Room service
We’ll bet that a goodly percentage of current Hull
residents weren’t living here in July 2001, when Fred
Kiley opened the Clarion Nantasket Beach Hotel and
Conference Center.
Kiley sticks out like the stripe on a skunk in photographs
of the grand opening. He’s at the end of a
line of suits, sporting a “farmer’s” tan from hours
working outdoors, a hard hat, a T-shirt, shorts, and a
wide smile.
He’s the only person in the photo who seems wholly
at ease and restless at the same time.
You can see that he just wanted to give his guests
a sandwich and a beer and then send them on their
way so he could go back to work.
The Clarion and its adjacent condos sit on a hardwon
acre-and-a-quarter that Kiley unearthed after
bulldozing the long-vacant Vogue nightclub, which
never lived up to its moniker, and the remnants of an
old-time bowling alley whose lanes became bowed
and bruised beyond use by endless gutter balls and a
fair number of lucky strikes.
In short, the block was a blight until Kiley – whose
luxury apartment proposal had been spurned by town
meeting – heeded the advice of then-selectman Leonard
Hersch and built the upscale hotel the town had
craved for decades.
With his sister, Barbara, whose single-mindedness
saw his vision successfully through successive
projects, Fred Kiley was able to accomplish what
many others had only aspired: he changed the very
face of the community.
The Clarion. Olney Street. Sunset Place. Kenberma
Place. None of these existed a decade ago. Together
they generate more than a half-million dollars
in annual property tax revenues for the town, to say
nothing of the hotel’s economic spinoff. The Clarion
is Hull’s biggest private employer and electricity consumer,
purchaser of infinite commodities, and sole
source of celebrity sightings as Music Circus headliners
head there to lay down their heads aprés-show.
On Monday, Barbara Kiley talked about the hotel’s
employees as family. She reminisced about all
the weddings, bar and bas mitvahs, birthday parties,
and the occasional “pop-up [impromptu] funeral”
she’s witnessed over the past nine years. The hotel’s
sale, she said, was “very bittersweet.”
She credited officials like Town Manager Phil
Lemnios and Town Counsel Jim Lampke for helping
to bring the hotel to reality so many years ago, and
gave special praise to veteran planning and appeals
board assistant Hildred Parent for helping to steer a
then very green Kiley through Hull’s permitting and
political labyrinth.
Lemnios told us that his “hat’s off to Fred Kiley, a
class act who invested in the community and who is
really responsible for a lot of the economy here.” The
Kileys’ sense of responsibility even extended to being
sure that the new owners are financially sound
and “willing, able, and even eager to participate in
and even improve” Hull, he said.
On Monday, Barbara Kiley said she couldn’t even
begin to contemplate what her life would be like today
– Thursday – the first day that “any problems at
the hotel are not my concern.” She said she and her
brother will continue to make Hull their home, and
they will both continue to develop new projects for
the Heritage Companies, the family development,
construction, and management company that’s based
in Quincy.
We wish them well.
It seems entirely fitting that in the same week we’re
a place with which they’ve long been associated, we
have a departure of our own to report.
Next week’s edition – Sept. 30 – will be my last as
On Oct. 1, I will report to work at Jack Conway &
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
‘SOME SEMBLANCE OF PROGRESS’ SHOULD BE
EVIDENT AT HRA SITE…
To the Editor:
I watched the Hull Redevelopment Authority meeting
on Sept. 13 and was particularly impressed by
what Charles E. Gould had to say. He gave a complete
analysis of what the authority accomplished
under his chairmanship, which lasted from 1965 to
1974. Mr. Gould listed the achievements carried out
during his chairmanship of the urban renewal program.
In your article in last week’s Hull Times, you didn’t
recognize Mr. Gould’s position as chairman, which
gave him first-hand knowledge of what the Hull Redevelopment
Authority accomplished almost four
decades ago. He mentioned the planning, the staffing,
and the execution of the program under the funding
of the federal government, and the acquisition of
76 buildings and 85 parcels of land.
By this time, the town should have seen some semblance
of progress.
