DEAR
MUSIC LOVERS
We cordially invite you to discover the OSM concert program for the new 2015-2016 season.
First, however, I wonder if I might ask a question. As a member of a community of music
lovers, have you ever asked yourself why you like going to concerts? Why is it that you could
not live happily without these encounters with classical music? What prompts you, year in
and year out, to attend and enjoy our OSM concert seasons?
True, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal is part of our
city’s history and culture – the living traditions and values
that matter to us all. The Orchestra is, if I may put it this way,
the sound of our city, a sound that was known to our parents,
grandparents and many others before our time. It’s embodied
in the works performed and transmitted by the OSM from
generation to generation, in concerts whose sound forms a
living link to our heritage.
Music has a remarkable property: it begins and it ends.
But while its sound is present, we seem to witness time in
all its fullness, past, present and future. For listeners, this
perception is a precious experience.
But certainly there are other reasons why you love classical
music. We hope that one of the main reasons is the fact that so
many Montrealers and visitors to our city enjoy our concerts.
To experience music together, to be moved, touched and
delighted, to share this with our musical community – all
this adds a special quality to our experience. The music we
play speaks to every listener, engages them subjectively
and resonates with their inner world. Yet at the same time,
everyone is listening to the same work. Each listener experiences
the concert as an individual and simultaneously as
part of a musical community.
This particular form of experience and perception is in
itself a major demand on us, as musicians – a challenge to
our dedication and imagination in our work as artists.
One of the peculiarities of classical music is that it’s
expressed in the form of large-scale works deployed in time.
A symphony or a concerto for soloist and orchestra doesn’t
present a single musical mood but includes a variety of
scenes. It conveys enthralling narratives or even represents
entire dramas. This style of music will always be played and
appreciated by audiences. New qualities, as yet unknown
and unperceived, remain to be discovered in these vast compositions,
always in a new and different way. Great music is
an experience of repetition, renewal and rediscovery by its
listeners – which indeed is its very purpose.
Our programming is primarily based on such works from the
symphonic literature, though we are aware that these works
may be perceived very differently, depending on other works
that share the same program. Yet the repertoire in itself is
not enough. Because, as an audience, you’re demanding and
curious, just as we musicians are. Together, we hope to open
the door to new experiences.
As music lovers, you’ll be hearing works in 2015-2016
that are great in scale and stature alike: Bruckner’s Fourth
Symphony, Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, Also sprach
Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, Mahler’s First Symphony,
The Planets by Holst, Ives’s Fourth Symphony, Bach’s
Christmas Oratorio – plus works by Stravinsky, Prokofiev
and Shostakovich… and much more.
Our opening concert presents an outstanding work of French
impressionism: Pelléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy. Later
in the season, for comparison, you’ll discover the symphonic
poem Pelleas und Melisande by Arnold Schoenberg, the
“conservative revolutionary” musician who felt a strong
kinship with the music of Debussy. For our last concert and
in commemoration of the wars of the 20 th century and the
victims of conflict around the world today, we will dedicate a
performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, with soloists
Catherine Naglestad, Ian Bostridge and Thomas Hampson.
Our new concert hall – already nearly four years old!
– continues to inspire our programs. The Grand Orgue
Pierre-Béique will be heard in a series of concerts with film,
trumpets and dance, as well as in recital by the renowned
organist Jean Guillou. One more original cycle, Music and
Images, will present the worlds of Philip Glass, Jean Cocteau
and Charlie Chaplin. Another high point of the season is
the Tchaikovsky Festival, featuring three programs led by
the Russian-Italian conductor Oleg Caetani. You’ll also find
superb concerts performed by the OSM Chorus , plus some
eagerly anticipated recitals by major soloists.
We’ll be welcoming a number of outstanding guest conductors,
including David Zinman, Vasily Petrenko, Jukka-Pekka Saraste,
Iván Fischer, Long Yu, Nicolaj Znaider and Alain Altinoglu.
Among guest piano soloists, we’ll have the pleasure of hearing
Maria João Pires, András Schiff, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Yefim
Bronfman and Rafal Blechacz, and the first OSM appearance
by a rising young star, Daniil Trifonov – and last but
by no means least, Canadian masters Marc-André Hamelin
and Louis Lortie. Leading violinists and cellists, including
Hilary Hahn, Gil Shaham, Vilde Frang, Leila Josefowicz
and Nicolaj Znaider, Alina Ibragimova, Gautier Capuçon
and Jan Vogler will also be there. These amazing talents,
together with the OSM, are sure to provide an outstanding
musical experience.
We cordially invite you to come and share some truly
unforgettable experiences this concert season, when many
musical marvels – perhaps even miracles – await us all.
(concert version)
The year 2015 coincides with two significant events of the 20 th
century : the 70 th anniversary of the end of the Second World
War, and the centenary of the Armenian genocide. To
underscore that tragic moment in the history of Armenia, the
renowned composer Krzysztof Penderecki will be conducting
a work written especially for the occasion. For this concert,
rising as it does from the depths of darkness in the soundscape
of Veljo Tormis to scores by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn
and Bernstein, the music turns towards the light, bearing with
it hope and peace.
