sympathizing
[with one another], loving [each other]
as brethren [of one household], compassionate
and courteous (tenderhearted and humble).”
This is the God-kind of love in action.
God’s love never fails! Therefore, if you are
walking in His divine love, you can’t fail. If you
are walking in the God-kind of love, His love
working in and through you will be more than
enough for any situation.
The God-kind of love will put you over in
life because God is love. And walking in love is
profitable—not just in this life, but also in the
life to come! Enjoy the benefits and great rewards
of walking in the love of God.
Confession
I will walk in God’s love. I will not criticize others, because God’s love works no
ill to its neighbor.
When I am walking in God’s love, I can claim God’s best blessings in life. I will
be tenderhearted and forgiving; therefore, I shall reap a blessing.
I will keep my tongue from speaking evil, and I will turn from evil and pursue
peace with every man.
Thank You, Father, that as I endeavor to grow in the fruit of love, You will help
me be all that I can be in You.
Pacific Rim Trip
Shortly after the close of a Sunday morning RHEMA Bible Church service in April, Kenneth and Lynette
Hagin and a crew of five began a 21,668-mile trip to the lush tropics of Southeast Asia. Hopscotching
across the equator, they traveled to Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia.
Imagine a city so crowded with people and traffic that it takes two hours to drive seven miles. That’s
what it’s like to drive in Jakarta, Indonesia, where RHEMA Indonesia is located. Most people would
become irritated at the snail’s pace on the streets. Not Kenneth and Lynette Hagin. They look out the
windows of their car and see souls—hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children who have
never heard the Good News of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.
Then imagine an ultra-modern, highly cosmopolitan country that is very rich by the world’s standards but
very poor spiritually. This is Singapore. In 2001, RHEMA Singapore was established to train Christians
to bring spiritual freedom to this nation. Finally, imagine Thailand—a place where it’s common to see elephants
and luxury cars sharing the same street, but also a country where Buddhism is deeply entrenched.
Thank God, RHEMA USA graduates established RHEMA Thailand there in 2000.
Now imagine how proud Kenneth and Lynette Hagin were to hand out diplomas to the 2009 graduates
of these schools. Armed with the authority they have as believers and the knowledge of who they are in
Christ, these graduates are well prepared to take the Gospel message to their predominantly Muslim and
Buddhist cultures.
Going Down Under
[ BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA ]
It’s a little over 3,000 miles from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Brisbane,
Australia. And then it’s another 2,000 miles to fly to Apia, Samoa,
from Brisbane. That’s like traveling in the U.S. from the Atlantic
Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and then back to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Why
would Kenneth and Lynette Hagin fly all that distance to spend
only a day at the RHEMA international training centers located in
these countries? They understand the importance of multiplying
themselves. They can’t go to the uttermost parts of the earth by
themselves and teach those who live there. But they can train
others who can. That’s why they pour everything they have into
RBTC students, whether those students are sitting in classrooms
in RHEMA USA or in RHEMA South Pacific and the newly reopened
RHEMA Australia.
Built on the ruins of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán, Mexico City is one of the world’s largest urban
What better place to establish RHEMA Mexico! In May, Kenneth and Lynette proudly participated
in RHEMA Mexico’s 10th graduation ceremony. Kenneth delivered the commencement address to
graduates eager to take the message of faith to their country and neighboring nations.
Four degrees north of the equator in the mountain city of Bogotá, Colombia, Kenneth and Lynette
Hagin dedicated the new four-story building that houses RHEMA Bible Church Colombia and
RHEMA Colombia. This nation has long struggled with internal conflict, but the graduates of
RHEMA Colombia have learned how to look beyond circumstances and enforce the Word of God in
their lives and in their country. They are determined to make a mark for God and demonstrate His
power to the citizens of Colombia.
RHEMA Bible Church
Youth Missions Trip
Kenneth W. Hagin has a passion to see the lost saved. That’s what drives him.
And you can’t be around him for long before you develop a passion for souls
too. That’s why 45 teenagers from RHEMA Bible Church’s AXIS ® youth group
went to Campina Grande, Brazil. Many people travel to Brazil for its natural
beauty and carnival, but not these kids. They wanted to make a mark in the lives
of young Brazilians. And what a mark they made: 587 salvations, numerous
healings, and many Brazilians filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues!
You don’t find Kenneth and
Lynette Hagin home very
much. In between teaching
students at RHEMA Bible
Training Center in Broken
Arrow, Oklahoma, and ministering
to their congregation
at RHEMA Bible Church,
almost every month they
conduct a Living Faith
Crusade somewhere in
North America. And during
the months they are home,
they host Winter Bible
Seminar, Campmeeting,
the Ministers, Leadership
& Helps Conference,
the Kindle the Flame®
Women’s Conference,
and Kenneth W. Hagin’s
men’s conference, A Call
prospective students twice a
year during RHEMA College
Weekends.
You might think that they
would slow down. After all,
Kenneth W. Hagin celebrated
his 70th birthday and 50
years in ministry this year.