Twenty-four families were relocated, which translates
into 100 or more people; 17 individuals and 21
businesses also were relocated. Mr. Gould went on to
say that the first building was demolished in December
of 1973, almost four decades ago, and the land
still sits there undeveloped.
I feel that The Hull Times didn’t make clear the
role that Mr. Gould performed in his tenure as chairman.
I believe it is the paper’s duty to represent knowledgeable
reporting in regard to the development,
which should have begun decades ago.
The public needs to understand how much time
has already passed, and we’re now talking about no
development for three to five years. I believe we have
committed a disservice to the town and its people.
How much longer do we have to wait to see progress
being made with the HRA site?
Mr. Gould is now 78 years old and wonders if he’ll
ever get to see the HRA land serve the purpose that
was intended, or will the land sit there as a parking
the public service of her brother, Charlie, and his unflagging
LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATES URGED TO SUPPORT
CHANGES IN STATE HEALTH CARE LAWS…
To the Editor:
During this election season, the Massachusetts
Municipal Association is calling on all candidates for
the Legislature to pledge their support for reform legislation
to give cities and towns the ability to control
skyrocketing health insurance costs and save local
taxpayers $100 million a year, and we encourage all
voters and taxpayers to do the same.
Paying for health insurance is a problem for everyone,
but cities and towns have been forced to pay
much more than necessary because of a state law that
gives municipal unions a veto over routine plan changes
that would reduce the cost to taxpayers.
During the past 10 years, cities and towns have
seen their health insurance costs rise by more than
150 percent, squeezing out vital services and costing
local taxpayers more and more.
The state has cut local aid by $825 million, and
cities and towns have laid off thousands of employees,
cut services and increased their reliance on property
taxes. Without real health insurance reform, communities
will continue to pay too much for employee
THE ASSAULT ON BATTERIES
If you do a lot of stop-and-go urban driving,
you should know that it could affect your
automobile’s battery performance and service
life. The reason for this is that low engine
RPMs (rotations per minute, a unit
used to measure the rotational speed of the
engine) at stop lights (2-3 minutes) makes
the battery work harder to supply the electrical
needs of the vehicle, especially with
numerous electrical accessories turned on.
Short drives and stop-and-go driving require
the battery to supply the electrical needs
that the alternator is struggling to provide.
As a result of this reduced charge time (and
additional heat), stop-and-go drivers should,
for the most part, expect shorter battery life
and more frequent replacement intervals.
A dead battery isn’t usually a big deal, but
it can leave you stranded far from home, in
THE WEEK
Library recertification bill on governor’s desk.
The signature of Gov. Deval Patrick is the next step
in restoring state certification for the Hull Public Library,
which was decertified by the Massachusetts
Board of Library Commissioners earlier this year.
State Rep. Garrett Bradley and Sen. Robert Hedlund
announced this week that legislation that would
re-certify the Hull Public Library was approved by
the Legislature and was sent to the governor’s desk.
The town’s library lost its certification because not
enough money was budgeted for its operations in fiscal
2010, based on a state formula. The MBLC denied
the town’s request for a waiver, and many area
libraries suspended borrowing privileges for Hull residents.
Most agreed to serve Hull patrons on July 1 in
anticipation of the recertification of the local library.
Certification qualifies the library for additional
state funding, and demonstrates a commitment to
maintain a level of service to the community. Hedlund
and Bradley applauded town meeting voters, library
Director Daniel Johnson, and the board of trustees
for their efforts to keep the library open and accessible.
They also thanked the Friends of the Hull
Public Library and the Hull Public Library Foundation
for their volunteer efforts to raise money.
The library still needs to submit reports and applications
to the library commissioners.
“Maintaining a strong and vibrant public library
is an essential component for the cultural and educational
well-being of the community,” Bradley said. “I
am pleased that, through the joint efforts of the community
and local officials, the Hull Public Library will
be eligible to receive state assistance and funding.”
“John Adams said that liberty cannot be preserved
without general knowledge among the people, which
is why he was an ardent supporter of a public library
system,” Hedlund said. “Particularly during these
tough times, when many people have cut out a monthly
trip to the local bookstore, it is all the more important
that we keep our local libraries open and available
to the public.”
