In Seattle’s Natural Area Parks management
unit 29% of the trees are greater than 12
inches in diameter, while 53% have a diameter
of 6 inches or less. Of these small diameter
trees, 68% are species that are large at
maturity (taller than 50 feet). So while they
are small today, they have the potential to
increase in size over time.
Meanwhile, within the Single-family Residential
management unit, 18% of the urban
forest trees are over 12 inches in diameter
and 55% are less than 6 inches diameter. On
average, 46% of the tree species that will be
large at maturation currently have a trunk
diameter less than 12 inches.