But not the Hagins. That’s
because they are dedicated
to fulfilling the mandate God
gave Kenneth E. Hagin: “Go
teach My people faith.”
And they won’t rest until the
message of faith has been
carried and taught to people
in crowded cities, remote
villages, and every place in
between.
S a l v a t i o n
To many people, Christmas is about
giving and receiving. There is an excitement
in finding the perfect gifts
for loved ones and seeing the looks
on their faces as they open their gifts.
And there is also a joy in receiving a
gift that you really wanted or were
surprised to receive.
To our Heavenly Father, Christmas is
also about giving and receiving. The
Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so
loved the world that he gave his one
and only Son, that whoever believes
in him shall not perish but have eternal
life” (NIV). God gave us the most
precious gift He could give—Jesus
Christ. And Jesus gave His life for us
so we could spend eternity in Heaven
with Him. All we have to do is receive
Him as our Lord and Savior.
This greatest Gift is available to you
right now. If you haven’t made Jesus
your Lord and Savior, pray the following
prayer:
The Greatest Gift
Ever Given
Dear God,
I come to You in the Name of Jesus.
I admit that I am not right with You,
and I want to be right with You. I ask
You to forgive me of all my sins. The
Bible says if I confess with my mouth
that “Jesus is Lord” and believe in my
heart that God raised Him from the
dead, I will be saved (Rom. 10:9). I believe
with my heart and I confess with
my mouth that Jesus is the Lord and
Savior of my life. Thank You for the
greatest Christmas Gift ever!
In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
If you prayed this prayer for the first
time, we would like to hear from
you. Contact us at 1-866-312-0972.
We would like to give you three FREE
Seed
Thoughts
by Lynette Hagin
“The Lord will guide you always: he will satisfy your needs in a
sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like
a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
— Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)
It seems that I say in every December issue of The
Word of Faith, it’s hard to believe another year has
come and is almost gone. The years go by so quickly
that we can hardly keep track of them. The holiday
season is here and that puts most of us women in a
tizzy. We think of Christmas shopping, parties, and
cooking.
Trying to find the perfect gift for family members
can be frustrating. Often we buy gifts and those gifts
are returned the day after Christmas because something
didn’t fit or it wasn’t what someone wanted.
As I stated in last year’s “Seed Thoughts”, I decided I
could eliminate this type of stress. Now, either I take
my family shopping and they pick out their gifts, or I
give them money. It sure simplifies my life.
Christmas is a time when families get together. This
should be a pleasant time when memories are made.
However, holidays can also be a time when families get
in squabbles and stop speaking to each other for a long
time. Recently in my prayer time, the Lord brought to
my attention that many Christians are holding on to
offenses. Someone says or does something that offends
them. And they develop a grudge and bitterness creeps
into their lives. Then they wonder why things are not
going well in their lives.
This is an area we all need to examine. My fatherin-law
spoke about offense so much that it made an
impression on me. He would quote Mark 11:23–24: “For
verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto
this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast
into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall
believe that those things which he saith shall come
to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I
say unto you, What things soever ye
desire, when ye pray, believe
that ye receive them, and
ye shall have them.”
And I would get excited
as he spoke about believing
God for things. But then
he would say, “If you
don’t practice Mark 11:25,
the previous scriptures
will not work for you.” He
would then quote Mark 11:25: “And
when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye
have ought against any: that your Father also which
is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
I would think, Why couldn’t he have ended with the
previous scriptures? However, he caused me to take
inventory of my life. I’d ask myself, “Am I holding
a grudge against someone? Have I forgiven everyone
who has wronged me?” As I was taking inventory,
I had to remember that forgiveness includes forgetting
what the wrong included. Sometimes forgetting
was harder than forgiving. Clara Barton, founder of
the American Red Cross, was reminded one day of
a vicious deed that someone had done to her years
before. But she acted as though she had never heard
of the incident. “Don’t you remember it?” her friends
asked. “No,” Barton replied, “I distinctly remember
forgetting it.” When it comes to offense, we should
concentrate on forgetting rather than remembering.
I have found that when I allow wounds of hurt
to heal through forgiveness, love is restored in my
heart for that person. Ephesians 4:31–32 in the New
Living Translation says: “Get rid of all bitterness,
rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all
types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God
through Christ has forgiven you.”
This month we celebrate the birth of Christ. God
sent us His very best gift—His only Son. Christ’s
mission was to redeem mankind from sin. God so
loved the world that He was willing to forgive us.
He was willing to show mercy to a sinful, lost, and
dying world. Jesus Christ was willing to become the
Supreme Sacrifice.
Let me ask a thought provoking question. Do you
possess God’s forgiving spirit? Or do you have a judgmental
spirit—one that is unwilling to forgive others?
If you are holding a grudge against someone, I encourage
you to repent and go to that person. Apologize for
allowing a root of bitterness to creep into your life.
You will find that things in your life will turn around
for you when you apply this principle.