Number, please? Although its certification prospects
brightened this week, a dark cloud remains over
the Hull Public Library’s telephone service.
“The library phones are still not working,” library
Director Daniel Johnson said this week. “We are working
on it and will keep patrons updated. We thank
them for their patience.”
Callers to the library’s main number have been getting
constant busy signals for the past two weeks, and
outgoing calls can’t be made from the phone system.
Johnson said that patrons who need to reach the
library are encouraged to stop by, email hucirc@
ocln.org or send a fax to 781 925-0867.
Also, the library continues to hold preschool story
hours on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. through Nov.
3. No registration is necessary.
Fighting the flu. The Hull Board of Health will
hold a flu clinic on Oct. 19 from 4-7 p.m.
This year’s influenza formulation includes the
H1N1 vaccine, Health Agent Joyce Sullivan said. Vaccines
are available for residents seven and older. Participants
are asked to bring non-perishable food items
and personal-care products for the local food pantry.
Pneumoccocal vaccine will also be available to
high-risk residents, asthmatics, and smokers. The vaccine
is free, but the town bills Medicare for those residents
65 and older. Homebound residents can call
the Hull Board of Health at 781 925-2224 to schedule
a home visit.
On Wednesday, Nov. 10, a flu clinic will be held
at the Hanover Mall involving six local communities,
including Hull. The time will be announced soon.
Republicans to meet next week. The Hull Republican
Town Committee will meet on Wednesday,
Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Café Ona, 443 Nantasket
Ave. It is an exciting time to be a Republican in Massachusetts,
Chairman James Mellon said this week,
and the Hull RTC is always looking for new members
and fresh ideas. Whether you want to become a
member, or would like to stop by and listen to report
on Republican events, meet candidates [including Tim
Historic calendar to raise $$ for library
By John J. Galluzzo
It happens every time I show my face in town.
“You’re John Galluzzo? Oh, I read the 100 Years
Ago column every week! That Miss Vining…” Nearly
eight decades after her death, Floretta Vining is
again a star in the town she loved so
much, through no effort on my part –
I, thanks to The Hull Times, have just
let her voice be heard. With her pretentiousness,
haughty attitude, and anger-driven,
personal editorial attacks on
her fellow townspeople, she’s the unlikeliest
local hero in Massachusetts.
But Floretta was a hero. She did more
for this town than the other 449 people
who lived in Hull in 1890 combined. She
fought for roads, for trains, for mail. She
fought for sidewalks, cried out for infrastructure
upgrades for the safety of
all Hullonians, and generally strove to
make Hull a better place to live.
Among her many goals was the designation
of a public library for the town of Hull. When
the idea floated through the letters section of The
Hull Beacon in 1898, she backed the notion. A Professor
Thomas Markoe and family had lived in the
old John Boyle O’Reilly estate after the poet’s death,
but it was obvious it was not a long-term occupancy.
The Hull Village Club moved in for a while, but eventually,
in 1913, the library idea solidified, and the
building that had always been known as the O’Reilly
Estate was reborn as the Hull Public Library.
Today, as we know, the abstract idea of the Hull
Public Library needs our help. To meet the community’s
needs, it needs to move. The O’Reilly estate
has given us nearly a century of service, but it’s time
to find, or build, a new library building, one that can
promise our citizenry a comfortable place to learn,
to gather, and to pass on knowledge to our youth for
decades to come.
For that reason, I’ve pulled Floretta Vining out
of retirement.
For those folks who do read the 100 Years Ago
“It’s
wonderful
here,”
column, following the antics of our ancient townsfolk
from week to week, well, there’s more where
that came from. I’ve created a 12-month calendar
that will complement what you will read in that column
throughout 2011. Two or three days per week,
purchasers of the calendar will have the ability to
look a few typewritten lines deeper
into the mind of Floretta Vining, into
the shady actions of Boss John Smith
and the Old Ring and into the past of
our community. Historic photos, courtesy
of the Hull Historical Society, will
help bring those days back to life.
