THE MOST BLESSED MARY DESTROYS THE TEMPLE OF DIANA<br />

IN EPHESUS; HER ANGELS BRING HER TO THE EMPY<br />

REAN HEAVENS, WHERE THE LORD PREPARES HER FOR<br />

THE BATTLE AND VICTORY OVER THE INFERNAL<br />

DRAGON; THIS CONFLICT BEGINS WITH TEMPTATIONS<br />

TO PRIDE.<br />

431. Most celebrated is <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong> city of<br />

Ephesus, situated on <strong>the</strong> western confines of Asia; for<br />

many renowned events of past ages made that city famous<br />

and illustrious throughout <strong>the</strong> globe. But its greatest<br />

privilege and excellence consists in having entertained<br />

and harbored within its walls <strong>the</strong> supreme Queen of<br />

heaven and earth for <strong>the</strong> space of some months, <strong>the</strong><br />

number of which I will state later on. This privilege<br />

was a most fortunate one for Ephesus; since <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

things which are mentioned for its renown made it truly<br />

unhappy and infamous, because through <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> prince<br />

of darkness had permanently set up his throne in that<br />

city. But as our great Lady and Mo<strong>the</strong>r of grace found<br />

Herself hospitably entertained and thus considered Her<br />

self under obligation <strong>to</strong> its inhabitants, who received Her<br />

liberally and offered her gifts, it naturally followed, that<br />

She, in accordance with her most perfectly ordered and<br />

burning charity deeming Herself brought nearer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

her benefac<strong>to</strong>rs, should repay <strong>the</strong>ir hospitality with great<br />

er blessings. For if She was liberal <strong>to</strong> all, even strangers,<br />

She would certainly be much more free with her gifts<br />

and favors <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants of Ephesus. Her own<br />
