Our Fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> Creed and <strong>the</strong> ten Commandments <strong>to</strong><br />

ge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r prayers, which <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> recite<br />

vocally. To encourage <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r exercises<br />

She also left <strong>the</strong>m a large cross made quickly at her re<br />

quest by <strong>the</strong> hands of <strong>the</strong> angels and set up in her ora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Besides all this, as a kind Mo<strong>the</strong>r, and in order <strong>to</strong> bind<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> Her still more, She distributed <strong>the</strong> things in her<br />

possession, which, though of trifling human value, were<br />

never<strong>the</strong>less rich and inestimable <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m as being<br />

pledges and proofs of her maternal love.<br />

464. Moved <strong>to</strong> great pity because, having engendered<br />

<strong>the</strong>m in Christ, She was now obliged <strong>to</strong> relinquish <strong>the</strong>m<br />

as orphans, She <strong>to</strong>ok leave of <strong>the</strong>m. They all prostrated<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves at her feet with great wailing and abundant<br />

tears ;<br />

for now <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> lose in one moment <strong>the</strong> con<br />

solation, <strong>the</strong> refuge and <strong>the</strong> joy of <strong>the</strong>ir heart. But on<br />

account of <strong>the</strong> continued solicitude of <strong>the</strong> most blessed<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r for her devout congregation<br />

all <strong>the</strong> seventythree<br />

afterwards persevered in <strong>the</strong> fear of God and <strong>the</strong><br />

faith of Christ our Lord. Yet <strong>the</strong> demon raised up<br />

violent persecutions against <strong>the</strong>m and against <strong>the</strong> in<br />

habitants of Ephesus. Foreseeing this <strong>the</strong> prudent Queen<br />

fervently prayed for <strong>the</strong>m before leaving and asked her<br />

divine Son <strong>to</strong> guard and preserve <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>to</strong> appoint<br />

some angels for <strong>the</strong> defense of this small flock. All this <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord granted Her according <strong>to</strong> her wish ;<br />

and She after<br />

wards often consoled <strong>the</strong>m by sending exhortations from<br />

Jerusalem and by charging <strong>the</strong> disciples and Apostles at<br />

Ephesus <strong>to</strong> watch over <strong>the</strong>se virgins and retired women.<br />

The great Lady continued this loving care during her<br />

whole life.<br />

465. When <strong>the</strong> day of departure- arrived, <strong>the</strong> Hum<br />