That calendar will be on sale at the
Endless Summer event, thereafter at
the Hull Public Library, and at the Hull
Holiday Showcase in November. Every
cent of profit will go to the future
of the Hull Public Library. Toward that
end, we’ll be printing 500 copies
which we will sell at $20 apiece, the
simple math being that if they all sell
out this fall, $10,000 will have been
raised; if anybody would like to help underwrite the
printing cost of $1,800, the funds can go even further.
I’ve said for years that the Hull Public Library is
my secret weapon. Whenever I have an idea for an
article or a book about Hull history, I knock on Dan
Johnson’s staff’s door. We’ve retrieved books and
microfilm reels from libraries as far away as Missouri,
the Library of Congress, and more. They’ve
produced historic maps I never knew existed, steered
me to reference materials I might have never consulted.
They’ve made my efforts much easier.
Then, the same could be said for Floretta Vining.
She’s given me plenty to write [and laugh] about
over the years, and the show’s not over. I can’t give
back to Floretta for what she’s given me, but through
the sale of the 1911-2011 100 Years Ago Calendar,
we can all give back to the Hull Public Library, so
Floretta can still be a member of our community
when The Hull Times begins its “150 Years Ago”
column just a few decades from now. ∞
Rep. candidate
Finnerty asks, ‘Are
you undertaxed?’
Tim Finnerty, the Republican state Representative
candidate, recently issued the following statement
from his campaign:
Beacon Hill believes that you are under taxed. To
correct the problem, they have raised your taxes eight
times in four years. Unfortunately, our state legislature
has forgotten that every tax increase causes the
loss of thousands of jobs. The 25-percent increase in
the sales tax cost us an estimated 15,000 jobs. These
policies have created a stagnant economy with high
taxes and high unemployment.
Now is the time for new policies that create jobs
and stimulate the economy. We can start by rolling
back the sales tax to 5 percent. This will allow you to
keep more of your income and recapture thousands
of lost jobs. Massachusetts has a 6.25-percent sales
tax and a 9-percent unemployment rate. New Hampshire
has 0-percent sales tax and 5.8-percent unemployment.
Isn’t it better to collect income tax from
new jobs than to take higher sales taxes from our unemployed
neighbors and friends?
Ten years ago the people of Massachusetts voted
to reduce the sales tax to 5 percent. The state Legislature
ignored the vote. Instead of cutting taxes and
spending, the Legislature increased debt and nearly
doubled spending! High unemployment, high taxes
and enormous debt are not the hallmarks of a winning
formula for long term economic prosperity. This
year we have a choice. We can continue to vote for
legislators who have repeatedly voted for higher taxes
that push jobs out of state, or we can vote for new
leaders who will respect the voice of the People and
create new jobs. I vote for jobs. ∞
A MERRY TIME – The Friends of the Paragon Carousel held a ‘thank you’
Editorial
Continued from page 2
Like the Times, Conway is a family-owned, family-run
organization, and it’s a place with which I’m
quite familiar: I worked in its public relations department
for eight years before returning to the editor’s
chair here in 2006. I say “returning” because, before
that, I was editor of the Times from 1992-96, and have
worked here in some capacity since I was 16 years
old, starting out covering what was then known as
the beach advisory committee.
I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve achieved
here over the years. Working as a team, we reinstituted
our tradition of spoofing Hull’s newsmakers on
April Fool’s Day [and always manage to snare at least
a few gullible souls], we developed a website that attracts
literally thousands of visitors from across the
world, and we earned seven awards for excellence
from the New England Newspaper and Press Association.
I’m grateful to all of our readers for giving me the
chance to inform, entertain, and challenge you every
week. I’m also grateful to my Times “family” for their
kindnesses and support.
While I will no longer be involved in the day-today
operation of the paper, I plan to remain active as
a contributor. With 23 years of institutional memory
rattling around in my head, I’ll be able to heed the
advice of Times publisher Susan Ovans, who frequently
counsels reporters not to waste material.
It’s been said that a writer with a pen, paper, and
imagination is never unemployed. And if we’ve proven
one thing over the years, it’s that in Hull, there’s
never a shortage of good material to fill the pages of
your hometown newspaper.
health benefits, which will force even more service
cuts and layoffs, while local taxpayers pay millions
more than they should.
When the new Legislature convenes in January,
our Representatives and Senators need to support real
reform that gives local government the same authority
the state has to design health insurance plans outside
of collective bargaining. Cities and towns would
be able to their lower health insurance costs by $100
million statewide. This is real savings that taxpayers
deserve and need.
The reform legislation would provide relief from
an indefensible state law that allows local unions to
block even modest changes in health plans, such as
increasing any co-pays or deductibles. Many municipalities
are locked into plans that offer $5 co-pays
for office visits, and no co-pays or deductibles for
many expensive procedures. But state employees have
$20 co-pays and much higher deductibles because
state leaders have exempted themselves from this
collective bargaining mandate, and state officials routinely
implement plan changes to save money on
health insurance with no union approval required.
Cities and towns should have the same authority
the state has. There is no excuse for keeping the unique
and special veto power that municipal unions hold
over health plan changes – this veto power is costing
taxpayers millions, and is forcing cuts in important
services, and is causing the elimination of teachers,
firefighters, and police officers from local budgets.
We urge all voters and taxpayers to ask candidates
for the Legislature for a commitment to pass strong
municipal health insurance reform when the Legislature
convenes in January. Otherwise, the fiscal problems
we face will get worse, and local taxpayers will
continue to pay more and get less in return.
ATHLETES THANK COMMUNITY FOR TOLL BOOTH
BOOST…
To the Editor:
The Hull Boosters would like to thank all of the
students, parents, and coaches who volunteered on
Sunday morning for the annual sticker drive and toll
booth. We’d also like to thank the community for its
unending support.
It’s the smiling faces that greet you at the door,
waiting for their sticker, and the motorists with their
arms out the window with their donation that make
this event so successful every year.
If we missed your house, or you weren’t home that
morning, we will have the stickers available at Endless
Summer, as well as all Boosters Club events. The
suggested donation is $5.
PARENTS NEED TALKING POINTS FROM SCHOOL
DEPARTMENT…
To the Editor:
“It’s beautiful, but how are the schools?” moms
from other towns ask me at tot playgrounds.
“The grade school has a good reputation,” I answer,
and sometimes add, “the test results have been
pretty good,” but I don’t know much more than that.
In my observation, a lot of families send their kids
to parochial, private, or charter schools. Happily, some
of the brightest, most respectful kids I know go to
Hull High.
What I could really use are some talking points
from the school committee, so I can be a cheerleader
for Hull schools by saying, “The grade school is excellent
at ..., the middle school has great..., and the
high school has a strong ... and ...”
Respectfully,
The Clarion’s impending sale had
been rumored for weeks, although it was
not confirmed until Barbara Kiley announced
it at last week’s Hull Redevelopment
Authority meeting. She had put
off several requests for comment by the
Times until this week, saying that she
was “superstitious” and feared “bad karma”
if she speculated about the sale before
the deed was done.
Over coffee Monday morning at Raffael’s
– the hotel’s restaurant owned by industry
veteran Elio Ricci – Kiley said that
the Clarion “was never on the market,” and
that the new owners had approached Heritage
because they wanted to expand their
operations to include a waterfront hotel that
had proximity to Boston.
Although she wouldn’t comment on
the purchase price, Kiley said negotiations
for the transaction were “straightforward”
and that the principals were
“open and sincere.
“I think they’re a lot like us,” Kiley
said. “I think they’ll be good for the
town. They want to take the hotel to the
next level.”
The new owners are keeping the hotel’s
current employees, she said, which
was important to her and her brother.
“Many of my people have been here
since we started,” Kiley said. “I’m not
kidding when I say they’re like family.
“It’s really bittersweet to sell, but it’s
time.”
The restaurant and gym, Ocean Fitness,
will continue to be privately owned
and operated, Kiley said. The Sand Dollar
Spa is part of the hotel, which generated
financing [TIF] and/or district improvement financing
[DIF], and develop a municipal fiscal impact
model to evaluate “bottom line” impacts.
“This is an important planning effort that the town
needs to do,” Fultz said.
Fultz proposed that the focus for the committee include
the area from Rockland House Road to Phipps
Street, which would include the Hull Redevelopment
Authority property. Fultz said he supported the wideranging
approach because developers looking at the
DCR site would want to know how the town is addressing
traffic and parking issues in the area, as well as
how that site fits into the overall plan for the district.
Selectman John Reilly’s motion to form the committee
limited its scope to the DCR property, however
he said the board could later expand its purview.
Reilly asked about forming an “industrial commission”
with its own decision-making authority, and
gave Hingham Shipyard as an example of a project
done with its own development corporation. He also
asked that Fultz meet with the HRA and the DCR to
discuss the project. He suggested that Fultz incorporate
representatives of surrounding towns to obtain
different perspectives. Fultz said he would like to
contact the group that runs the islands in Boston Harbor
to participate as well.
Town Manager Philip Lemnios said he plans to
ask the HRA to contribute funds from its treasury toward
the planning effort.
Selectman John Brannan expressed concern that
the project’s focus would too big, and said he believes
that everyone involved “will be going in circles.” Fultz
assured Brannan that that would not be the case. “We
need to create a framework,” he explained. “The developer
needs this information.”
Fultz said that the goal for the property is to create
revenue streams for the town and for the developer.
He recommended the formation of the local planning
committee to develop an “inclusive” project plan before
seeking proposals from builders.
Selectman Dennis Blackall asked whether the town
could jump-start the process by asking developers to
bring ideas to the table first, before the committee
develops its framework. He said that holding “a giant
brainstorming session” might result in “something we
would inadvertently eliminate by developing this
framework.”
“I certainly think we have the time to do this right,”
Fultz said, adding that he believes that the development
of a framework could take a year to complete.
He said Blackall’s concept was “an interesting way
to inform this committee about the process,” but said
that in his experience, the community establishes the
process prior to involving developers.
”People can get tied up in proposals, but don’t have
the deliberative process,” he said.
“I think you’re all on the same page,” Chairman
Domenico Sestito said, adding that state Rep. Garrett
Bradley, who sponsored the legislation, is scheduled
to meet with the board next week. Board members
plan to discuss the DCR property with Bradley during
that session.
Also on Tuesday, Lemnios announced that the real
estate subcommittee of the financial planning committee
has compiled a list of properties that can be
sold by the town to generate revenue.
The subcommittee evaluated all town-owned land
and is recommending that the selectmen develop a
process for disposing of at least one property, a large
parcel of land on Mountford Rd. that can be subdivided
into three house lots. Because the town acquired
the land due to nonpayment of taxes, the selectmen
have jurisdiction over its disposal – either through
soliciting bids or through an auction.
Other lots on Spring St. and Nantasket Ave. in Hull
Village were acquired many years ago to build the
former Village School. Lemnios said that because the
town purchased the land through a town meeting vote,
a similar vote is required in order to sell the property.
Sestito said he would first like to do site visits to
each property to assess their condition and talk with
neighbors. He also said that he would like to hold a
meeting to get the public’s opinion about the potential
sales. Reilly said that if the land is buildable, he
would prefer to go to town meeting to allow the town
to decide what to do with it.
Reilly asked about the cost of appraising and surveying
the land to get it ready for sale. Lemnios said
that the cost to appraise the land would be approximately
$2,000 and to survey the land would cost between
$2,000 and $3,000.
Brannan said he wants to “move forward and stop
talking about it.” Lemnios said that there is a process
to follow. Brannan asked about the timeframe. “Let’s
send out a notice to abutters. Let’s not drag this out
for six months,” he said. Reilly reiterated his desire
to bring the matter to town meeting.
The board agreed to put the potential land sales on
the agenda of a future meeting.
The selectmen also announced the resignation of
library trustee Kelly Beazley, and will solicit applicants
to replace her on the board. ∞
Tyrell contract extension
Continued from page 1
Longevity bonuses that were part of the previous
agreement were retained, however. Tyrell is entitled to
$3,000 per year for years four, five, and six of service;
this is Tyrell’s fourth year as superintendent in Hull.
The longevity pay was included because “the Committee
wishes to recognize the value of service provided
by the Superintendent over time,” according to
the contract.
The salary adjustment was part of the school committee’s
annual review of Tyrell’s performance, Peters
said. The committee gave the superintendent high
marks during a public session on her evaluation in May.
In their review, committee members credited Tyrell
with building a stronger working relationship with
the teachers union, with frequent communication and
outreach efforts, with reorganizing the central office,
and with successfully managing the school budget.
Peters said the committee’s evaluation followed a
template compiled by the Massachusetts Association
of School Committees, and rated the superintendent’s
relationship with the school committee, community
relations skills, staff relationships, educational leadership
and curriculum coordination, business and facilities
management, personal qualities, and system
planning and improvement
“She’s doing a good job, and we made sure that
the public part of this process – her performance review
– was done out in the open, so everyone knows
how we came to this decision,” Peters said. “The contract
language was confusing, so we wanted to be very
clear on that as well.” ∞
HULL
100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
Compiled from The Hull Beacon
by John J. Galluzzo
SEPTEMBER 23, 1910
• The big increase in the population of
this town since the United States Census
of 1900 is a matter of surprise and
delight to the residents. The census of
1900 gave the permanent population of
the town as 1,703; one just taken 3,360,
an increase of 1,657 in a decade.
• For nearly three hours Monday afternoon,
freight steamer H.F. Dimock lay
helpless off the entrance to the lower
harbor as a result of trouble with her
boilers. Capt. Crowell sent the international
code signal “F.G. N.,” which
means, “send a boat to assist us.”
• The signal was seen by the marine observer
at Hull. The word was transmitted
to the Marine Department of the Chamber
of Commerce. At eight o’clock the
tug Mercury took the Dimock in tow and
later was assisted by the tug Orin. The
Dimock arrived at seven last evening.
• The Stony Beach life-saving crew at
Hull, headed by Capt. Sparrow, went to
her assistance, but the Dimock signaled
that the only trouble was with her machinery.
• The Dimock has only been in commission
a few weeks and she was rebuilt
after being nearly destroyed in the fire
at the Metropolitan docks in New York,
early in the summer.
• Mr. Mahoney is putting up a twelvefoot
fence at Surfside and others nearby
are to do the same at once.
• Jack Springer, who was seriously injured
a month ago when an automobile
collided with his motorcycle and
knocked him out, has nearly recovered
from his injuries.
• The “line gale” sent many cottagers
starting to town who will probably be
back again when the beautiful breezy
days of late September and October are
in evidence.
• Where are the gulls? Those beautiful
creatures of the silver wings which clean
and glitter in their flights through the
year. Perhaps the weather is not rigid
very few of them are yet to be seen.
Cool weather is coming, but that is no
reason for us to quit gardening. You can
have a beautiful fall garden very simply if
you know what to plant. Nurseries offer
more in the way of cool-weather flowers
and ornamental vegetables and grasses.
Transform your garden from summer
to fall finery in style by planting annuals
that will add interest and color. Pansies
and lobelia are perfect, as are New
England asters, chrysanthemums, asters,
and jewel-toned ornamental kale, cabbages,
and Swiss chard.
In the perennial border, many plants
still will flower, including Carpathian
harebell, gaillardia, coreopsis, dahlias,
and Carolina phlox. If the plants were
cut back after the first flowering season,
they will reappear this month for a second,
but less spectacular, show.
But for sure, now is the time to look
forward to a colorful spring by planting
bulbs like daffodils, iris, tulips, hyacinth,
Grecian windflowers, lilies and just
about any other bulb that can be found
at your local nursery or hardware store.
It is safe to plant any new arrival you
see at your nursery whether it is a bulb,
shrub, vegetable, or flowering plant.
Make sure you do the planting while the
soil is soft enough.
While enjoying your still-blossoming
garden, dig and store tender bulbs
like dahlias, cannas, gladioli, and tuberous
begonias, which could be damaged
by winter cold. ∞
